Good Morning Beakers!

oldguy, love the Pretend Fall! Very interesting trail am footage! That deer was bound and determined to destroy that trail cam! Wow!

baz, hope you are safe and sound this morning. And dry.

karen, the radar looks like a mess for you, hope you and Piper are battened down and that your trees hold. I bet you are without power. Kay's sister Debbie lives in O'Brien FLA, near the FL/GA border. I am sure Debbie is getting pummeled by Debby. Take care, I know you know what to do! I just worry that you southern folks have no basements to retreat to ....

Lani, love that slightly different view of the Hellgate nest! I think Dr. Greene is as thrilled as everyone else is for Iris and Fill and the kids! I bet there will be wonderful pictures coming!

BL, good idea to finish the season with the window a/c unit, especially if the furnace is still fine (which you will find out about in a few months!)

Upper Iowa River yesterday near Bluffton, Iowa

Monday’s Maze
Monday’s mist confuses my mind,
The darkness falls, the city’s grind,
I search for meaning in the haze,
Night’s silence taunts me with its daze.
Can I find my way, or lose myself too?
Through the city’s maze, who can I pursue?
Caffeine’s rush tries to boost my stride,
But doubts creep, and morning’s light hides.
Can I find my footing, or slip away?
In Monday’s maze, a brand new day.

Good Morning Everyone.   Happy Monday, Y'all...!

Good Morning!  Still have power!  Wind picking up!  The sound of pine cones hitting the house is unnerving!   Rain starting to flood the yard and a need for lights in the house!  Weather channel mentioning Valdosta !  Piper refused to go out! Going to charge my floor cleaner!   Wish I could send some rain to the fire ares!

Hi everyone!
Woo hoo - a huge day!  Sum-eh made her first flight today from the nest to the perch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1dkFhHS67I

Once she got that out of the way, she has made several longer forays, flying for extended periods and then returning to the nest.  It is an east wind this morning, so she is taking off into the east wind (to the right), and then also flying into the wind to land (so she lands coming in from the left).
Sum-eh will spend more time flying around, usually pretty close to the nest.  She will return, especially when Finnegan comes in with a fish!
As a pilot, I vividly remember the excitement of my first solo flight, and it is exciting that Sum-eh has "earned her wings."  This is a huge milestone for the Hellgate family.
Here is a video of Sum-eh's first flight to the perch.

Karen, yay! Hope you still have power now, too! Weather Channel has a meteorologist reporting live from Valdosta and interviewing someone from the town, who says most everything in Valdosta is closed. Maybe you can watch those live reports from Valdosta on your TV. You and Piper stay high and dry. Fingers crossed your trees stay standing and you don’t lose power!

Lani, yay for Sum-eh’s exciting fledge and successful flights to and from the nest!  :-* Great pics and report! Thanks for sharing that wonderful news. Iris and Finn must have big grins - especially Iris!!  :) :-* All good at my place. Debby won’t have much big effect here till maybe Thursday/Friday. Maybe. LOL, she’s going to keep everyone guessing for a while.

Lisa and BL, you’re back in the cone. Again. For now. Heavy rain may come your way. Stay tuned for updates. Who knows, really, at this point, zackly when.  ::)

Clynn, all good here!

TSK, fingers crossed for your family’s Florida properties to make it through okay. Nerve wracking!

Lator, Gators:)

Fourth in  'The Most  Colorful Birds on Earth"...

Lilac-breasted roller

The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) gets its name from its acrobatic courtship display, which involves males repeatedly rising and plunging down with their wings tucked in to perform rolls while simultaneously shouting raucous calls. Lilac-breasted rollers grow 14.5 inches (37 cm) tall, with both males and females sporting a lilac throat and breast, a turquoise belly, a green head, a reddish-orange face and royal-blue tail tips.

The species lives in grasslands and wooded areas across eastern and southern Africa, from Ethiopia and Angola to northern South Africa. The birds sit on dead trees to survey their surroundings for prey, including grasshoppers, beetles, lizards, frogs and crabs. They are known to pick off animals that are fleeing from bush fires and to invade the nests of other birds, including kingfishers and woodpeckers.
