Good evening, Jewelies! Hope you all are having a nice New Year's Day. It started out a cold, cloudy, dreary day here with a below normal temp of 32. Then the sun came out, hallelujah, and it warmed up to 39! Where'd my warm above normal temps go? Thanks everyone for the New Years greetings!

Cal, glad Babes New Year's day has been a good one for her! Let's hope they all are!  Nice bear update today. Lots of nice pics. Glad they got back on line!  I finally watched the coitus episode of BBT last night on my iPad! That was a funny one with Bob Newhart. Going to watch Sherlock Holmes on PBS tonigh starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Bet you'll be watching football instead! :D

Jp, sweet pic of Fern and boyfriend! We're there lots of fireworks near your house last night? There were a few near me which was enough to scare Molly. She laid on the floor next to my bed for an hour after they stopped.

Ra, congrats to your team! Crow was cheering them on! He was cheering for Michigan State, too, but that didn't turn out as well, so he tells me! Thanks for the New Year puzzle! I see by the time on your post that you made it past midnight! :D Crow went to bed at 10:15. I watched the 11:00 news and then turned the tv off and couldn't get to sleep. So I was awake at midnight just not celebrating!

Nora, what a cute New Year greeting!

Dlong, great pics! Glad you had a nice visit with your family.

Blschue, did you get much snow? A trip to AZ sounds perfect! Hope you get the real thing and not the placebo and it helps your eyes!

Good looking Sophie.

It is already the twoth of January, 2016.  This yeare is flying by real fast.  I need to practice wsriting 2016.  It always takes me a while to get used to that change.

I do not do Chinese too well, it took me 6:04 to do that puzzle yesterday.

rues, There must not have been many fireworks near me on New Year's Eve.  I was asleep but would have awakened if there had been a lot of noise.

Everyone have a pleasant Saturday starting out the first weekend of the new year.

Moving Ahead - UPDATE January 1, 2016

Lily and Eli nose to nose - April 11, 2013
Lily and Eli nose to nose - April 11, 2013
With the start Lily Fans and other donors gave us in 2015, 2016 will shine as a year of progress in black bear science and education.

We have already mentioned the big changes in progress to upgrade the North American Bear Center and give visitors educational experiences more like visitors rave about in the new Northwoods Ecology Hall.

Lily Fans are working with collaborating professors and graduate students to organize our data for publication. As I write this, a graduate student is quietly crunching data here at the WRI. He came in the door this morning raving ecstatically about the high quality help he was getting from Lily Fan volunteers expert in data organization.

At the Bear Center, the search is on for 6 interns (expanded from last year?s 4) to help educate visitors. Director of Education Judy Thon ( [email protected]) is registering participants for her Bear Educator class this spring. Bear Educators will help care for our 4 bears and share their knowledge with visitors.

We always have an eye toward sustainability considering my age (76). We are exploring ways to increase participation of federal employees as donors to the North American Bear Center through the Combined Federal Campaign. We would also like to encourage more people to include the North American Bear Center in their wills.

Lily with Ellie and Eli - 2013 https://youtu.be/JPDHTQfDLnU
The most effective educational tool we have ever found was the Den Cams which continue to be of high public interest. Five days ago (on December 27, 2015), the Minneapolis Star Tribune mentioned them as a 2015 highlight, saying, "In other Minnesota outdoors news this year, independent bear researcher Lynn Rogers of Ely won back his right to place web cameras in bear dens." Lily Fans will remember how the DNR prohibited us from using them, offering no credible reason for the prohibition. Following up on the Court of Appeals decision favoring Den Cams, I submitted a Den Cam Permit Application to the DNR on November 6, 2015 but have not heard anything back. My usual mode of operation in the face of opposition is to move ahead doing something good. One thought with the Den Cams is that my work would speak for itself and there would be no need to counter the DNR?s public campaign to discredit my work and hamper the North American Bear Center. Without the Den Cams, the DNR?s accusations stand unchallenged. So, as part of the Bear Center?s sustainability, there is a need to expose dishonesties of the DNR case as a step in restoring the public credibility upon which our educational efforts are based:

1. While the DNR was telling the public that I do not publish, it was working behind the scenes to prevent me from publishing. The DNR illegally withheld from the court all paperwork that would expose what it was doing. When the court became aware, it obtained the papers and sanctioned the DNR.

2. While telling the public that its actions against me would not impact the North American Bear Center, the DNR illegally prevented the Bear Center from acquiring an ideal bear that we needed and that was in need of a home. The Attorney General informed the DNR in writing that its actions preventing this were illegal.

3. While telling the public that we train bears to go up to people for food, the DNR failed to produce a single witness to back that up.

4. To create its case against me, the DNR altered evidence, misdated pictures, and used videos and pictures that had nothing to do with my research. For example, the DNR used a picture of a captive-raised bear snuggled up to its owner in a pen in Wisconsin as an example of my wild research around Ely.

5. To further create a case against my research, the DNR filed bear complaints in people?s names without their knowledge or words. Representative David Dill, before he died, exposed this reprehensible DNR effort against me and got it stopped. The DNR agreed to remove falsified complaints from its files but presented them nevertheless in the hearing. The judge became aware of this. She mentioned DNR ?inaccuracies? in her decision, and stated that the DNR had no true evidence to show that public safety was a greater or lesser issue in our study area than anywhere else.

6. As the record shows, Commissioner Tom Landwehr decided to pull my permit in early 2011 when he became angry about letters requesting protection for radio-collared bears. His staff told him the DNR had no cause to pull my permit. The Commissioner then spent over $500,000 of taxpayer money to create a ?cause.? To do that, he worked with three officials who have records of failed, dishonest, and/or illegal efforts to derail my research and education.

Court records show the above to be true. On November 6, 2015, I asked the DNR to grant the Den Cam Permit, get behind it, and show the world what we can accomplish together. I realize that could be embarrassing to the DNR after its efforts to discredit me and my research these last several years. I would prefer to quietly do Den Cam research and education and let that work speak for me instead of exposing the DNR?s dishonest and illegal practices. Although the judge ruled that the DNR has the authority to give or rescind research permits. However, there is no cause to prohibit Den Cam research and education that is supported by the Court of Appeals.

Thank you for all you do.

3:38 on the circle tombstone puzzle.  Hadn't done circles for a while.

I love when Dr. Rogers said "My usual mode of operation in the face of opposition is to move ahead doing something good."

Hi JP, Cal, Rues, anyone!

That was adorable with Eli and Lily nose to nose.

Up to 25 from 17 overnight, sunny, and the wind is cold.

Hi Cal! I watched Hyacinth this morning. The episode where she got new living room furniture and was giving Daisy her old set. Of course, nothing goes as planned! Wow, sounds like Augie caused a little mayhem yesterday morning! Glad you and others weren't hurt! Was Corey dog scared? Sorry Babe's night didn't go so well. Crow was just complaining about the Mountaineers game time tonight. I think he said 10 or 10:30 because it's in AZ. He will never make it thru the entire game! I'm excited about Downton tomorrow evening, too! Just one prob for me...Robin's plane is scheduled to land at 8:40! Hope it lands earlier. The airport is about half hour away. Crow said he could go get her himself but I don't want her to think I chose a tv program over her! Lol! Funniest thing happened while I was reading your post telling me about Smaug in the Hobbit! Crow was actually watching the Hobbit so I asked him if he knew that the Sherlock guy played Smaug. He didn't know that, but he did know that Ian McKellen was on Vicious! Lol! That Sherlock movie last night was weird. It's on again next week so I might watch it again. :-\  Cute dog shame. At least he put the flip flops back into the closet! Lol! I've had some problems getting in here on my laptop and my iPad. Eventually it lets me in!

Jp, one fine pic of Sophie! Glad there were no fireworks to wake you up! I know what you mean about getting used to writing 2016. I have already filled in the 16 on half the checks in my checkbook otherwise I would, for sure, write 15 on them!   :D

Nora, how's Joe doing? It was really cold here this morning. It was 27 when I got up at 8. It was in the 30's all day and sunny. By next weekend we are supposed to be back in the 50's. Yay!

Tender Moments - UPDATE January 2, 2016

Lucky and Holly
Lucky and Holly
I would not have thought it. Lucky and Holly are snuggled together in one bed and interacting in gentle, tender ways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr4ZZF3xDtU I wouldn?t have thought it because we never saw anything like this when Ted and Lucky or Honey and Lucky shared this same den. It shows there is always something new to learn and that 48 years of bear study doesn?t show you everything. Seeing Lucky and Holly in this 3 ? minute video makes me want to have Den Cams all the more. What is happening in dens across the forest that we haven?t seen in the 7 dens we have watched with wild Den Cams. What kinds of feelings do bears develop for each other?

Speaking of Den Cams, a Lily Fan asked why I don?t just go ahead and put in a Den Cam since the Court of Appeals said I could? The reason is that as soon as the DNR saw that ruling they had the Attorney General?s office send me a letter warning me that they would strictly enforce a law against disturbing a bear den. I could put a Den Cam in an unoccupied den before November 1, but if a bear began using that den and I went back to wipe the lens or realign the camera after November 1, I would be cited for disturbing a den. Legal counsel told me that the law against disturbing a den is so vague that they?d have a hard time making a case. I also had been told by the DNR a few years back that I need not report to them each visit to a den because they didn?t consider most of my visits to be a disturbance. These were visits to wipe the lens or realign cameras. But that advice from the DNR was verbal, so I have no written record of it.

What all this shows is that the prohibition on my using Den Cams is based purely on animosity, not any valid reason.

The law against disturbing a den was written to back up the law against shooting a bear in a den. It meant hunters couldn?t roust a bear from a den and shoot it as it exited. I don?t know of anyone who has ever been cited for looking in a bear den. In fact, the DNR asked deer hunters to report any bear dens they found. That would mean looking into dens to make sure they actually contained bears. But in my case, they would cite me for disturbing a den. Since the court found no safety issues associated with Den Cams and the Court of Appeals said I could use Den Cams, I thought it worthwhile to apply for a Den Cam permit. There should be no reason to deny such a permit.

On the upside, I was happy to see the number of likes on the Facebook page ?Lily the Black Bear? (spelled with one L) surge over 201,000 today.

If anyone missed the 12-minute video of January 1 showing moments from Lily?s life, it is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=degmdXAoUEU. It starts with June licking little cub Lily dry in spring 2007 after the family was flooded out of their den by a March thaw. Scenes from 2010 and 2011 include the most vigorous play scenes I have ever seen. It?s playful Hope with Lily. The video captures Faith?s attentiveness to Hope?also mutual tongue-licking (a bonding activity) between Lily and yearling Hope. It ends with Lily with Eli and Ellie in 2013. A good follow-up is this 7-minute video of Lily, Eli, and Ellie frolicking outside their den on April 22, 2013, the day they finally left the den when the cubs were 101 days old. Lily had been at the den nearly 7 ? months (225 days). She looked happy to roll in the melting snow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNhoni9RYLE.

Thank you for all you do.
