Oldguy, thanks for the videos. I loved seeing the 25 forgotten vegetables grown during the depression! There were a few I didn't know about.

While I was watching OG's vegetable video, I saw this video off to the side and decided to watch it. I think there are some Beakers who might enjoy seeing this, too. It's 17 minutes long - skip the 2 or 3 ads that are embedded, so you can see the great ending! I think there might be a couple of Beakers (Tig, maybe?), or their other half/hubbies (Clynn's Ed and Bella perhaps?), who might want to try this experiment at the right time of year. Enjoy!

The one thing I disagreed with the guy in the video, is his planting an entire potato.
My Dad's sister lived near Stevens Point Wis.  This is potato farming land.  He learned how the farmers planted them.  He planted enough potatoes every spring to last all year, using some of the previous harvest for the next.  He said that what was planted should not have more than 4 eyes per piece of potato - and at least 1 ft. between.  This was to promote larger potatoes and more quantity per mound.  This same concept is used today when planting crops - crops need space to grow to full potential - too close together reduces yield/distance - too far away also reduces yield/acre.  He was a farmer during the Depression with 4 children born before the end of depression in 1941.  Most of the plants in that video have not been promoted for use since the 1950s, when the economy was strong, except in some very poor areas of the US.
On subject of butter/margarine - our family were dairy farmers - we could by butter from the truck that picked up our milk at about half the cost of the store - place the order with the driver on his stop one day and get the butter on his next stop back.  I was in my teens before I knew about margarine, which in Iowa you could buy it pre-colored by then.(but not in Wis.)  ;)

CLYNN   Got to 68 here but the record for this date was 70  :(    Lulu was out on the porch several times today getting reacquainted with her tower out there  LOL  It was always a question about how Wisconsin allowed oleo...being the dairy state.  :-\   Right place at the right time for that robin  ;D

LANI   Took me two tries to find the little buddy to royal baby  LOL   Cruise ship a nice touch to that magnificent view  ;D   That's a good perspective on the nests in the area. Camera placement too.   Interesting lunchroom story from your past  :-*

PHYL   I was fascinated with the potato growing.  That would be fun to do!!!   You have to have a lot of time to do those projects - regrowing store veggies.

BAZI    LOLOL  Rewrapping the margarine in butter papers   ;D ;D   Love your story telling today  ;D

OLDGUY   I have a friend who lives right near Stevens Point and when a bit younger she was hired with many to harvest potatoes  LOL

LISA just texted me as I was typing and here is what she wanted me to post  " I made it to Mobile  for the night and I will be heading to Savannah tomorrow and be back home Wednesday evening.  Hope all is good with you!  Miss you."

LisaG If you happen to peak in here this evening the weather along your route looks "clean & green" tomorrow and Wednesday.

There could be some dense fog tomorrow AM in southern GA so be aware of that.
Safe travels and watch out for the flying bleach.   :-*

Lol. Stevens point I think on route 51 and ATown wings pass through every year going to Land O Lakes and coming back home. I always like that place and never knew they grew potatoes. I did question planting the whole potatoes though as I always thought the ice created the plants, and somehow knew that when you planted potatoes, she used the seed potatoes, which were pieces of a potato why did I say?
Best I am interested that you identifies the breaded potatoes bread  tomatoes and stewed tomatoes I dish I had as a child as well and I really enjoyed it but I’ve never made it myself. My mother did a great job of it and I found it tasty. My father was a person who ate bread butter with sugar on it, and I have had a piece or two in my life and found a pretty good having a family from Wisconsin. We did not eat olio or margarine at home as my father would only eat butter there was no fooling him wrapping anything in paper, I did have an uncle who did not like leg of lamb and my mother served it at a dinner he attended. I was warned not to mention it, and was amazed when he kept asking for more and more pieces of meat. He finally asked my mother what is this, and she replied roast. Don’t think he ever knew what he was eating. The depression Years were very rough and almost everyone and we’re followed by rationing of World War II. What a Time to live through.
I am a rutabaga lover, but I find it’s very difficult to find in the south. Maybe it comes frozen I haven’t looked. It’s particularly good in Stew.  as our parsnips also like turnips oh well, I’ve just eaten a whole handful of grapes and take it’s time for piper and I to go to bed. Well it’s good you’re back home and old guy. It’s good to keep us on track of what’s true or not true and some of the videos I to heard about olio as a teenager and came home asking my mother to buy some because I wanted to pick squish that red button in the package to make that white stuff turn. Yellow., After quite a while, she finally bought one for me to play with and after tasting it I kind of wished I had kept quiet as I think butter is better. I also like the higher fat content in Wisconsin ice cream. I’m not sure they still do that, but it was delicious.
Have a good evening, bakers, and clynn, Stay in the pink pill don’t get to blue. I’ve had a hummingbird feeder up for over a week and I’m not sure I’ve seen any plumbers there, but thought I did prior to putting it up time will tell!   Lani, A peanut butter sandwich is not too bad, but I can’t stand spam.  SEDS

Good Morning Beakers!

Lani, beautiful picture of the eagle landing! I couldn't open the link but I am sure the landing was smooth! Thank you for the Albie report and updates, I love the view they have from their nests! Nice that Mike gets to work from home this week!

karen, we never had butter when I was a kid, just oleo. Mom still calls it oleo even though it was later margarine. Now you can't even find margarine, it's all vegetable oil spread. Fleischmann's used to be real margarine but no more. We use butter, and crazy enough, Mom uses butter now! Margarine on hand for baking, and she keeps a small can of Crisco for baking. Grandparents always had a huge garden, they had to get through to the next season. Two deep freezers in the basement and many canning jars full by the end of the summer. Grandpa always bought seeding potatoes to plant. Being a housewife in those days was a lot of work!

tsk, it got to 78 here yesterday, I had the deck door open all day, the cats were thrilled! Lots of bird and squirrel action! Thanks for the message from Lisa!

oldguy, my Grandparents had to have a big garden during the Depression, with 4 kids! Grandpa worked as a farm hand until he finally got on at Snap-On Tools. I can't remember the name of the place where he got all of the seeds for the garden, but I remember the seeds were in wooden bins and sold by the pound. Fence went up for the peas to climb, poles up for the green beans (pole beans), mounds were the potato row. We always got to help pick. Snapped green beans, shucked peas while watching cartoons. They lived in the country, had a cow for milk/butter, raised chickens for eggs and to eat/sell, and had pigs for meat. I never realized as a kid that they were poor...

baz, we didn't go to the lake Sunday, but are going to go the next nice day! None of you are going to convince me that breaded tomatoes are righteous! LOLOL!  It would be like trying to convince Erin to eat Brussels sprouts! Yes, there were very lean years in our parent's and Grandparents times. You just don't see it as a kid. Mom was the oldest , she married my Dad and started her military life. The other 2 sisters married farmers and both worked very hard through those lean times.  Love the relaxing frog!

Lisa, have a safe trip home!

Crazy Horse Memorial - Crazy Horse's Left Arm, outstretched into the distance, has been steadily taking shape. On the original Sculpture created by Korczak Ziolkowski, Crazy Horse's Right Arm rests at his side. As you can see in this #MountainMonday image, Carvers have been removing granite in the area where his Right Shoulder will emerge from the granite in the future.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away. ~ Unknown

KAREN  Funny note last night  LOLOL

LANI   Wasn't able to open that link last night.  :(

CLYNN  Again I will say you have some amazing openers for the day.   ;D  Mom switched to butter in their later years.  I don't use margarine at all any more even to bake.  Tried a new chocolate chip cookie recipe yesterday that uses only brown sugar and no white sugar.  Much better taste to me.   Great story about your grandparents.  Life was so much harder then but they didn't know that  LOL    Those who have worked on that amazing Crazy Horse Monument will never see then completion which is kind of sad.

Off at 9 AM for Tim's trigger finger surgery.  I think this is the 2nd or third.  Different rules when on Ozempic.  Have to stop it and then fast for 24 hours before the surgery.  I still don't understand the reason for that.

Good Morning!
Love the bright colors this morning and guess that Lisa is heading east end of the sun and I 10. It is a bright sunny day and she will be in at all the way to Jacksonville at which point she turns north towards .Savannah! Be safe speeding along this fast stretch of your trip, Lisa. Next you get into the traffic on I 95 and then home to Jeff in the B&B and Misty and bandit.
Cool morning here but he is expected in the 70s with a flood alert.   There is only a small puddle in my backyard, and it will sink in before mosquito season sets in. Baz, do you think I need to get some malaria preventative pills? Lol I think I have a hummingbird here already and they are pretty good bug eaters. I haven’t seen it except I think once but put food out in the event that it is hanging around I have seen the little house finches a few times but I’m not sure what they’re doing as they don’t appear to be sitting on the nest, so I guess he has no eggs yet.

You ladies are right life in the 30s 40s and even the 50s was not easy for housewives when I think of the conveniences today it is amazing how our parents were able to manage. I’m just glad I don’t have to do it including that part about hanging the clothes out on the line and taking them all in and folding them and then making up the beds hanging those sheets with something.
Tsk, When you talk to the computer instead of writing, there is no such thing as punctuation.   So just go ahead and put periods commas in?’s wherever you think they should be. Lolol!   The later in the day It gets the worse my eyes become, and I don’t read what’s being typed!
Enjoy the day bakers, and take time to smell the flowers. Oh Phyl, I love the sound of the ice melting and blowing around on the trees in this morning’s 365. That sounds great. Thanks for posting.

Good morning Beakers!
Hello Eagles4, Lisa, Ezee, Eburg, Weasel, Jilltosa, Kb, Tsk, Karen, Oldguy, Puff, Eaglesrock, Emyrauld, Lilbro, Blschue, Lori, Clynn, Tig, Baz, Phyl, Peep, Jaspurr, Pink, BL, Bggolden, T40, ssrl, Maxie, Nrstooge, Paulie, jicaji, LB, and All!

Clynn, Love your morning posts, the marigolds are my favorite to plant as they last from spring thru fall... The video link was of a father lion loving/playing with his young cub as the sun was going down.... stunning photos of Crazy Horse monument.

Baz, great garden video. I've subscribed to the channel.... my childhood with my mother/stepfather may have been lean and difficult years, but I remember those and my early years with my grandparents with love and reverence.... no regrets/wouldn't have wanted my path towards Mike to be any different.  :) ... I looked up Rutabaga, because I was sure my MIL made that, and she did, she made it in a creamy dish, which I liked. Any veg that she thought I wouldn't try, she made it creamy. LOL! I hated lima beans and brussel sprouts. I still won't eat lima beans creamy or not, but I do love pickled brussel sprouts. Which is a midwest thing, farmers loved it with their midday lunch during harvesting...Mike's grandmother pickled them, along with watermelon, etc. I miss her, she was a hoot! So many cherished memories of her and my dear MIL.  ;D ... Mike thinks KU will make the big dance... but who knows. What a terrible year. I don't know if you had any thoughts about the new system of using the Portal to get new players. For me, I think it hasn't helped to create a feeling of being part of a team. KU use to be all about being part of a team, with the point guard being the central player to blend and hold the players together... from last year to this year this team has just not bonded...  :-\  And I miss not being part of a smaller conference. BIG 8 was fantastic, fun, you knew the coaches, schools.... it's not the same... I know, I'm old school  ;D

Tig, I'm sorry RIP officer Reilly.

Tsk, I look forward to seeing which way SSTrig will go when she's able to go visiting other nests... the link was from an X account. video of Father Lion protecting and loving on his cub as the sun was setting.... good wishes and prayers for Tim's surgery.

Karen, I love peanut butter/butter sandwiches to this day. I treat myself maybe a couple times in a year. Mike loves peanut butter/jelly sandwiches/celery sticks we always have a jar of Skippy's handy. Love your posts, no matter what time of day.  ;D

Phyl, darling pics... thank you for today's nature video... only a couple of the movies I didn't see. I love Henry Fonda as Abe Lincoln, that's a classic.

Oldguy, that's cool how you got your butter when you were growing up!  :) Our margarine was pre-colored, too, when I was a kid growing up in NC. On the whole potato remarks... The planting methods you talk about are similar to the ones my in-laws used as well. I think the person in that video said that was a method he was doing, to show the possible kind of yield he could get by using only a small patio space and a small "throw-away" box leftover from an amazon delivery as the planting container. He was emphasizing how people who say they don't have space for a garden, or can't afford the planters for container gardeneing, could use other ways they may already have, at a very low cost, such as a "free" leftover small cardboard box, and a small patio space, and still find a way to produce some decent yield. As he dug out the resulting potato harvest from that cardboard box, he commented several times how he got more and better yield than he had expected. I don't think he would've used those methods if he were planting rows in a larger farming space.

I thought it was a fun experiment, and one that some people might enjoy trying.

PHYL   Some thought provoking pics this AM  ;)   Enjoyed frozen morning 365

KAREN  You are so funny.  I love guessing what word you said as the computer doesn't always get it right.  This AM was so funny  "hummers" came out as "plumbers" to the feeder  LOLOL  I'm still laughing.   " Bakers" of course is "Beakers"  but many of us are bakers so it works!!!  I'm so grateful that you are here and share such wonderful stories with us no matter how they get to the page.
:-* :-* :-*   PS  My Mom hung out clothes almost til the day she died.  My SIL Barb always hangs out her washed sheets as she loves the smell of them on the bed.

LANI   Day nurse Puma   :-*     I always have a pot of marigolds on my patio - last til the snow comes!   I have peanut butter 5 of 7 days a week as a rule - spread on club crackers with a bit of cheese on the top.  or pb spread on a toasted English muffin topped with jelly and banana slices  ;D

BAZI   I too thought it was a good experiment for kids in school - manageable and educational.
