Beaver Preparations for Winter - UPDATE October 19, 2020
19 October 2020

New Beaver Lodge on 10-4-20
New beaver lodge on 10/4/20
Beaver lodge finished on 10-19-20
New beaver lodge finished on 10/19/20

On this 31?F day with no wind, it was time for Donna and me to paddle across the lake to see how the beavers were progressing in their preparations for winter. We especially wanted to see how they were coming on their new lodge that we had checked 15 days ago. At that time, it was a lot of bare sticks piled on the beginnings of a lodge against the shoreline with some of the mudding done. Today, it had a whole different look . The sticks are sealed in place with a lot of insulative mud and aquatic vegetation place between them and on them. Their new lodge of 2020 has the finished look we expect this time of year.

New Beaver Lodge with Food Cache

They had also greatly expanded their winter food cache that is made up of aspen, birch, and shrubs (alder and willow?). The freshly cut end of an aspen sapling that was sticking out toward the camera shows their tooth marks.

Throughout the winter, the beavers will swim out underwater, nip off branches, bring them inside, and ingest the thin bark and underlying cambium?but not the wood. Microorganisms in their intestines digest only about 30% of the cambium?s cellulose on the first go-round, so they eat their fecal pellets and extract more nutrients by running them through again.

Beaver Lodge of 1977

We then paddled less than a hundred yards up the shoreline to see what they might be doing with their 43-year-old lodge that was built back in 1977. They had created paths in the snow as they headed up to the top to focus their attention on the vent hole. I didn?t want to step on the lodge, so I didn?t learn what they exactly were doing. There was no winter food cache, so they are not planning on spending a lot of time in this lodge.

The lodge also had a set of mink tracks in the snow, so I began putting out bologna, hoping to see minks that I recognize. I?m not expecting to see gray foxes this winter as enriched a couple of recent winters. I don?t know what happened to them. Before 2007, I never saw any?only red foxes. Then we saw about equal numbers of reds and grays for a decade?and suddenly no grays.

After several years of seeing woodchucks raising young in burrows under the buildings here, I haven?t seen any for several months now. Things mysteriously change, leaving me wondering with no clues.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- don't know the temp but the snow on the mums that were in the picture i posted yesterday hasn't melted. Just saw the 10 day forecast and it is definitely going towards cold weather with some flurries next week. There will be a brief 70 on Thursday then mostly 40's.

Really liked watching "Thursday" night football at 4 PM on a Monday. The Chiefs looked good. Do they have a lot of injured players cal? It made me cold watching it though- so wet and then the rain got harder.

ra- i have never heard anyone having a crack in their toilet tank.  Only you! lol  We like to stay home too especially now. I am pleased that we were able to travel to Colorado and back safely. We took precautions- took most of our food. While hubby payed for gas at the pump i went in and got coffee- can't do without that! We walked at rest areas and used their restrooms but kept hand sanitizer in the van and used it when we got back in.  The motel we stayed in was a small locally owned facility that we stayed in once before- very clean!

We got an e-mail from our bil in the nursing home in town here. One of the staff tested positive for Covid yesterday. She served my bil and sil their breakfast that morning. They are in quarantine. Yeesh!

Have a great day jewelies!

Bear in White Pine - WRI File Photo
Bear in White Pine - WRI File Photo

About noon, reporter Lila Seidman from the Los Angeles Times called asking the meaning of vocalizations by a mature male black bear up a tree in Yosemite National Park. They were short moans of fear. The bear was scared. Later she sent me the online piece she wrote that included a video of the bear with sound. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-10-20/bear-singing-in-tree-yosemite-national-park-video I?m always glad to be asked about things like this because harmless sounds are often misinterpreted.

Tomorrow at 7:30 PM Bear Time (CT), Doug Hajicek is giving me an opportunity to talk about bears for an hour and a half as part of a new talk show series on Untold Radio. It?s a little scary to think of talking that long, but one of the hosts is Doug Hajicek who has always been a good interviewer with me. We go way back. Some 20 years ago, he filmed and produced the documentary ?The Man Who Walks with Bears? that first aired on Animal Planet on March 1, 2001. I?m counting on him to keep it lively.

He emailed me that they will send us a link to the interview that we can post immediately after the show. I won?t be doing an update tomorrow, but we will revise this update with the link so check back tomorrow. We will also post it on the Lily the Black Bear Facebook page and our Twitter feed.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 35 here 51 in the barn 5 raccoonies 2 little ones also. i went to read about that bear in that link but have to turn off my ad blocker and i dont do that. so hope that bear was not picked on or harmed. some people so easy to be afraid do harm but some are not afraid. sister is here i have not seen her yet i was asleep when her and jim got back well penny heard them barked very loud and  i heard that. someone chewed up something that was plastic dark blue not sure what that was. penny been digging very badly in the dogs yard so i may have to look online and get another tone vibrate shock collar. the girls tore up the last ones.  :(

Good morning everyone- i did sleep in but Izzy still wants her lap time. I can put the laptop down by my knees so i can still read but typing is not possible. lol  Foggy morning here and i think i'd best get my outside stuff done this morning. Looks like we may get a bit of rain tonight - warm tomorrow then colder.

I checked on Ted and it's snowing up there again.  Bears sure are smart- sleeping through the no food season.  I liked the report that told of the meaning of the vocalizations. Smart reporter to know enough to call Dr. Rogers! I'll not be up late enough to hear his broadcast tonight with Doug Hajicek but will catch it later.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- 45 here and raining; looks pretty damp out. Today will be the last of the 60's as we have snow in the forecast next week too.

Yesterday i was determined to finish the hostas in the barn garden. It took all morning but i got it done- pick up loaded and dumped in compost area. Some day i'm going to count how many hosta i have. Was going to do it yesterday but didn't get it done. Cut back a bunch of other stuff so the barn garden is about done.

Hubby has engine put back together and now he says is the hard part- getting it back in the car.  I've watched them do it on the tv car shows and it only takes 30 minutes tops. What is his problem! lol

I'll listen to Dr. Rogers later too- love seeing Ted and his pile of straw. Hardly room for him now but he get right and cozy.
cal- can pearl tell the difference between fresh and baled alfalfa. She does have a sensitive palate!

Time for my breakfast and Izzy's second breakfast. Sil to oncologist for her 3 month post chemo check up. She sure seems to be doing well.
Have a great day jewelies!
