Straw Wars - UPDATE November 23, 2015
Female Pileated
Female Pileated

This 2-minute video from today shows impolite interactions between Lucky and Holly as Holly reaches too far for bedding, taking it from Lucky, and Lucky objects, making Holly say a couple naughty words. Good thing we don?t have sound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm9w6ZtfTu8& feature=youtu.be. But they stayed together. Could bedding wars be a reason bears don?t usually den together, other than mothers with big cubs? I suspect they?ll get another bale or two of straw tomorrow.
I always go to the Thanksgathering and almost forgot last night. Ray Thielbar, former vice-chairman of the North American Bear Center, started the Thanksgathering tradition 22 years ago. All the churches in Ely take part, sending their choirs, soloists, etc. The Bear Center?s own Judy McClure, a master pianist, does most of the accompaniments. It?s a celebration of music. It starts at 6 PM with a half hour of Prelude Music?amazing piano solos from the top pianists around, including Judy McClure?kind of like the old Hymn Sings. Then comes the Main Program from 6:30-8:30, followed by food in the basement. It goes from 6 PM til after 10 PM. Peter Johnson, who made the great Habitat Exhibit in the new Ecology Hall, was there with his wife who participated in the program. Although Ray Thielbar is getting out of the sign-carving business, he didn?t forget the Bear Center. The beautiful signs that are a significant part of the facelift in the Bear Center are his last hurrah of wood-carving. He put his heart into them as Lily Fans will see.
Out the window, a female pileated woodpecker showed up at the suet?probably the mate of the male that was here 5 days ago. This makes me hopeful they?ll nest outside the window again. The nest tree is a dead red pine that I topped 15-20 years ago and left a stump 35-40 feet tall hoping it would attract woodpeckers. I didn?t know it would turn into a pileated nest that has been used 3 times. You can tell the pileated woodpecker is a female because she has a brown (not red) forehead and she has black (not red) moustachial stripes running back from her bill.
I still haven?t heard anything from the DNR on the Den Cams. The application began with ?I realize the Court of Appeals said I do not need a permit to place Den Cams, but my goal is to work cooperatively with the DNR on this project that is so strongly in the public interest. I am asking that the DNR grant the Den Cam permit, get behind it, and take pride in what we can bring to Minnesota with DNR support.?
I wish they would do that. My goal is always to move forward.
Thank you for all you do.
