by Heather -  Whooping Crane female  #2-15 disrupted many of the flights last fall with her aggressive behavior until the pilots decided to crate her before the flights.  This allowed them to fly the other 5 cranes to the next stop.

She left St. Marks on March 22nd with 4 older Whooping cranes. Somewhere along the way, her independent streak kicked in and she?s now traveling solo.  She arrived at Jasper County, Indiana March 30th. As of April  15 she?s in Boone County, Illinois.

The Crane Foundation captured a 5 yr old male whooping crane #16-11 and relocated him to Necedah NWR.  Crane 16 is the bird that sired Whoopsie, a hybrid Whoophill in 2015 after pairing with a female Sandhill.

Whooping crane 10-15 is in Green Lake County, Wisconsin!
It appears she (and very likely the other 4 she traveled from Florida with) roosted approximately 5 miles from their former pensite last night!  Hopefully, tomorrow morning I?ll receive a satellite hit for 2-15 so we can include her in the list of official returnees.

The following is copied from Forum's "Birds in the News" thread where T40cfr403 posted yesterday the news of the shooting and killing of two Whooping Cranes in Texas.
T40's post can be found in that thread at:

Below is a quote of T40's post along with my reply posted in that same thread.

T40, I hope you don't mind that I'm going to share this post of yours in the Forum's thread for the Operation Migration Whooping Cranes.  I am beyond angry about this!  I don't care how young this person is who shot and killed these 2 Whooping Cranes, he better get an active prison term out of it as far as I'm concerned... The story says the max he can get is 6 months, and I hope he gets sentenced to a good portion of that, and has to serve it.  Someone has to start having the guts to enforce such laws!  What good are these laws without enforcement?

T40, thank you for the follow-up story.  I look forward to learning what the judge decides for the fine/sentence/probation.  I was pleased to read that a large group showed up for that hearing.
