With no water pressure for 3 days, the health dept. forced a boil order - this a a mobile home court of about 400 units.

Here's an example of some of what I've been assisting with on the post fire Structure Damage Assessment mapping of things.
Note the definition of a structure could be any building, a fence, a shed, a utility pole or a car even .. etc.

Quote
In terms of wildfire damage, "structures" refer to any built building or fixed installation that can be impacted by a wildfire, including houses, sheds, garages, barns, outbuildings, utility poles, fences, and even certain infrastructure like bridges, depending on the context; essentially, anything that is not naturally occurring vegetation and can be physically damaged by fire.

The image below is a small snippet of a random neighborhood within the Palisades Fire Perimeter.

The damage to 'structures' are so hit or miss it's astonishing.
The whole area is a stew of noxious toxic hazardous materials in the soil and especially in the air.
Apocalyptic on the ground is not a stretch of a definition at all.

With winds howling and swirling through hyper local terrain and ground cover like they have there and the embers being cast in all those directions it was impossible to determine until after the fire by physical inspection what made it and what didn't.

I'm heading back to NJ tomorrow evening to tend to other stuff Pip & I have on our plate.
Whats today whats tomorrow ? Friday 01/24/25.
When did I get here One year ago on 01/13/25.
7 days after the conflagration began.
I want to see clean white snow don't you know.
Besides Tank returned & said get the hell out of my house and when Tank says's go home one does.

You look like 10 lbs of shit in a 1 lbs bag BL.
Man my big brother from another mother it's hell on scorched earth over there.
U & I have been in the shit before together, but these days here ain't going to help with my PTSD.
You need an adult beverage my friend, lets go down on the beach and tip a few.

I'm officially linked into the data I need from LA County to continue with it back home.
PS _ Lani I'm not really volunteering on this one.
I'm being appropriately compensated by the USFS.

The Hughes fire as fast as it took off got stomped on pretty good by all the assets in the area.
Haven't really drilled in on it's stats as of yet.

Whiskey Neat deep with a 6 pack chaser my dear fair haired viking friend I'm off the clock ..

No fires on the beach here this eve.
Such great positive attitude people I've interacted with throughout.
Morale, Water, Food, Shelter, Sleep and Equipment is the recipe.
As weather sniffing old salty dogs Tank and I sensed a whiff of salt on the slight inshore flow.  Moisture ?

Some burnt to the ground life guard stations "buildings really" directly on and in the middle of the sand next to us.
Surreal and absolutely unbelievable as the sun sizzles into the Pacific. If that's what it's still called.
Hundreds of yards from the nearest combustible vegetation on the ocean wet side sand to the west (south here) of the PCH kb.

Down sloping Hurricane Force wind forced embers like a blow torch. :o

BL - I can smell the salt water from here deep in the tundra of Minnesota!...thanks.

ha, also reminds me Scott developed such a distaste for that smell....being and serving in the Navy and all.
Fresh water was his desired smell.

I see rain in the forecast for Los Angeles this weekend!..wonder what smell that rain will turn the apocalyptic structures into.

kb if I get diverted to MSP from CA back to NJ because of some weenie southerners.
I'm going to leave a 3/4 full 1 quart Nalgene bottle of Pacific ocean water on your stoop.
You'll have to stir the salt.   :-*

If the nalgene smells like smoke that's the one.

 ;) good one!

clynn, Love your morning posts, beautiful pink... I can't believe the snow pics from NO and Pensacola!

Kb, awww sweet cubs... I hope it's not a heavy rain over LA.

Tsk, I'll post the Sloth graduations Saturday. I have meetings starting early in the morning. It's so cold, I just want to stay home.... prayers for you and Tim.... Do they set out heaters for bee hives?

Lisa, WOW! 6" in Mobile. My sister from Hawaii called me today. She said it was 54 in Mililani (home)... She was sitting on her couch with an electric blanket. They don't have heating in their homes.

Hi Tig, Puff,

Karen, that's a pretty pic of downtown of downtown Valdosta. (I just read that in your post to Lisa  ;D ... Poor Piper. Do you put a sweater on her?

BL, what a difference with the before/after pics of the snow covering the middle of the gulf coast.... glad your getting some compensation. But, thanks for all you are doing. I bet they will miss you. Tank may not, but I bet those you assisted will miss you.
Safe travels home.

Oldguy, sorry about the water. Prayers for your MIL and water situation. :(

Lani I'm going to frame Sara's bandanna because it is exemplary.

If you have ever jumped out of a perfectly good aircraft into to a shit storm hell fire fight that was not in your own neck of the forest you're aces by me.

I just witnessed heroism by the survivors and volunteers that shames our efforts.

BL   Thanks for that summary of what you have been doing.   How can you tell what everything is and to what % the damage is?
Safe trip home.

Good Morning Beakers!

I've always measured my age by miles behind my belt.
BL, then you must be about a million years old... The sights you have seen, both Wonderful Nature and Nature's Fury would sure fill a very large book full of tales! I would frame that bandana too, and in my will leave it to the 2025 LA Fires Memorial. Very interesting, the map showing the condition of each house or building.

Lani, I also pray for a slow, soft long-lasting rain for the LA area. No mudslides needed right now. Sad about Waylon, thanks for posting the words from TRR. Rescuing wild critters is a heart wrenching job I am sure. They do their very best to save everyone but it's not meant to be. I get the same feeling from Wild Heart Ranch, and even from
the Bear Center. I couldn't do it.

oldguy, well, I know of 2 of us that are the same age, maybe you know one other as well as yourself! 1952?

tsk, I had to chuckle, Tim has a flip phone and would live in a cave it that were an option. ::) Mom had a flip phone, but we all talked her into getting a smart phone. She never uses it. Too complicated for her. We need to get her a Jitterbug I think, they have a flip phone! Ed would live in a cave, The Mole Hole is kind of like a cave...

Lisa, your brother and a zillion others are not enjoying the snow but I bet the kids are!  I bet most of the cities/towns were paralyzed!

baz, where are you???  It's been over a week!  Hope all is okay...

karen, beautiful Valdosta courthouse! Looks pretty with snow! Everything looks pretty in snow!

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away. ~ Unknown

Lol!  That squirrel is a riot!    Good Morning!    Pipers  bathroon is still icy but perhaps this afternoon will make  a big dent in the  icy mess!   I have not seen a squirrel since the snow started!
Bl, think you said you would continue  your work   From NJ!    Technology is great!
Lani, 54 is cold when you are not used to it!  Keep my house at 72>.  She needs a portable heater to move around with her!
The Courthouse is pretty all the time!  There are so many of these across our country!
There is a. Small town, east of here that has murals on many walks dipucting life there, including folks that lived there.   Almost no solid, blank walls.
I loved my flip phone!  Jitterbugs are good but you cannot replace the batteries.  There are new flip phones now that are very pricey!  They have wonderful features!
