More info on the canoe/kayak trip on the Upper Iowa River:
Friday morning, July 15:  We will be going to the Upper Iowa Resort, which is a little over 35 miles from the Decorah hatchery (our previous outfitter has closed). Here's the address of the resort: 578 Lonnings Dr, Dorchester, IA 52140.  Plan on meeting at the hatchery at 9 am to get car-pool groups together.  We'll need to leave the hatchery by 10 am at the latest, to to the resort with plenty of time to get boats, paddles, and PFD's for everyone in time to leave for the float at 11 am.  Kayaks available are one-person boats, canoes are 2-person boats. Canoe rentals are $38, kayak rentals are $28, and each participant will pay the resort for your boat. Paddles & PFD's plus the shuttle to and from the put-in and take-out are all included. The float should take about 2 hours from put-in to take-out, and then factor in the travel time back to the hatchery after. We're still working out the details so if you have questions etc. post a reply here, or email me at [email protected]. (aka tulsaducati)

Information on the Trout Run Trail Bike Ride:

The bike ride takes place Saturday, July 16.  We'll meet at Decorah Bicycles at 9AM CT.  Located at 101 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101, right next door to the Whippy Dip. :)  Phone number: 563-382-8209. This year, only Electric-pedal assist bikes are available for renting. We'll get fitted for bikes, helmets, and will be given a tutorial on how to ride the E-bike if you haven't ridden one.  We'll be riding the easier half of the trail which is from the bike shop to the hatchery and back.  It's about 4.0 miles each way.  We'll take a break at the hatchery before heading back. Water will be provided.  Here's the link to Decorah Bicycles: https://www.decorahbicycles.com/articles/rentals-pg235.htm There are 2 larger hills that we'll encounter so the E-bike pedal assist should come in handy.  It's a beautiful ride and we go past N2B too!  For those that want to do the entire trail, it's an 11-mile loop around the city. https://parks.decorahia.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/TRT_TrailMap-2.jpg We'll be riding numbers #0-4 and end up where the Eagle is on the map. :)

I found an older video of a virtual bike ride on Trout Run Trail.  What's cool is one our 2011 juveniles is in the video.  There is a bug photobomb too. lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBDeUJET3OM

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me here in the forum or on my Glogdog Decorah FB page.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at After The Fledge!

Here is a bit of parallel trivia for those going on the Sunday riverboat ride. The boat is docked at the former site of the La Crosse Fish Hatchery. The brick building was the hatchery headquarters. It now is being renovated for use as a wedding event venue and AirB&B. The rest of the hatchery grounds, tucked behind the building, now constitute the Riverside International Friendship Gardens. It is a worthwhile stroll.

Restaurant changes in the past couple of years, off the top of my head.

McCafferty Dolce Vita has become Twin Springs Supper Club. It has been reviewed as the best restaurant in the state.
https://www.twinspringssupperclub.com/

Ruby's Cafe downtown has become Blazing Star, a vegan restaurant. Ruby's traditional Ronnie's [cinnamon] rolls might be found at HyVee. (Ronnie's was a great cafe decades ago.) Ruby's liver and onions is extinct, sorry. Maybe Blazing Star has a vegan liver substitute?

Convergence Ciderworks is a cider microbrewery downtown with a short yet enticing menu.
https://www.convergencecider.com/

Leslys Taco Trunk (she likes elephants) is a Mexican food trailer. She usually parks in the big lot behind McDonalds, across the highway from Culvers, Thursday-Saturday. A bit pricey, but excellent and large portions.
https://m.facebook.com/LeslysTacoTrunk

The Albatross is a food truck, gourmet burgers and a couple other choices, usually at Dixies Biergarten near Luther, Thursday-Saturday.
https://m.facebook.com/thealbatrossdecorah/

Impact Coffee has moved to a big beautiful location on the main street, formerly JCPenney. All three walk-in coffee shops (Impact, Java John's,. Magpie) have been expanding their food choices.

More coffee: Mill Street Mocha is on Mill Street just off Short Street. Same neighborhood as Family Table and Culvers. Good pulled pork on ciabata. Another drive thru, name I forget, is under construction on Short Street, don't think it will be open. Starbucks is in HyVee.

Kozi Pie Shoppe is right in the middle of downtown. Pies, quiches,  breakfast, lunch. They tend to sell out of stuff, so go early.

The Landing, near Luther next to Pulpit Rock Brewery, is a nice venue with a few vendors including coffee, ice  cream from the Sugar Bowl downtown,  sandwiches, a juicery owned by local NFL star Josey Jewell, and prepackaged snacks and beverages.
https://www.thelandingmarket.com/

301 Eatery with a variety of sandwiches and baked goods, and Beyond the Bar Bakery,  both are downtown and have had stuff that looks tempting, but we have rarely found them open.

High Wide and Handsome had great pizza but odd hours and the worst branding ever. They now are closed.

Lulu and BB's downtown has yummy healthy pet treats and tons of toys and gadgets for your fur babies.

If you stop at Culvers with your dog (anywhere, not only Decorah), ask for a free pupcup.

Reply with what I forgot, or your other food recommendations. Welcome and  bon apetit.

Annual warning about wild parsnip, which is abundant all around Decorah. It causes painful blisters and scarring that lasts for years.

Two more came to mind:

Stone Hearth Inn,  behind Super 8 and Quality Inn motels, is closed.

Old Armory BBQ has moved to a new location across the bridge from Whippy Dip.

Thanks so much Iver and Burl! I always kinda wanted to go to the Stone Hearth Inn, it's a shame it closed!
