Holly Finds Her Bowl - UPDATE February 18, 2016

Common redpoll male
Common redpoll male
Shortly after noon, Holly found her rubber bowl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =jOJNZuz6onk&feature=youtu.be. At first, she was torn between playing with the bowl and playing with Lucky. Then Lucky won out as is shown in the 2-minute video. The play was gentle. Three quarters through the video, Holly showed us her right hind foot, revealing that she has now removed her main foot pad, part of her heel pad, and four of her toe pads.

Out the window, a common redpoll male here from the arctic, posed so his red crown was obvious.

Floor ElectricityAt the Bear Center, workers cut into the floor to lay electrical floor outlets for the new wooden exhibit platforms. This will eliminate wires coming down from the ceiling. Today they filled the trenches with cement. Notice that all the floor tiles are gone to make room for carpet to deaden echo of the nature sounds that will be playing. Echo could be a problem with all the carpeted exhibit panels being replaced by wooden platforms.

Thank you for all you do.

OK Chippy, I've GOT it about the "other side"  :D  That gives you some nice extra room, sort of like having a guest cottage  ;)  And around here a duplex is one above the other and side-by-side must by like your double block.  Cool.

Average winds today are 19 with gusts of 46.  It was like that last night too.  At least it isn't real cold, we're at 38 and headed for 47.  The snow is settling and melting like crazy!  Apparently the electric company for this area has an outage estimated to last until 1:00.  Poor Joe was on the tread mill at 3 miles an hour and the power went out.  Guess it stopped instantly.  He said it was a good thing he was hanging on or he would have gone down.  I said "like when Sparky is getting walked and he suddenly does the cattle dog thing and turns RIGHT in front of you and stops and you're trying to miss him and not fall?" and he sad "no worse".  :D  Needless to say part of the hospital were on the emergency generator.

Hope you don't get any fires, especially with that wind Cal.  It sounds like there were some bad ones in parts of MO.  The one video a storm chaser got showed the firemen right by the back yards of some people and that fire was getting closer. :(

Hello Jewelies!

I was wandering around some of the new threads in the forum and came across the thread for the RRP new cam installed in the Decorah North Nest (DNN) and found a photo of the pair that have taken up residence there.  I want to share with you the photo that was posted by Tulsaducati which leads me to believe that the female eagle (rear in photo) is looking very much like an off spring of the Decorah Mom and Dad clan.  She has the most beautiful eyes.  The eye shadow of Mom and the eye liner of Dad.  She is BIG and beautiful.   Her mate is much smaller and looking very handsome too.

I know this is for Jewel and her cubs, but wanted you all to see this pair too.

Looks like the wind that was blowing down all the trees in California is now in the midwest and causing havoc for all of you midwesterners.  The best part about it is that it is bringing you all the warm dry air.  Remember a while back when I promised you that it was going to be nice and warm soon.  This is it folks.  Enjoy it while is lasts.

Here is wishing you all the best of Friday and a good slide into the weekend for all!  If you see a cat tomorrow, think of the Eaglette and wish yourself a Happy Caturday!!

Here's Holly.

A bad way to start my Saturday, oversleeping and feeling poorly.  I need to go into an energy-absorption mood.

Happy trails for all.

Waking Up Sweet - UPDATE February 19, 2016

Geneva on Sept. 29, 2015
Geneva on Sept. 29, 2015
In this 4 ? minute video that a Lily Fan captured this morning at 8:50 AM, Lucky and Holly lie on their sides relaxed, nose to nose, giving each other little nibbles in one of the sweetest demonstrations of bear affection I?ve seen. Neither bear got up. They remained facing each other moving mainly their heads. I couldn?t see all that they did. At first, I believe Holly was working on Lucky?s left front foot pad like we saw Jewel do for one of her yearlings in 2013. I believe they did some mutual tongue-licking between 1 ? minute to 2 minutes into the video, and again at 3 minutes. I?ve never seen bears lying on their sides nose to nose doing such gentle things like this. Watching bears undisturbed in dens gives insight into interactions people would not otherwise see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmDR6H-ZTbM

On this rainy, slippery day, traffic was backed up on a highway for nearly an hour as a big wrecker winched a big truck up a hill and back onto the highway. The truck had slid off and rolled over. I was the third vehicle in a long line that was stopped for the rescue vehicles. The officer near my van was from a different part of Minnesota but recognized me and was happy to meet me. It was gratifying to see his support and enthusiasm for my research. His mother is a staunch Lily Fan. He asked about my problems with the DNR. He said he had been following my research and the DNR saga for years. He said he is a lifelong hunter and was fully in support of protection for radio-collared bears. Meeting him gave me a boost of sorts.

I was also happy to hear that a national network is planning to interview me about my work and problems in a few months.

An E-newspaper out of New York interviewed me a couple days ago and was going to send me an email so I could link to the article in the update that evening, but I didn?t get an email. If any Lily Fan has come across the article about North America?s black bear population, it would be interesting to see how it turned out.

The picture of 8-month-old Geneva (Braveheart?s daughter) from the update of September 29, 2015 might be used on the Bear Center?s upper wall as an example of a chest blaze.

Thank you for all you do.

I only hung around that ATM with the big watch dogs for 3:50.  I'll come back there another time.

Good morning Jewelies! I've been in a very bad mood since yesterday afternoon. Last Friday we dropped Robin's car off at the body shop. The guy told us it would be ready to go Friday, yesterday. We called yesterday afternoon to see if it was ready to go. The manager says no there's been a problem. The body shop technician's dad died so he was off all week, one tech was off with the flu and the third tech was fired because he never came to work on time. Oh and by the way, they lost the car key! Why the manager didn't call us and tell us all this crap earlier in the week is a mystery. Robin would have brought the car home and driven it! Instead we were inconvenienced with having only one vehicle! The manager said he would call the Subaru dealership Monday morning and order a new key...free of charge! How nice of him. Robin was livid. She called her insurance agent to tell him about it. Her call wasn't the first. He had 2 other clients call and complain about their cars sitting there all week with no work being done. The manager guarantees us that the car will be finished next Wednesday. We will see. This body shop is supposed to be the biggest and best in this area! Three car dealerships send all their work there. I understand the reasons why the 2 techs were off from work and I don't fault them at all. It's the incompetence of the manager for not letting us know that the car was just sitting there all week. Sorry, I unloaded all this on you guys. I had to vent!

Cal, I'm with you, double ick with Holly chewing Lucky's pad! Lol! And really nice that the cop recognized and talked to Dr Rogers. Bet he told his mom and she was thrilled! Probably asked if he got Dr Rogers autograph for her! Crow did watch BBT and said it was really good! I wonder if she is pregnant in real life?  That wind finally got here yesterday! It was awful! Stuff was flying everywhere!

Jp, hoping you feel better soon and have a nice Saturday!

Eaglette, when my Stella Cat came into the bedroom this morning, I told her Happy Caturday, Stella! And yep, I thought of you! Lol! Beautiful pic of DNN! Post all the pics you like! We love the eagles.

It's almost time for Hyacinth so I'd better get dressed! Bbl.

39, sunny, and feels great out!  Snow/ice spots are sure going down fast.  I think this afternoon I need to take Sparky for a walk.

That must have made Dr. Roger's day with the conversation with the cop.  A good type person to have on his side since he sees lots of people.

The DNN couple is beautiful, looking forward to when they are on-line for everyone.

Hello Everyone! Hope you all are well. Wanted to stop by and tell you all that my Son Tommy is doing much better, didn't have to have the second surgery, so happy about that. He has been back to work for a couple weeks. Thanks so much for all of your good wishes and prayers :)
