Historic Places of the World

The Colosseum,   Rome, Italy

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheater in Rome, Italy that was built as a gift to the people of Rome:
Construction began in 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under his successor, Titus.

The Colosseum is 620 by 513 feet (189 by 156 meters) and stands four stories tall at its highest point. It was the largest and most complex amphitheater of the ancient world.
And  could hold up to 50,000 spectators. Who attended gladiatorial combat, dramas, public executions, wild animal hunts, and mock naval battles.
It had a sanded arena floor, trapdoors in the floor that served as elevator caps, and underground lifting systems for introducing wild animals into the arena.
Two-thirds of the Colosseum has been destroyed due to vandalism, earthquakes, and fires. Today, it's a popular tourist attraction, with over four million visitors annually.

KAREN  So nice of Dr Hall to come by and pick up Piper.  We have a solid routine with Lulu now with a Gabapentin mixed in with food (with treats on top as she smells something isn't right)  LOL and then we wait a couple hours til she is drowsy and then I hold her and Tim clips.  We do this about every 3 weeks.

PHYL   Love those cute little AM coffee drinking critters :D    365 - nice look above the canopies  :)

Follow up visit with surgeon this afternoon.

Royal Albatross update from Ranger Sharyn Broni :)

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)

Now that we are into November egg laying has begun. There is typically 3 to 4 weeks of egg laying with most laid during the middle part of November.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/albatrosses/royal-albatross-toroa/royal-cam/what-to-expect/#Nov-Dec

Nests are new and fresh and a lot of nest building and nest maintenance by the pair occurs at this stage. As pairs become busy with the task of incubation and foraging in turns, there will be less activity around the headland for a short time until non-breeder numbers build up. Non-breeders, including those who are returning to Pukekura for the first time in several years after fledging, will continue to arrive through to the end of the summer.

It is a busy time for rangers as well. The incubator room is running again, we prepare for the candling of each egg when they are 10 days old and irrigation for individual nests will be put in place once egg laying has finished.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/albatrosses/royal-albatross-toroa/royal-cam/rangers-work-for-royal-albatross/

A new location for the Royalcam will be selected once egg laying is completed.

In the meantime, the juveniles are heading across the Pacific Ocean. Although they do not travel together, the parents of the fledged juveniles have also headed across the ocean. The breeders at Pukekura now are new breeders, those that failed early in 2024 and those that fledged chicks during 2023.

Today's GPS tag update of juvenile toroa from Pukekura tagged 25th of September and 5th of October 2024.
The five males and five females fledged from 240 to 264 days.
The distance across Te Moana-nui-a-kiwa | Pacific Ocean, is over 9000 km. The last two juveniles are yet to leave New Zealand waters.

good afternoon and thanks for all of your well wishes.

Tomorrow Chris is having GI surgery at Abbott Hospital in downtown Minneapolis. A very very dangerous area. Though the hospital is top notch. First time the surgeon could fit him in an operating room. Plus, my Jeep is stalling again. Can't risk that happening on the way down there so I told him he has to Uber the drive there and back. We have a hospital this surgeon attends at as well that's down the street from the house, but he's too busy.

In the meanwhile he's been waiting for almost 3 weeks for appropriate care.....I'm just disgusted.

Prayers please for a good outcome and a safe uber drive tomorrow near noon.

Oh, and it's election day as well.....good grief.

Course we've already voted but Thanks Minnesota for never fixing our crime problem since GF...sarcasm.
It's only gotten worse.

Now I hear I can't uber him home for liability reasons. Surgery is at 1:30 plus post op may be later than 3:30? I can't send uber to pick him up for "liability" reasons. Will have to uber myself there possibly in the dark or have ssrl pick me up for a ride.

Prayers to continue please.

Lani, Go Chiefs! I'm hoping for Monday Night Football to distract me from all the other yucky news in the world - at least for a few hours... and then I will go to bed!  The weather may be iffy for the game... I hope there won't be a big delay, and they have a great game and win!  :D

Karen, oops, the Saints fired their coach after yesterday's game!  :o  It seems it didn't do to lose to the last place team (Carolina Panthers, who lost me as a fan years ago). I guess the good news is that it can only go up from here... for both teams!  ::)

Lisa, stay tuned for Tropical Depression 18's development and potential impacts. The models are all over the place right now. But it looks like maybe it will become a hurricane in the next few days (Rafael), and then maybe be way less strong than that by the time it gets to wherever it ends up going. Always subject to change, and could deliver a big chunk of rain somewhere along its eastern side, so keep up with its developments and forecasted impacts (not just the track, you know) at the National Hurricane Center's website.

Clynn, safe travels home tomorrow! I hope you don't have to dodge any bad weather. Awful storms, and damaging ones, in so many parts of the country the last few days! Prayers for all in the path of the severe storms.

Tig, enjoy your BOGO coffee.  ;D

KB, I hope all goes well for Chris, and that he will be feeling much better soon.

Waving to All the Beakers!  :)

TIG  Pretty good offer from Caribou!

LISA   Maybe " on the road again"  ;) ;)??   Is he still taking care of getting Mom's stuff organized?

KB   Certainly prayers for Chris tomorrow.   Sounds like a day surgery so let's hope that happens.  Is he nervous?  Some of the best hospitals are in rougher neighborhoods.   I see you answered my wonderings - about Uber...I've overheard people being told that.

BAZI   Darn tootin' Carl is going to catch the red dot!   ;D

Surgeon follow-up went well but we had to hit the walk in clinic on the way home for a skin tear ( Tim has skin so thin - on blood thinners - that it tears when you look at it) that wouldn't stop bleeding despite the mound of various bandaids we piled on top.
They got it under control but now need to see the wound clinic at our hospital

Tsk - I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I may have found an apartment for niece.  She will know something a lil more definite tomorrow. 🤞 Oh no, poor Tim and his skin.  Glad to hear the follow up with surgeon went well.

Baz - Thanks for the storm info.  Will stay tuned.  😁

Kb - Prayers for a successful surgery for Chris tomorrow 🙏

Good night, everyone 😴
