Howdy Beakers!

Thanks for asking about my knee - it's about the same... not an unusual situation though. It's often "under the weather" since I injured it pretty badly back in 1986. Surgery was discouraged at the time (before arthroscopic procedures were available for that type of injury), but I did get surgery for it 5 years later after arthroscopic surgery options came along. It didn't fix my knee by any means, but it sure helped stabilize it significantly, which was good, because before that surgery, I could suddenly, and without any warning whatsoever, find myself plopped unceremoniously on the ground, wherever I just so happened to be the moment - could be walking down the hall in a business setting, or crossing a 4 lane street on the way into work and hoping not to get hit by a car - that was scary! - during rush hour in the morning, which did happen, and no drivers seemed to be slowing down before I scrambled, crying in pain, to the side of the road... ugh... bleeding, with torn clothes, but grateful to be alive, while the lush sitting on the steps of the big downtown post office was laughing at me as he sipped his beverage from a plain brown paper bag.  So I am grateful not to have to deal with that instability anymore! Going for a short wrapped-knee walk right after I post.  ;) :D

Lisa, the 1st year I declared I wouldn't put up a Christmas tree, my sister and her son sneaked over with a small cut Christmas tree and insisted on putting it up and decorating it. LOL. That fluffy light birthday cake wouldn't have lasted long at my house. Yum! Oh, in my post that went poof a couple of days ago, I answered your question... yes, and thank for asking, my niece and LGN and fam got home from Boston last Wednesday, and my LGN went back to school last Friday. She's doing great!

TSK, good news that Tim's itching is subsiding! Yay for finding the turkey leg, and dressing, too. Sounds yum.

Clynn, what a gorgeous setting for your friend, Wanda, where she lived in the TN mountains. I looked it up, and it is a 28-mile drive from my Mtns Sis's home. I'm sure I've seen that location from afar, too, since I hiked a portion of the AT (Appalachian Trail) all around that Roan Mtn (6,285-ft elevation, about 12 miles from Wanda's) area, and camped near where I enjoyed standing atop a grassy bald with a 360-degree unobstructed view into 3 states - NC, TN, VA - and that would have encompassed looking toward Wanda's pretty area. A beautiful area! You will be able to visit her when you visit your mom - right? - now that she has moved back close to Albion. Maybe you said  you did catch up with her again on your most recent trip?

KB, Ollie rivals Lassie. LOL. Remember when Timmy couldn't come home because he had fallen somewhere, and Lassie ran home and barked at Paul and Ruth and led them to Timmy? Glad you found what Lollie was signaling you about!

Tig, last night I watched the on-court celebration of Rafa's tennis career that was held immediately after he lost at the Davis Cup Final 8 2024... his last professional match. Boo hoo. Glad it could be on his home turf, and so many of his family and friends and others could be there. Most of it was in Spanish, but some was in English. Watching his sister being emotional in the stands about made me cry. I'm sure he will pop up here and there in the pro tennis world - maybe he will coach eventually - but it won't be the same not seeing him play at the French, and the other majors, anymore. I set the DVR to record the Tennis Channel's "Legends" special about him that will air on the 30th. Glad the pool was nice and warm!

Phyl, it seems knees are almost always troublesome after injury. Glad you found at least some helpful relief with your recent gel injections.

Karen, I have discovered that real estate tax listings are public info - usually through the county's government tax site online. That's how I find who owns particular addresses when I have needed to. That ginkgo tree piece I found had incredible info in it!! I noticed its growing zones, too, when I read it. There was so much in that piece... such as, handling the fruit causes a poison-ivy type rash for many people. Yikes! I wouldn't touch it. LOL.

Lani, your Thanksgiving plans sound relaxing and yummy! Glad your part of that fundraiser project is a done deal. Hope it will be sucessful. Smooth travels for Mike!  :)

Puff, if I stood next to the Arctic Ocean, like Ton, I would have to splash my feet in it - just so I could say I was in it. But I wouldn't have lingered. LOL.

BL, looks like some weather forecasters are not placing any bets on accumulation numbers... said it's a tricky forecast in so many places,  due to warm ground, location, etc. LOL, think they've been burned in the past. But you and Pip and Kopje will surely be in the right place if there's a good snowfall around there! Yes, it would be just awful if you all got stuck and had to stay through Thanksgiving!  ;)  ;D  Enjoy!  :D

Later, Gators!  :)

Lani, love Linus and Snoopy!

baz, saw this picture of your boyfriend on FB!  https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/tennis/rafael-nadal-calls-it-an-emotional-day-as-he-loses-in-the-davis-cup-before-retirement/ar-AA1umOSV?ocid=BingNewsSerp

Lisa, did you spend the $300 or just buy the turkey? Sometimes the mood just isn't there. I sometimes would like to pass on the decorating because we are never here for Christmas, but I go ahead and do it for Kelsey and the kids...  I have a turkey breast, around 5 lb I think, and I have a small ham. Got my Stove Top Stuffing, love that stuff! And it doesn't get any easier!! I did go ahead and buy sweet potatoes, will do homemade this year. They were on sale for $.38 a lb. That is cheap, and Kelsey and I love a baked sweet potato with butter and brown sugar!

Phyl, 'the magic bone'! Cute ice cream corn cornucopia with M&Ms, I may try that for the kids! Great pictures of the Norths, thanks for sharing!

tsk, Tim and his turkey legs!

baz, I didn't add all of the pictures of Wanda's house, this one shows where it is on the Appalachian Trail. Yes, we are planning on getting together when I visit Mom in April. She has family in the area and lots of friends that will be glad to have her back!  She was at our 50th Class Reunion in 2021 (our 50th was 2020 but was cancelled due to Covid) the first one she has attended in years!

Good evening, bakers clynn, and baz  I love the pictures of the Tennessee mountains and have driven the three states Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia in that area many times , absolutely spectacular and something about the foliage makes the  area seem soft and enveloping. I hope that any damage that has been done to the areas as soon replaced with new growth, so the bare spots are filled in quickly . I have read that a lot of topsoil has washed away so we’ll have to see what will be growing without it.
I’m  enjoying the discussions of SNL and of course love them as they
started at second city in Chicago in 1959 in the 1600 block North Wells. What a great time it was to be a young adult and have that as your playground..
yes, there is sure a lot of information on the tax records and I did get information on both of my neighbors through property records which are available online. I have talked with both of them at this point and do not believe anything will be done until after the first of the year, as I believe, they both are very short of money date house, which is not directly behind me, but his fence is part of my backyard. Fencing is owned by the widow of an Air Force person, and is not one who talks her son lives there with his wife and two children, and seems to be in charge of the property , I believe what he told me although he stopped talking before he got it all out. Yes that he collected $16,000 for the fence following the first hurricane he obviously spent the money on something besides fencing he is not able to get more  money for the same fence.  The other house is owned by a young woman who grew up in the house and bought it from her father. She not only has fencing but trees to deal with and I don’t believe either were in her plans she’s employed by a bank, so maybe they’ll be kind and give her a small loan  to buy her out  of this mess She said the insurance company is giving her a runnaround about the fencing.   Now, I wait and see.  :-*

I have  two  turkey thighs in the freezer and will buy and a small  pan   of dressing at publixs,  I will look around for other sides and if nothing looks good get a sweet potato.h

Fresh 10 pounder for .christmas.

KB  WOW  that is amazing.  I've never known a "10 yr" battery to last 10 years.  How is Chris doing by the way?  Photo by Mariah looks like a painting.

LISA  I looked up Berry Chantilly cake - It is original to Whole Foods!!!  Their's is the original recipe.  SO...I've been looking for a dessert for my girls party on the 9th!  I ordered one and will pick it up on the 8th - Can't wait to try it.  ;D   We have had our new tree up with the lights on since we bought it and Tim said  " I like it this way "  LOL  But I love ornaments so I will put on a few of my favorites  (like all of them)  NOT

PHYL  " Wish bone"  LOLOL   With the Country Music awards tonight - are you located anywhere near that location?

BAZI   Wow  we now have some backround on that "under the weather" knee situation.  I'm also glad you don't have to deal with that instability again either.  YIKES  That fall in the street was a nightmare.  The interesting thing about sports is having to retire at 38 from play!!!  So many sports are like that.

CLYNN   Thanks for those emotional pics of Nadal.  Still such a young man.   LOLOL on the turkey legs cartoon - will show Tim  ;D

Hello Beakers

My relaxing day off from work went down the drain at lunch time..  My Microwave of 1990 manufacture, refused to work for my lunch.  90% of what we eat at home gets heated by the microwave.  Checked it out and determined that a part of the control board got too hot.  All of the safety switches were working fine.  So spent another hour on line to research for a replacement.  Then went to the local Best Buy (only local brick and mortor to carry what I wanted) to buy a replacement.  Got something to eat on the way home, since I missed lunch and then set it up and did online registration - so 7 hours later....

Tsk  I live in Nashville near the Metro area.  More accurately 'Cane Ridge' where one of the  Civil War battles was fought---known as the "Battle of Cane Ridge'. I'm just a few miles from the battle site.

Baz I heard the news about Rafael Nadal retirement on FNC's 'American's Newsroom" this AM.  It looks like he might be taking hard.       What  knee relief !?  LOL      Those injections are tightly regulated and cost $750 each even w/ Medicare there's a ded for me.
I was told they usually last up to 6mos. And, not to come in at 6mos because I was told that's longest the benefits last either. If I'm  not in utter
anguish --- .

CLynn  ROTFL  'turkey legs'; tks for  up date photos on Wanda's house

Karen never tried Publix's dressing. I buy Stove Top Turkey dressing --add fresh onion and chopped fresh celery and real butter
i think we're getting a  boneless T. breast. I miss my Mother's baked yams and marshmallows.

Lisa I was gonna say that cake would be great with a hot cuppa Joe in AM

OG  tks for links and all. I'll check 'em l out later.  ;)

It's ham for Christmas. Maggie will just luv that!!

Well I have 8 mins left before  one of my fave nighttime progs is on.
So best get crack'n.

  Good Night Everyone... SEDs

Old Guy, was this an over thestove install or counter model!   Most everything I cook is done in the microwave as well. I guess Thanksgiving will be another deal, but not much goes in there occasionally I cook something on top of the stove like pasta.. you had quite a day and I hope you’re relaxing now has any snow started there I hear it came down in Peoria, not expected to stick. good night bakers SEDS

Good Morning Beakers!

Lani, I knew you were busy, I can tell by your posts!  Mike back home tonight and most of your little shores done, now you can enjoy decorating for Christmas! Thanks for the video of the Smith Mansion, I wondered what it looked like inside! Very primitive, but what great views from the top floors!

karen, it tried hard to give us a little snow yesterday, but it was just a very light sleet-like moment or two. Very windy, which made it cold! I finally put my Impatiens to bed, they are hard enough to get out of the dirt as it is but impossible when the dirt is frozen! I admire them though, they were still blooming on 11/20!

Phyl, I am a Stove Top Stuffing fan too! This year I am mixing sage and turkey flavors!

oldguy, thanks for the videos, Santi's house looks like it has a long way to go before they can move in, but the critters will love it!  You are a trooper, I would have just bought a new microwave...We brought one like yours (from the early 90's) with us when we moved here in 96. It has been replaced twice. Unless you can repair it yourself you just about have to buy new! You are a great handyman!

I have my semi-annual appointment with the Retinal Specialist this morning so need to get ready! BBL!

The Zammit family from Sydney, Australia, gained fame for their refusal to sell their five-acre property, even though they received offers of up to $50 million. Their land became a prime target for developers as new residential neighborhoods were built around it, with roads curving around the property to avoid it.
Despite the substantial offers and growing pressure from developers, the Zammits remained steadfast in their decision to keep the land, prioritizing their connection to it over the financial gain that selling would bring.
The family's story is a rare example of people holding on to their land against overwhelming commercial interests.
Over the years, their home became a symbol of resilience, as they defied the allure of massive offers.
This situation caught the attention of the public, with many admiring their refusal to part with a piece of land that held sentimental and personal value, even when surrounded by major changes in the area.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away. ~ Unknown

📺 SLOTH TV
We know it’s been disappointing not to see the sloths on camera as often these past few days. Unfortunately, the recent cold and windy weather has been less than ideal for our slow-metabolism friends, potentially compromising their health if they stay outside for extended periods. All of the sloths at Toucan Rescue Ranch are orphaned individuals who are undergoing rehabilitation for eventual release, and their well-being and health are always our top priority. We appreciate your understanding as we put their care first!

🦥Sloth Preschool Update:

NEW ARRIVAL Lula: Lula arrived at TRR after being found next to her mother, who unfortunately passed away. She was fed cow's milk by her well intentioned rescuers and has been having some digestive issues as a result, which is a perfect reminder of why sloths and cow's milk do not get along! Has a reserved prognosis.

Beshayer 2F Sloth: Beshayer appetite has been improving and she’s been growing steadily, finding comfort and fun with her besties Zayed and Denahi. Has a reserved prognosis.

Zayed, 2F Sloth: Zayed is progressing really well. He’s growing steadily and maintaining a healthy appetite. He has devoloped a taste for adventure and can frequently be found climbing to the top of his climbing structure. He has a reserved prognosis at this time.

Denahi, 2F Sloth: Denahi has completed his treatment for anemia and, although he might seem a bit pale, his blood work shows great progress! His consumption patterns have also improved along with his curiousity for the world around him! Has a reserved prognosis.

Klara, 2F Sloth: Klara has been gaining weight quickly and remains very active during the night. She has earned herself quite the reputation as a fluffy piranha (we still love her though) and we are happy to share that she soon will graduate to Sloth Elementary!

Heidi, 2F Sloth: Heidi is currently undergoing treatment for anemia and a respiratory condition, so we are closely monitoring her progress. This little sloth-shaped cloud remains very active and maintains a good appetite. She has a reserved prognosis at this time.

Cello, 2F Sloth: Cello is showing steady growth and remains very active and feisty. However, he has encountered new obstacles in his recovery journey, including a fight with an abscess in his eye. If you would like to give this tiny one a hand, be sure to check out his campaign on Cuddly! Every dollar is one step closer to getting him back in the trees! https://cuddly.com/donate/4942441/cello

Pablo, 2F Sloth: Pablo continues to make great progress and his giant belly bald spot is all that is left after his full recovery from umbilical dermatitis. He maintains a healthy appetite and consistent weight gain!

Opal, 2F Sloth: Opal is growing stronger every day. She is steadily improving her agility and movement and she’s getting ready to graduate to Sloth Elementary!

Bonnie, 2F Sloth: Despite her ligament injury, Bonnie has begun using her hand more and more each day showing an impressive strength! She’s been eating well and remaining active, showing great determination in her recovery.

Clyde, 2F Sloth: Clyde has shown consistent growth, excellent appetite, and an adventurous personality. If you see a sloth moving around the structure, moving from top to bottom and all over the place, look closely as it's most likely Clyde!

TayTay, 2F Sloth: Tay Tay has been gaining weight consistently and maintains a healthy appetite. She has begun spending more time outside in the trees as she is now getting ready to graduate to Sloth Elementary!

Waylon, 3F Sloth: Waylon keeps eating on his own and gaining weight! He has a tremendous appetite and he demolishes every leaf presented to him!

Pixie, 2F Sloth: Pixie has been eating well and steadily gaining weight, showing remarkable growth despite being the smallest sloth we've ever received! We have been encouraging her to climb more as she’s getting ready to graduate to Sloth Elementary!

🌳Sloth Elementary / High School Update:
GRADUATE:
Preztel, 2F Sloth:
Pretzel has officially graduated to Sloth Elementary! He has been passing all his sloth courses with flying colors! He has been adapting well to this transition improving a lot, and continuing to eat and grow really well!

Beanie, 2F Sloth: Beanie has also graduated! She has greatly improved her mobility and is now eating all her vegetables without a fight (or tricks!). She is growing well and we are actively working on encouraging her independence.

Blake, 2F Sloth: Blake is being weaned off of smoothie! She has been adapting well and is becoming more independent each day!

Nevada, 2F Sloth: Nevada is currently in the process of being weaned off of smoothies, and she’s making excellent progress so far! She is gaining weight consistently and growing a lot!

Bruno, 2F Sloth: Bruno has also been growing very well and he’s being weaned off of smoothie. He is making his caretaker proud, as he is making remarkable progress in becoming more independent.

Fiesta, 2F Sloth: Fiesta is eating (and enjoying) more vegetables. She is adapting well and steadily becoming more independent.

Wyatt, 2F Sloth: Wyatt has been making remarkable progress. We are closely monitoring his consumption at the moment, but he remains healthy and active!

Tulip, 2F Sloth: Tulip continues to grow steadily and is being weaned off of smoothie. She recently recovered from some digestive issues and is now back to full health with even more strength and determination!

Rose, 2F Sloth: Rose is becoming more independent each day and is in the process of being weaned off of smoothie. She adjusting well to spending time in the trees!

Moose, 2F Sloth: Moose is also being weaned off of smoothie. We are monitoring his weight as it has been fluctuating a bit, but he is healthy and progressing well!

Grover, 2F Sloth: Grover has been spending more time outside! We are carefully monitoring his food intake as it has been fluctuating, but he remains healthy and we are very proud of his progress.

Binx, 2F Sloth: Binx remains active and is gradually becoming more independent as she spends more time in the trees and in an outdoor enclosure!

🎓Sloth University Update:

JJ, 2F Sloth: JJ keeps gaining weight and is adjusting well to this new stage so far! We have been working on developing his independence!

Mimi, 2F Sloth: Mimi is currently adapting well to her transition to our Release Site and continues to gain weight steadily. She has been developing more of her natural behaviors and is becoming more cautious towards humans!

Phoenix, 2F Sloth: Phoenix is making incredible progress so far. He keeps steadily gaining weight and independence!

Roo, 2F Sloth: Roo keeps growing steadily, and is getting closer to being back in the trees! We are really happy and proud of his progress

🕊️In Memory Of:🙏
Miztli, 2F Sloth, and Buki, 3F Sloth:
These two remarkable orphans arrived at TRR after surviving tragic circumstances, but unfortunately passed away from their injuries a few weeks after arriving at our clinic. Although you might not have met them officially (but you may have seen them on the porch), we decided to include them in the update as a testimony to their resilience and as a reminder that wildlife rehabilitation can have its ups and downs.

Ken, 2F Sloth: We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that Ken has unfortunately passed away. He encountered several health issues on his path to recovery but ultimately passed away due to a parasite. We will miss him greatly but we are sure that he is cheering on his fellow sloths on their path to being released.

Good Morning Beakers

Today is the first day that we have actually put on long sleeves!  It is a chilly 39° with the wind chill this morning.

Puff - I see snow this morning in Decorah.   :)

baz - Happy to hear that Punkin is back home, in school and back to her regular schedule.  I did go out yesterday, and look at a small tree 4.5 foot to put up, but I want Jeff to look at it.  I do love sitting in the living room looking at the lights.

clynn - Yep, I spent the $300 on groceries to get the free turkey.  It was not hard to do with the price of groceries.  You had from Oct. 1 thru Nov. 27 to spend that to get a free one.  Sounds like you are all set for Thanksgiving.  LOL, the pic for Tim and turkey legs!  Good luck at your appointment this morning.

karen - I hope you can get your fence problem fixed quickly.  I know it will be a pain.   Are you going to roast/bake the turkey thighs?

tsk - Yes, I forgot to mention that about the Berry Chantilly cake!  I hope you all like it.  I have bought it a few times from Whole Foods years ago, till Sam's started making the bar cake.

oldguy - I have a 1990's microwave too, and I hate to part with it!  I am hoping it continues to work...let me know on wood.  Glad you found a part for yours, but sorry it took all day.

Phyl - Jeff likes ham for Christmas too, with either potato salad or scalloped potatoes.

Lani - Thank you....I hope you are rested too.   Thanks for the TRR update!

A short video of the ice rink of our roads yesterday.

"DEADLY+WINTRY WEDNESDAY: Our mid-week was book-ended by accumulating snowfall in many areas of Minnesota, with hundreds of traffic crashes snarling roadways. The conditions led to widespread travel disruptions and worsening conditions through the day, with MnDOT crews working overtime, deploying plows and trucks to help keep roadways clear.

By around 9 p.m. Wednesday, there had been more than 570 crashes reported statewide, with over 45 involving injuries and 500 resulting in property damage. Spinouts and jack-knifed semis added to the mayhem, with over 60 vehicles spinning out and nearly 25 semis blocking roadways. Tragically, two of the crashes resulted in fatalities.

Slick conditions are expected to continue in some areas through Thursday, making cautious driving essential. For updates on these "

I watched/felt my front step turn to glaze ice over time yesterday...apparently shocking many drivers as well. As temps slightly shifted and wind picked up most surfaces at my house were glazed over.

We shall see as temps rise a titch today how much melting occurs...still have that list of things to do outside.

Lani - the battery lasted one month short of 10 years. Purchased in 2015...

tsk - Chris is better thank you. Just not entirely "normal" yet.

Good Morning Beakers!

This situation caught the attention of the public, with many admiring their refusal to part with a piece of land that held sentimental and personal value, even when surrounded by major changes in the area.[/size]

We're looking at two totally different mindsets.  They, the Zammets, appreciate what they have and have their souls in the right place.  Wish I was able to give each and every family member a BIGGGGG hug.  What love for their heritage and family.

Then, if you look closer, look at what surrounds them.  Different goals, different desires, IMHO the also- rans.  There isn't enough space to sneeze without spreading your germs or even the smell of  what you had for dinner.  Block after block, box after box    OMG.

Looking beyond the immediate center at the other housing surrounding the edges/outside the boxes  there does appear to be another choice?  So very glad we have so many other options and means to better our choices.  Glad I had choices, happy I made my way to my estate.   ;)
