Yikes ....

The "Miracle in Toronto".
The fact that everyone survived this crash is amazing.  :o

18 people total were injured. Mostly with 'minor' injuries.
A man, women and child were in critical last night. but this morning I heard the child was in good condition .. the 2 adults I haven't heard an update on, but are expected to survive.

A lot of the safety experts on the news channels are crediting the quick, calm work of the flight attendants and passengers .. the fact that the fuselage stayed structurally intact .. and that there was no fire/smoke intrusion into the cabin.

One of the main safety improvements that they are crediting with the survival of people on this flight is what they call 16G seats.

kb I never really understood why the NWS chose to place their major weather reporting stations at area airports.
In NYC they use a weather station situated in Central Park that provides readings that are more representative of ones neighborhood.
https://vlab.noaa.gov/web/nws-heritage/-/100-years-of-weather-observations-at-belvedere-castle-in-central-park

I mean I get why you would want a weather station at an airport for flight safety, but the stations are generally situated in rather poor locations at the airports.
They are in wide open areas with no terrain or trees/bushes and usually very little grass even.

The wind that is reported by the station is generally elevated because there is very little 'ground friction' around them.
Direction will be accurate though.

In summer the high temperatures are usually elevated due to all of the blacktop absorbing and holding the heat. Heat island.
And the heat from jet engines.

In winter the low temps are generally reported lower at the airport again due to the open nature of their location and radiational cooling from the area being so flat and wide open.
And there are (in northern climes) usually piles/berms of snow on the sides of the runways.

Rain, snow, humidity, etc instrument readings/measurements are usually pretty good or better in an open area however.
My 2cents.  ;)

Trying to, BAZ...  8)

Today, I made peanut butter protein cookies, lemon cream cheese crescent rolls, and white chicken chili. This batch has chopped onion, garlic, cumin, ginger, tumeric, chili pepper, carrots, pulled chicken, white beans, cream of chicken with rice, cream of bacon, cream of jalapeno soups and some cream cheese. I may add some chopped spinach to my bowl.

CLYNN   You certainly did oversleep!  LOL  Wondered where you were when we usually are typing at the same time  ;D
We were a lot colder than many usual cold spots in the world today - Juneau was at 43

TIG   Briefly saw some of the video now coming through from those on the plane taking videos of folks hanging upside down. :o
Wow  that is some chili  LOL

PHYL   Enjoyed your AM selections of our antlered friends. Like that last one with the lone deer on the trail.    365 -loved the frogs eager for some lovin'  LOL

LISA   Cute mugs.  Tomorrow your service should be up and running . ;D

BL    thanks for the info on the 16G seats.  Every little bit helps.  Even tho I am only a few miles east of O'Hare I'm never what they record.  You pointed out some very interesting reasons for the discrepancy however.

LANI    Awww  That baby sloth reunited with Mom.   :-*   Heartwarming.        Boris feeding himself  LOLOL

Life is interesting and varied.  In this area the local stations give 3 locations, all different, O'Hare, Midway, Loop.  Then there's tsk and me; we're always different; both west of Chi, she's NW and I
m SW, and we're about 15 miles apart.   I came across a channel on computer called Wunderground locally.  Always wondered if it was national.  Anybody else have it?  Wunder has several local tiny areas, must be 30-40 in the area, I found mine which is in a local fire station about a mile away.  Can't get any closer than that.  Local terrain and things like the lake, buildings, green spaces add to the difference.  I also found it advantageous to look out the window   ::)  or the moving radar screen on Wunderground.   ;D
