This is not what you think (maybe) we have all seen the classic swoop and snatch images of Bald Eagles grabbing fish. (Incredible as it is) This eagle was on our boat munching on a chunk of cod-fish he pulled out of our fish net. As he rose to take off I thought he would swoop up and away, but instead he came down along side the boat and close to me. He needed to wash his talons off. My camera was not fast enough to get any other shots (in my surprise). He flew along for second, dipping and shaking his feet, then lifted off still shaking off the drops....Please share if you like!

If You Accidentally Break the Law, Are You a Criminal?

This article is about criminal intent and irrelevant to the story they cite about a rescued woodpecker. All states need Good Samaritan laws to protect wildlife rescuers against criminal prosecution under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. I'm not too sure this woodpecker rescuer meets the necessary criteria though - she took the bird shopping and never called a rehabber for advice.

Update: Dead hawks at Orangeburg plantation prompt federal charges. Evidently, this has happened before and by agents tasked to defend the hawks! Turns out they were killing hawks to protect quail hunting!

Thanks, T40.  I haven't read the first link you posted here yet, but I did read the 2nd one, and it is interesting that one of the theories (just a theory, mind you) about why the GBH population has declined so dramatically along the Maine coast is the possibility of predation by Bald Eagles.  I would wonder then if there was a large increase in the population of the GBH there back when the Bald Eagle population declined so dramatically due to the results of pesticide use.  We know the Bald Eagle population is rising dramatically in many places recently as it has so successfully rebounded from near extinction.  I would think there would be a change in the eco-balancing from that increase in raptor population.  Just thinking out loud.  LOL...  :D
