It took me 10:40 to realize all the  viewers were roosters.  Must have been a hen in the movie.

Ra, it was a jeans, short-sleeved shirt and lightweight hoodie, but shorts while mowing kind of day. Started to lightly rain about 30 min. after I finished. In Michigan, what is that casserole called? I had my usual this morning--2 hard-fried eggs, extra crisp bacon and a pancake. Rues, in my primary, I had a 2- minute-wait, and we vote electronically. I usually vote around 9:30 to avoid the a.m. and p.m. crowds. I live 2 mi. from a very, very small town. Cal, I saw a long (well long to ME!) garter snake in the yard while I was mowing and thought of you. Next week, we are going to take another stray tom to be neutered. He is a real macho guy and a pain in the ??.., because he is so unpleasant to my neutered males. The charge is only $45, and I'm hoping this takes care of his aggression. Almost 10:00, so time for bed. I checked out of the lib. John Sandford's Extreme Prey. Anyone read it yet?  Goodnight, Jewelies!

Hello to all.  Don't want to bum anyone out, but that lil guy at DNN, #3, it is dead.  No shocker there.

Hopefully, RRP can get to the nest at the end of the season and get DNN3 and the Decorah egg out of their respective nests and send them off to a laboratory that can take a look at what caused these two to not thrive.

My foot ailment is most likely caused by my stroke of 5 years ago this July which affected my right side including my gait.  I was wearing the wrong shoes for the last year, which the podiatrist said created the playground for the pain in my ball of the foot to develop.  He thought it was an inflammation, like a fatty tumor.  He did xrays and ultrasound.  The xrays ruled out any damage to the bones, but the ultrasound showed the inflammation.  He prescribed a cream that is an anti inflammatory to try to reduce the swelling.  I am to rest the foot, ice it and then heat it before applying the cream on the bottom of my foot, several times a day.    Nothing exciting.   However, I do not have orthodics coverage with Medicare nor do I want to spend $300-$400 for a pair of shoes made especially for my feet, so the doctor recommended a shoe by a company called Altra, which is a runner's shoe with a large toe box and a zero drop heel, with good foot support.  Those were $130 out the door.  Expensive, yet I can do that easier than the custom made shoes.  Some of you may recall the 1970's Earthshoes or Root shoes brands, that is what they do to your foot and gait.

Glad I could bring a smile on some of your faces.  I will be working this thread through the weekend, so please come back and let me entertain you some more.   ;D

A mother bear and her cubs in a tree.  What fun that tree must be.

I changed my smartphone from an IPhone to an Android and am working on migrating music, pictures, contacts, etc.over from the old to the new.  And learning the capabilities of the new phone.

We've got one of these.

Daily Updates
Fern, Braveheart, Ted - UPDATE May 12, 2016
12 May 2016
Print Email
Regarding 4-year-old Fern and 14-year-old Bravheart, I just received these emails:
Fern: ?We just had Fern, no cubbies with her. Clearly lactating. Ted close-up
Ted close-up
We followed her just a little to the vacant property next to us. She was nervous about that, so we didn't push it, we want her to bring her family when she is ready.?:
Braveheart: ?We also had Braveheart with Gen and Porter this morning, no Stratton.?

My interpretation is that Fern has cubs and Braveheart has not had family break-up yet. Also, Stratton continues to stray, which I don?t believe is a worry.

Ted sticking his tongue out
Ted sticks his tongue out
At the Bear Center, Ted was a sweetheart, as usual. He made his friendly sounds throughout my time with him. It was treat time for him as we tried to get him in position for a picture with the sun at our back so his eyes would show nicely. Everyone tried as hard as they could. I couldn?t get Ted to look at me until Sharon got behind me with the food bucket at the end, and that?s one of the shots here. Most of the time I was wondering how Jim Stroner does so well getting pictures for the calendar. He gets perfect eye shots. Earlier in the video here, I?m trying to get a shot up at Ted with blue sky behind him, but he came too close for me to use my longer lens and had to use my little Canon G11 with the scratched up lens. The scratches showed up in the picture and Ted stuck his tongue out at me. I?ll have to ask Jim how he does it.

Ted's Photo Shoot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7s7wM0s-cA

Out in the woods, bear foods are coming up. I saw three scats today?all full of nothing but vegetation. Big-leaf aster is at the perfect stage for bear food. Peavine is coming up and is probably delectable at this stage, but that is a food they will continue eating even when it is mature. With bear food coming on like that, no wonder we?re not seeing many bears here yet
 Peavine    Big-leaf aster    Herring gull
Out the window, the least-tame gull is looking in at me and talking. He is recognizable by the big red dots on his bill and by having a big nostril opening on the right side of his bill and a skinny opening on the left.

Thank you for all you do.

Eaglette I hope that works for your foot pain.  You're right, those shoes are expensive, but nothing compared to custom made and should still help.

We're running at 54 today and looks to be rain on the way, although the heavier rain seems to be going east and JUST north of us.  I should run to the store quick.

Love the cubs in the tree JP  :)  Ted's eyes look so small for his head, sort of reminds me of Chester's.  :D

Catch you later gators.....

Hi Jewelies!  It's been pretty nice here today, a little hot though.  Going to go to a yogurt/ice cream place today with my daughter.  She's dropping off the oldest grand and her newest "like", then picking me up and going back.  They have that Hawaiian blizzard like thing, like Dairy Queen, vanilla ice cream, bananas, pineapple, coconut.  So good!  I've been hungry for one lately, so I asked if I could come and meet the new "like".  The concert was wonderful!  Those kids are SO good!  My grand had a solo, and that was real special.  Only bad thing was the teacher handed out all kinds of awards and pins... took forever.  I really needed to get home!!  Blacklist was on!!  I was about 20 minutes late for it.  I think I taped it, so I'll have to go back and watch it all over again.

cal... When we go to the Japanese restaurant, there is a huge grill and everyone sits around it while a guy grills all the food.  He makes fried rice and veggies and whatever meat you order to go with it.  It's quite entertaining!  They throw the stuff up in the air and spin stuff around, etc.  Doesn't seem like Fern is old enough to have babies!  It would be nice if the people who see our bears would get a pic of them!  Hope Polly hits it big on the lottery one of these days!!

obsver... I think we called that breakfast dish a casserole in Michigan, too.  Shoot, I've been here for over 30 years and can't remember a lot of stuff anymore!  lol  I would surely starve if all I had for breakfast at a restaurant was a pancake, eggs, and a couple pieces of bacon!  lol  I like to eat "big" when I eat out!   :D  Down here, if you go to the animal shelter and get a certificate, you can neuter an animal really cheap.  Seems like I paid $30 for Handsome, or something like that.

Eaglette... Hate to hear anyone having foot issues... I've gone through enough of it myself.  After I had my last bunion surgery, I had inserts for my shoes.  The inserts alone were around $300, very pricey.  Insurance didn't pay anything.  I wore them until they fell apart and have never replaced them.  Hope your foot feels better real soon.  Feel free to post as much as you want here!!  We're always glad to read what everyone has to say.  Right, guys?

JP... What an unusual tree!  Looks like a pine, but very gnarly!  I have a big hemlock tree and the branches are like a spiral staircase.  Lily has always liked going up in that tree!

rues... We finally got some rain last night, started just before we had to leave for the concert.  Not too much, but more than the sprinkles we've been getting lately.  My grand surprised us with her solo... she said she thought she told us already.  Same as the cheerleading... Oh, I thought I told you I was going to be on varsity and a flyer.  She the forgetful one.  lol  We sat way up in the balcony, first time we tried sitting there.  It was a good view of the stage and hardly anyone else up there.  They sang a real good variety of songs, too.

Hi Nora, dlong, willi, blschue, and everyone else!  Hope you're having a lucky Friday, the 13th!!

cal... Those look like nice boots!  I've got some Timberland boots that look a lot like them.  I've had them for years and they're still like new.  I've even worn them on the shores of Lake Superior!  lol

No, cal...  lol... I did NOT wear my boots swimming!  lol  I wore them while I was there finding rocks.  I don't know if it's ever warm enough to swim in that cold lake!!  I don't swim anyway, anywhere.  I don't like the water at all.  I was raised on a lake, but my brothers tried to teach me how to swim by throwing me off the end of the dock.  It didn't work... all it did was make me afraid of the water.  I have all kinds of phobias because of them...   ???

This is Donna whose last two litters have each been 4 cubs.

Up late watching the Marlins lose so I think I  will be grumpy today.

Not too grumpy to wish you all a good Saturday with good weather, good spirits, good luck  and a "good for you" when the day is through.

Daily Updates
Bears, Wildlife Action, and Snow- UPDATE May 13, 2016
13 May 2016
Print Email
Braveheart?s yearlings, including the missing Stratton, were all seen. Family breakup was last evening, Bald eagle watching
Bald eagle watching
May 12, by 7:30 PM.

Fern was seen again but the number and sexes of her cubs is still a mystery.

Big action started midday when I dumped a small box of meat trimmings, mostly fat, in the yard. Crows came first but were timid for a few minutes. I don?t know what was holding them back, but once they got into it, they were ravenous.

Within an hour, a turkey vulture landed in a big red pine and watched. Soon 5 were circling.

Next a pair of ravens timidly tried to get their share. At first one landed, nervously jumped up and down a few times and flew off. Then it began flying in, dipping down and grabbing a piece without landing, and flying off. Many trips.

Snow over Woods Lake

Four turkey vultures landed and took over briefly. A brave raven came and chased a vulture as the vulture hurried away with fat in its beak, looking over its shoulder at the ravenous raven. The vulture kept it?s meal, but the raven had some things to say about it (photo below).

Strange gulls came in addition to the tame one, but only briefly.

An eagle watched from a big red pine but never joined in.

As the supply of fat dwindled, there were big birds flying everywhere. Five turkey vultures circled over for over an hour, ravens and crows were chasing crows that were flying off with food in their beaks.

Raven with vulture   Raven after vulture   Raven with fat
Raven had a few things to say   ...goes ater vulture   ...and flies away with fat
Then the snow started. High wind and lateral snow. Visibility across Woods Lake was poor (Photo). It seemed odd to be in a blizzard at 39?F. More snow came as the temperature dropped to 31?F. Enough snow is on the ground that a person has to be careful. Slipping and falling due to a snowstorm on Friday the 13th of May would be bad luck.

Thank you for all you do.
