Jocelyn Pride named 2015 Travel Photographer of the Year by the Australian Society of Travel Writers.

Flyaway was taken in Alaska?s Inside Passage and also published in Luxury Travel.

?We were in a small boat and I watched this bald eagle sitting in the treetops for what seemed like hours,? Pride says.

?As I was on the long end of my lens, my camera was getting heavier by the minute. A clue when eagles are about to take flight is that they poop. Patience was eventually rewarded as the eagle pooped then flew right past the boat. He was definitely on a mission and so was I ? motor winder on overdrive as I held my breath to keep the camera steady.

?I love this photo because, as the symbol of America, this eagle represents strength, power and determination. The way the light caught the end of the feathers was a bonus.?

Michigan eagle hit by a truck in July is on the mend. The rehab center could use donations to purchase fish for him. Cute description of the eagle's reaction to being fed.   :)

First, there was this story from August 2015 that highlighted the discovery of the first bald eagle's nest in an Indiana state park. So far so good, as long as you ignore the park's naturalist calling eagles "cowards" when confronted by human activity.  ???

http://www.fox28.com/story/29746149/2015/08/09/fox28

And now this! The state is going to build a resort in the park, just a mile from the only bald eagle nest.  The DNR is fully on board with this idea and makes a ridiculous statement that "federal regulations mandate builders to keep construction sites at least 330 ft. away from eagle nests," so everything should be OK. Yeah, right. Poor eagles. They just bought their dream home and will now have to put up with bulldozers and then tourists. Or NOT! Habitat, people!  >:(

And in a much more eagle-friendly part of Indiana, there's this very familiar story of an eagle nest being destroyed by a storm. Make sure you click on the photo to see a few more - looks eerily like the N2 scene!!! One surprising fact was that the single fledgling from that nest was seen in the area after the storm! Everyone was worried about it. Must be a homebody to have stayed so close to home so far. LOL!

Turkey vultures are getting a bad rap, as usual.  Geez, where in this story did the "journalists" ask anyone who might know anything about TVs what they were doing in the area?  It's either migration or food supply or both.  Maybe this town has a problem only the TVs know about!

A surprise inspection of a CITCO open-air oil/water separator resulted in convictions for Clean Air Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act violations.  This case has been in the courts since at least 2007 and a Texas circuit court just tossed out the convictions, the appeals and the fines.  http://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=f70dac63-e664-4103-a0fe-201c53e04755

Among the bird remains discovered were five White Pelicans, twenty (regular old) Ducks, two Northern Shoveler Ducks, four Double Crested Cormorants, one Lesser Scaup Duck, one Black-Bellied Whistling Tree Duck, one Blue-Winged Teal Duck, and one Fulvous Whistling Tree Duck.  In some circuit courts, this "take" is deemed a crime because it's a unlawful killing regardless of the cause.  But in this court and others, it's not considered a "take" because it wasn't intentional, like hunting.  IMO, this is a willfully ignorant interpretation of the Act and would decriminalize all such killings by a lawful commercial operation, like a wind farm.

The "take" issue may eventually have to be resolved by the Supreme Court, which could be years and millions of bird deaths away.  The USFWS is currently working on regulations for "take permits" for a variety of commercial operations (oil retention ponds), possibly including wind turbines and electric distribution and transmission lines.  Take permits allow a very limited number of unintentional killings but require reporting those takings and then mitigating the causes to prevent recurrence.  If the permits become law, the MBTA will finally have teeth and this nonsense will be stopped.

Michigan is doing a really good thing by buying up lake-front habitat. Eagles could be major beneficiaries.

Annual release of California condors into the wild set for September 26, 2015 in Arizona. That would really be something to witness.
