STL and LORI -- Thanks for the pics and gifs from this morning.

Of course we can't know for sure, but at this point I don't have any hope that the egg is going to hatch.

While I'm inclined to agree that the first egg will likely not hatch, MrN and DNF are acting like a mated pair, bringing new grasses to the nest, calling and flirting from various perches this afternoon.  I'm hopeful for another egg soon, maybe two.   :D

The eagles know best.  It sure seems something isn't right for that first egg.

The plot thickens about 11:30 this morning!  A red squirrel came to the nest, mostly for the corn husks, but also picked up the egg and tried to bite into the shell.  Twice!!  Don't think it was successful, but golly gee.

MrN has been on the nest most of the time.  DNF rousted him off at about 9:00, but she didn't stay either. Sounds of possible mating heard from trees to north of the nest, but not close enough for the cam ops to find them. MrN returned after the squirrel left; don't think he noticed the Red Raider.   :o

Puff, I never saw a squirrel try to eat an eagle egg, either.  Squirrels will eat eggs of songbirds, so I guess not so amazing to try the huge variety. EEeeewwww, they also eat baby birds!  Google it, you will see lots of links.

Decorah North home of DNF and Mr. North and little egg....

a squirrel picked up the egg today!!
Explore mod GABear stated "We haven't seen any sign that the egg is broken. Usually the adults will get fluid on their beaks and on their feathers when they move it or incubate it if it's broken."

Prayers for this family and little one coming💜

Mr. North says squirrels not allowed.

Mr. North brings DNF a fish and she is tucked in for the evening... all is ok.

Oh my, a squirrel going after the egg! Apparently, it happens elsewhere, but as far as I know, since 2011 it hasn't happened here in the Decorah nests! Glad the egg was spared and am hoping for the best for MM and HD. Thanks, all, for your posts, pics, and vids.

Between 5:00 (DNF in Scary Tree and creek, then to the nest) and 6:00 I believe MrN brought 2 food gifts to DNF on the nest. The second was definitely a large fish, and probably the first was a fish also. DNF ate the fish (or parts of) while MrN flew around and perched nearby. DNF did not stay on the nest; MrN flew in shortly after the nighttime cam went to black and white.  He is on the nest at midnight.  You can tell it is MrN from the tiny white feather lump next to his right eye.

nan  There's still the possible compromise of the egg because of the unusual time spent off egg.  Too many, too long breaks???  When was it, what nest, which eagle pair had the undeveloped egg?  I'm sure somebirdy has that stored away in the brain?  Mine's not working yet today.

Thanks, Puff. Yes, I've read that, too, about the long breaks away from the egg. Just didn't want to see it hauled away by the squirrel! Also, I agree there was an egg that didn't hatch but I'm not sure if it was Mom and Dad's or Mom and DM2's? Someone will supply the fact! ;) I'm staying hopeful for these two!❤️
