Bobcat Again - UPDATE December 27, 2022

Bobcat juvenile
Seeing fresh, 4-toed, clawless, direct-register (back foot track on top of the front foot track) tracks on the front steps today, I was on the lookout for the little bobcat. I didn’t have to look far! Soon, there it was on the second floor deck right outside my window. I don’t think it’s been up here before. Bobcat from 12-26-22
Bobcat from 12-26-22
My first reaction was being shocked how small it was—only a quarter, maybe a third the size of the adults I’d seen this past winter. I had the wrong camera but tried to squeeze the bobcat into the picture—almost. I just cut off the tip of its nose and the tip of its black and white-tipped tail, catching it between two railing posts that measured 22 ½ inches between the inside edges. It wasn’t much bigger than a big housecat. I moved over to the door and met this curious cat looking in. I opened the door a crack to drop a slice of bologna. It bolted to the far end of the deck, and I don’t know how it got down to the ground. Sometime later, it was in the parking area going into the open car port where there is an entrance to a labyrinth of woodchuck tunnels. I thought maybe it lived in there out of the wind and under the ground where the temperature is almost certainly above freezing. A few minutes later, though, it was going up the driveway and out of sight.

Last night, some of you noticed that the slinking bobcat from January 13 of this year had the same unusual dot on the same spot on its nose as this one, making me and others think the two are parent and offspring. To show the dot, I included a close-up of its face from yesterday. To better show the blob of snow that some couldn’t make out to be the forequarters of a bear last night, I put a close-up of it in tonight and saw that the reason they couldn’t make it out is because it just bearly looks like what I said.

Looking bobcats up on Wikipedia, I read that they are usually born in May or June and are on their own by fall. I don’t know where the two adults are now or why we haven’t seen this juvenile in the neighborhood before the last couple weeks. I hope the cute little guy or gal keeps coming and maybe becomes less likely to bolt.

Thank you for all you do,

7:55 Oh well. Getting nice out here.  Very sunny.  Kids out sliding on little piles of snow.  Snow melting off streets.  Don't really have anywhere to go today.  May stay in just to keep the slop and salt off my car.  Nah, probably not.  Will go somewhere no doubt, and get the car washed later.  Will park outside in the drive though to keep the slush out of my garage.  The floor is hard to clean, because it is Nature Stone.
May have to do dishes too.  Not sure yet.  Depends on what leftovers I have for lunch.  On days like this I usually wind up on my computer a lot and on the couch a lot too watching TV.  I never miss a meal though.  No matter what. LOL  It is only 11 o'clock.  Although I just got up at about 9am, and should not be hungry, I am already thinking about what is for lunch.  LOL

Catering Shack ... 24:55     55°  and raining.   🌵⛈️⛈️⛈️😊   I hope it keeps on raining for the rest of the day,  It isn't a torrential rain, but is a nice normal rain. On and off.  We can always use it here.

I hope that all of you are having the day you wanted to have.

Hi Cal, I hope you get that 50 - 60 degrees that was forecast for you.  I know there is likely to be plenty of winter left, but it is great to have a break in it once in a while.  When I think of the Ukrainian winter this year, and last, I find it just heartbreaking ...  Trying to keep their families alive in that.  I think of what would I have done with my five children?  I think I can imagine it.

Hi Joho,  You mentioned the kids playing in the snow, you don't see that much around here, unless you go up into the mountains.  I came here in 1955 at thirteen years old, and in all that time to now, we've had snow storms about half a dozen times that laid on the ground for anywhere from two to four or more days, slowly melting.  The kids go crazy, as you can imagine.  I remember my granddaughter, Bella, making a snowman near the top of the driveway.  What fun she had.  Haven't seen that in a while.

The particular left overs that I enjoyed were the pies - really, you wouldn't think there'd be any of those left, but Christmas is my daughters birthday, so we had a birthday cake besides the four pies.  I like pies better than cake.  Our dinner was Cornish Hens, plus sides.  We had never made them before, and decided to do it this year.  I am done with that, you eat them with your hands and that was a bit messy for me, for that kind of a dinner.

Holly Anniversary and Bobcat Settling In - UPDATE December 28, 2022

Bobcat and deer
Nine years ago today little Holly during the holidays, stepped out of her box, and as Sharon Herrell says, “went from a frightened skinny yearling to a now over-confident matriarch who rules her enclosure with an iron paw,” adding “I love this sweet little girl bear.” Someone brought back a memory for me by sending the picture of her arrival at eleven months of age, looking tiny compared to the two pictures Sharon sent of her taken nine years later in October of this year.

At the WRI today, the little bobcat was the center of attention for me and deer. This cat that all the books tell me is named Bob kept the deer at bay by digging where the deer wanted to eat. He just kept digging slowly, deeper into the very hard snow. I thought he must be confused by the lingering smell of a frozen ball of turkey skin and giblets that had fallen there a couple days ago, so I didn’t have a camera for the moment he put his head deep into the hole and came up with the ball of turkey. The way he looks at me makes me think he is beginning to consider me an inconsequential critter who clicks a camera but is not a threat—like the bears thought of me when I began walking with them back in the mid-1980’s. It makes me feel good not to be considered an evil threat and be allowed to see what they are doing. At one point, he looked up and gave the birds and squirrels scrambling around on the second floor deck an open-mouthed look I didn’t understand. At least it let us see what his teeth look like.

Thank you for all you do,

7:12 eyes watering. Reading Neva's weather report and memories made me smile. however her dinner description made me laugh aloud.
My mind conjectured an image of a long haired prehistoric family unit squatted around a campfire in their bear skin robes with one bare shoulder.  Each member has a firm two handed grip on an unfortunate little bird.  They are hungrily gnawing on the bird while warm juicy fat drips from their chins.  LOL She does not want to do this again.  LOL
My one Cornish Hen dinner was memorable too.  It was a family occasion. I don't recall which holiday, but my son was hosting7 or 8 of us at his new home.  He was always something of a chef and a good host.  This day he was experimenting with Cornish Hens for each.  We were all seated at his table as he began to place a hen on each dish.  I was distracted a little when he placed mine in front of me.  Probably gabbing.  Anyway I felt a very gentle brush against my leg.  I looked down and his Beagle had my hen in his mouth.  He did not run with it.  I grabbed it back. Washed it off and we had dinner. I don't recall not using a fork, but I am sure it was my only experience with Cornish Hens.
It is 45 degrees here now at almost 10 am. No rain yet. I think tomorrow it will rain and Sat. too.
I did have plenty of leftovers this week. Haven't been to the store for quite a while.
Gonna make another cup of coffee now.  So CUL EV1. Looking forward to a happy New Year for all of us. GBU and GB Ukraine

He was a gentle dog Cal.  He knew he done wrong.  Just could not resist I guess.  I never knew him to reach the table before or since.  Something special about that bird I guess.
I think Neva licking her fingers by now. I am jealous Neva.
I must be getting hungry.  I am imagining a good warm lunch already.  It is only 11 am. LOL

Foley's Pub ... 22:40     55°   (8:44 pm)  Heavy clouds all day and the possibility of rain ... all day, till now.  It was a good day.

I hope it was a good day for all of you.

Hi Cal,   I'm glad to hear that you had it a bit warmer.  `It is really something, the state that this world is in -  A child and his family, all they have is each other and their faith, but at the same time, he is left wishing he could kill someone; I can't really blame him.  I bet there are many Russians that would love to take Putin out, if they could get anywhere near him.

Hi Joho,   Your rendition of our Cornish Hen dinner is hilarious.  That is what it felt like.  Talented Beagle, your son has.  That was pretty good for a small dog...  and that was kind and brave of you to be willing to wash it off and eat it.  What we do for our kids.  lol!

4:20 A new record for me.  Thanks Cal for keeping them coming.
Hot out here, and lots of rain coming.  I kind of like it warm like this.  Less clothes needed.
Neva, I am glad you have a good sense of humor.  I wanted you to chuckle, and seems you did.
Yes after all the effort and research that was done by our chef that day, I could not see it wasted.  Duke was not punished either.  He was just being a dog, and giving his thumbs up to Cornish Hens the only way he knew how.
Falcon cam went berserk for you Cal.  I have not seen that except once at the bear pond cam.  I also had to turn it off due to nausea.  The deer at Snowman were working hard to get down to the leftover seeds under the snow.  The car seemed to turn around just out of sight of the camera.  I think there is a driveway to the left of our view.
I had an adventure this morning. Woke early and wanted to read a paper with breakfast.  Drove around looking for an open restaurant.  It was too early for most.  It was before 7 am when most open up.  I did pass Hazel's and saw a man reading a paper at his table near the window.  So I decided to drive to the C-T where my paper is printed.  Sure enough there was a pink plastic bag on the porch.  In the past when I was missed by the carrier they would leave a paper for me to pickup there.  So I thought this was an extra left for whoever needed one.  Well when I got home I found that it was not even my C-T.  No, it was three Journals which belonged to the C-T employees.  Sooo, after breakfast while reading a Journal,  I called them and took the papers back.  They were glad, and I was not arrested for stealing them.  I really miss my morning C-T.
Well don't know what this day will bring, but it started off fine for me.
