Cold today, but sunny & beautiful. Saw a red-tailed hawk fly over today--we have quite a few in the woods across the road. Still seeing turkey vultures and saw a robin yesterday. I've read that no all robins migrate, but what would they eat during winter? We found 21 little toy mice under the basement stairs, washed them and now they are dried and in a freezer bag with catnip. Hope that gets rid of the detergent smell.  That Jules cat of mine loves them, but they get knocked under the frig., stove, down the basement stairs, etc. At least I can keep the basement door closed. Wish she liked the large toy mice we have. I love knowing that all you wonderful Jewelies are out there!!!!

Good evening Jewelies! It is so dark out now. The one thing I hate about regular time is that it gets dark at 5 pm! Now it's almost 7 and it feels like it should be midnight! :-\

Jp, I forgot to thank you for the info on the Fantasy Fest! So thank you! :)

Cal, what a cute dog shame with Lucy! Funny that she pooped! :D Wow, that guy sure did have some weapons! Glad he was caught. I don't know why they run from the law, they know it just makes things worse when they are finally caught!  Sounds like all your kids love their cookies! Molly loves sandwich cookies and when she hears the lid popping off the cookie jar she comes running! I've seen a shirt that says I have your back! Thought it was really cute! How are you making them?  Saw today where that Missouri college president resigned.

Ra, that was so nice of the other teams to help your squad! That was good sportsmanship for sure! I don't like the gamecocks, either! What a horrible thing to have fighting chickens as your mascot!

Obsver, so happy that your checkup was a good one! Your cholesterol is better than mine and I take statins!  Today Crow and I went to Robin's to check see why you could smell gas in the oven. We pulled the stove out from the wall and found that the connection needed tightened. We also found cat toys, a wooden Christmas ornament and a sink stopper! :D Hmmm, wonder how they got there....could it be Wilson!  :D  Our robins stay here for winter. I think as long as the ground doesn't freeze they can get worms and then there's berries, fruits and seeds. I've put raisins and apples out for them. My hair seems to have grown a lot this month! Anne says your hair grows faster in warm weather! It was warm last week! Maybe she does know what she is talking about!

Hi Nora and Willi!

Hello Jewelies!
Looks like there was some serious celebrating going on in this thread.... Congrats to the KC Royals on their win.

My father had a heart attack Sunday Nov 1st.  He has a history of heart problems.  It is not his first one.  He has had two open heart surgeries, a quad and a quintuple, multiple stents and now his heart was damaged more and he has atrial fibrillation.  The doctors did some scans and angiograms, told him that there is not going to be anything else that they can do for him.  His risks outweigh the benefits of any intervention, other than medication.  He has been fighting this coronary disease for the last 40 years, so I guess  the family feels blessed to have had him with us for as long as his heart continues to beat.  I spent the week taking care of my folks.  Youth is so wasted on the young.  Getting old sucks.  I know one always says that a parent should not have to bury their child, but what about a child not being ready to bury a parent?  That would be me.  Please pray that the good Lord teaches me to accept the things that I cannot change and gives my folks the peace that they are so deserving of for the time that they are still on this earth.

I may be a bit busy moving forward, so I will try to check in whenever I can find the time.  May each of you have a blessed Thanksgiving.  Thank you to each and everyone of you for always putting a smile on my face when I log into the Jewel thread.
Peace, Eaglette.

Faith's (Lily's daughter in 2011) 2 male cubs.

Good karma today to all.

Eaglette, my prayers for your father.  He has  gone through, and will continue to go through, a lot with the faith, caring and prayers from family and friends.  I can only try to imagine how he feels with so much problem with his heart.  I have had a quintuple bypass and some stents, but nothing like your father.  How old is he?  If you mentioned it I missed that.  The serenity prayer will be of great comfort to you in this trying time.

Another big crowd in town this week as it is the World Championship of powerboat racing.. Boats from all over the world compete in this race each year.  It is considered the Indianapolis 500 of powerboat racing.  The motto is "You aren't the best until you win in Key West".  There are some 40 boats entered in about 4-5 classes, from big to little.

hope each of you has a pleasant Tuesday.

Lily Fan Gathering, Nature, and History - UPDATE November 9, 2015

Sandhill Cranes
Sandhill cranes
The Gathering at Mystic Lake Hotel was as expected?wonderful Lily Fans having fun and making me thankful for what we have together. They reminded me how Lily Fans as a group strive to spread the truth about bears. I felt the dedication and friendship this group represented.  Mystic Bearhead gathering November 7, 2015

The next day, Donna and I changed plans and decided to hike a place she has long wanted to visit?Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. It is a big swath of wetland habitat that follows the Minnesota River through Minneapolis to the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. I left my big camera behind so I wouldn?t get lost in photography, but then we both lamented missing good pictures. The spot turned out to be richer in nature than we anticipated. An eagle flew over, and hundreds of ducks took flight to land where they started after the eagle passed. Trumpeter swans, North America?s largest bird, stayed put, maybe knowing they were big enough not to worry. A snapping turtle was still active in this unusually mild fall, so we snapped a picture with my little pocket camera.

That evening, Donna and I stayed with former DNR Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner, Allen and Kim Garber. They made decisions in 1999-2002 that set me on the path that ended up being the Bear Center, the Den Cams, and all the research since 1999. Allen is a soft-spoken man who can?t be buffaloed. His history as an army captain in the central highlands of the Vietnam War, a paratrooper, a SWAT team leader for the FBI, and a police chief in Minnesota gave him the leadership ability to stand up to intimidation and stick to decisions he believes are right. In my case, he listened to DNR naysayers, including David Garshelis, did a personal investigation of motives, and told powerful officials to get on board or walk. He respects people who give him their opinions but know enough to follow orders when a decision is made. After his visit with me and the bears in the field, he was the only one in the DNR who truly knew what we do. He stood his ground and moved my study forward. He told a little about this in his book ?Striving to Be the Best.?  He could afford to be fair because he was not part of the old boy network and was not trying to make friends in high places so he could get a job with the DNR when the governorship that appointed him passed to new hands with the next election. He had the full support of Governor Jesse Ventura. He shakes his head at what the present DNR officials are trying to do to end my research, and he had the courage to testify in the hearing a year and a half ago. He still plays hockey at 73. It was a joy for Donna and I to spend a night in their home. We became friends shortly after he was appointed Commissioner in 1999.

Today, we looked for Sandhill Cranes in Crex Meadows in Wisconsin but missed the big flight out in the morning and the big flight in at dusk?they say about 11,000. We saw a few. The closest ones were in a cutover corn field.

Back at the cabin this evening, wolves howled, a great-horned owl hooted, and a beaver slapped its tail?good sounds back home in the familiar forest.

Thank you for all you do.

The Facelift - UPDATE November 10, 2015

NABC exhibits
NABC exhibits
This past summer, we heard rave reviews about the Northwoods Ecology Hall that Lily Fans helped make possible. It is beautiful and educational. Standing in the spacious new Hall and seeing the smiles and interest of children and parents makes me feel gratitude to all who made it what it is. It is kid-friendly. It appeals to the senses. The sounds of nature along with videos showing what makes the sounds often gets special mention. The concepts came from questions and suggestions we heard from teachers, parents, Lily Fans, and others over the years.

Even as we continue to add exhibits to the Ecology Hall, we are doing what we can to bring the old Bear Center portion up to the new kid-friendly standards of the Ecology Hall. A major change in the Bear Center will be to put the exhibits at a more kid-friendly level. This will mean eliminating the tall, claustrophobic carpeted panels and putting the exhibits on beautiful birch-wood platforms. Only five feet tall, the platforms will have slanted walls to hold the exhibits and narrow flat tops to hold video screens and artifacts. Instead of feeling hemmed in by carpeted walls, visitors will be able to see across the Bear Center. They will be able to see signs hanging from the ceiling identifying exhibit locations, and they will also be able to see a whole new set of bear pictures, many of them bears Lily Fans know, spot-lighted on the upper walls?plus new information in the captions.

The goal, as always, is more education?now in a more kid-friendly way. The above is part of the face-lift we are reaching out to Lily Fans to make possible on Give to the Max Day, November 12.

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do. The facelift we are hoping to do will make a big difference for the effectiveness and future of the Bear Center.
