6:46 Eyes all watery. Unusually warm again and heavy fog.  I love foggy mornings.  I love to walk in the fog.  Not so good for driving.  It is 46 at 8:16 am.
Yay Chiefs, and yay Browns!  Wish I could have seen these game, but sandman took over and I slept through the whole game.  I saw the beginning of the Browns game with Chubb doing great, but the next thing I saw was a recap show.  I had to Google the score so I knew who won when I went to Debbie's with Boss.  What a good visit I had with Boss.  He can come over any time.  He was very glad to get home and see Debbie though.
Was a nice New Years day even though I slept through most of it.
Neva your pic is beautiful.  The view out the window is very different than around here.  We might see a rainbow, but we will not see palm trees and huge desert plants as are showing in the pic.

Banana Inflorescence ... 27:47    48°  (11:22 am)   Rainy this morning, and still heavily cloudy.  Nice day, but chilly.

I hope all is well with everyone.  So far, so good around here... in my house anyway.  Aw, I can hear it's raining again,⛈️⛈️

In my brother's house, not so good. I found out yesterday that my brother is in the hospital, as of a couple of days ago.  He is the one with cancer.  My sister-in-law didn't call me, my daughter up in Wyoming called me.  So, I spoke to SIL, Debbie and she thinks he will come home today.  He was trying to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell, hitting his head.  I am going over there Weds afternoon to visit with him.  He was the guy that about three years ago, was lifting weights at the gym four days a week.  Now he is so vulnerable looking, skin and bones.  It's sad, but I won't let on what I am thinking.  I'll just keep praying.

Cal, something interesting about Harrison Ford --->   He is a Master Carpenter, and when he showed up in Hollywood, before the acting started to pan out for him, he worked on projects for some of the actors and musicians out there,  For instance, creating a music recording studio (I forget who for),

Joho ...  Glad you and Boss had such a great visit.  Glad also you like the picture Michelle took.  She is slowly getting into photography.  That camera on her cellphone is a good one, and it is amazing how much you can do with a good cell phone camera.  She has a couple of other cameras too.

We Lost a Friend - UPDATE January 2, 2023

Ray Thielbar
Ray Thielbar was with me nearly from the beginning in creating the North American Bear Center, on the board, eventually vice-chairman, and then working to beautify the Bear Center with his beautifully carved signs as seen here.

One of Rays signs
One of Ray's signs

He was known to the community in so many ways. He had a rich bass voice we loved hearing in his barbershop quartet and gospel quartet. Shortly after arriving in Ely in the early 1990’s, he brought all the Ely churches together by creating the annual Thanksgathering event held each year around Thanksgiving in Ely Baptist Church with choirs from the various churches taking their turns. Each year for over two decades, this gathering was the biggest church event of the year. The music and congregational singing was spectacular, highlighted by his quartet.

We were close friends who shared a love for bears and nature.

Now, with his death at 86 on December 28, the outpouring of comments by people who will miss him is a reflection of who he was.

He and his wife Rose wrote a book “Rooted in Rocky Soil,” about their lives together (available on Amazon), which won honorable mention in the Northeastern Minnesota book awards in 2019.

I am thankful for his life and all that he and his wife Rose did for bears.

Thank you for all you do,
Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

7:07 Good morning EV1.
Debbie's been sick with chest and head stuffiness for over a month.  Yesterday she called to say that her son Brian is also similarly sick, and wants to test for covid.  I took three test kits to her last evening.  She tested negative.  This made me feel better.  It is odd times for us all.  To be glad your daughter is sick is just wrong.  It is what covid had brought us to.
I did not hear from Brian yet.  Praying he is not contagious for his two boy's sake.
Boss was glad to see me as usual, he blocked my path again as I was trying to leave.  He acts so human sometimes.  I wish he could talk.  Debbie has told me on many occasions that he is a mind reader.  I am starting to see why she thinks this.  I sure love him.
Now I will leave you all for a while to have a good day I hope.  CUL EV1 GBU and GB Ukraine.

6:29 Good morning ya'll.  Warm and wet this morning.  Not my favorite, but bearable.  Coffee, cereal, and morning pills on board.  Paper saved from yesterday has been read.  It is odd reading stories saying something is happening today, then looking at the date and seeing yesterdays date.  Hard to get used to.  However, comics and Dear Abby fix on board.  Paper in recycle bag.  All animal cams looked at. Jewel chats all read.  I am finally ready for the day. LOL

Holly Shedding Her Foot Pads? Plus the Bobcat - UPDATE January 4, 2023

Bobcat with turkey back
The video is too dark for most people to guess what is going on, but I believe "Taught" caught Holly removing her foot pads. It’s January. The time is right. And Holly was persistent in what I thought was licking and biting the foot pad that she kept turning toward her mouth. You can tell me if this is wishful thinking or if you are guessing the same thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4Grv_84Dps. In my paper on that I said I didn’t know if bears did that in southern states with much briefer denning periods. Even though Holly came from Arkansas, she has northern Minnesota genes from the bears that were shipped there from here back in the 1960’s. So the mystery of what happens in southern states continues. Here’s what I wrote back in 1974 with a picture of a partially shed foot pad. Rogers, L. L. 1974. Shedding of foot pads by black bears during denning. J. Mamm. 55(3):672-674. Click on the title to see the whole 3-page paper.

Then came the most exciting sight out the window of this 4th of January—the bobcat. He could see me at my desk a few feet away and was looking at me. He watched as I aimed the camera and turned off the inside lights to get rid of reflections in the window. That made it harder for him to see me. He looked thoughtful for a few seconds and then calmly walked down the steps and under the front deck. Twenty minutes later, he was back (6:20 PM). He looked at me a lot, then turned his attention to every other direction, letting me turn off the lights without him noticing. He looked frequently up where I had a Christmas turkey back with some meat on it. After a couple minutes, he leaped up, came forward with his eyes on me, and then lifted the turkey back, leaped down, and was gone. I’d been hoping I’d see him outside my window at my level, and he came though.

Thank you bobcat.

And thank you all for all you do.

8:07 Wild cats don't mind the cold.
Cool and dry this morning.  35 degrees, partly cloudy.
My Granddaughter Shannon and a lot of her dog owner friends are praying that the ground will please either dry out or freeze so the dogs feet will stay a little cleaner.  I too am tired of the mud.  Especially when Boss has to go.  He likes to scat with his giant claws.  What a mess.
Doc sure has a way with wildlife, and his camera.  We are blessed to know him.  I wish everyone did.
Thanks to you all for being here.

Ukraine for Russian Orthodox Christmas
Ukraine indicated it wouldn’t support such a move, and has long viewed suggestions of a truce as favoring Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to observe a 36-hour cease-fire in Ukraine for Russian Orthodox Christmas this weekend and called on Kyiv to do the same, a move that Ukraine appeared to swiftly reject.
Putin instructed his defense minister to institute the cease-fire “along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine” starting at midday local time (4 a.m. ET) Friday, the Kremlin said in a statement posted on Telegram on Thursday. The proposed Christmas truce would last until midnight local time (4 p.m. ET) Saturday.
Kyiv indicated its forces wouldn’t observe the cease-fire and has long viewed suggestions of a truce as efforts to buy time for Moscow.
“First. Ukraine doesn’t attack foreign territory and doesn’t kill civilians. As [Russia] does. Ukraine destroys only members of the occupation army on its territory...” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said on Twitter after Putin’s announcement. “Second. [Russia] must leave the occupied territories — only then will it have a “temporary truce.” Keep hypocrisy to yourself," he added.
