Due to the drought, the Mississippi River is very low.
Barges cant carry as much load.

Drought here in the midwest, too much rain and flooding elsewhere, except where there are raging wildfires.  What a mess we have made of this planet.  I live south of the Flyway that we watch, close to but not in sight of the Mississippi. Probably barge traffic is restricted here, too.

Its October and shippers want to get goods shipped by barge before the river freezes -  so low water level is pretty serious.

Low river levels probably means an increase in freight train and truck traffic.  South of Missouri, even barges with smaller loads are getting stuck.

Fall colors are lovely in the GSB area.

Cedar trees have ripe blue berries that cedar waxwings love this time of year.  I believe that juniper berries are used to make gin.  No wonder the birds love them.   ;)

Beautiful fall colors, improving every day.  Enjoy watching the cedar waxwings gorging on berries.

Great Spirit Bluff is putting on a most colorful show this fall!  Barge traveling light from north to south.  Couple of trains.

Rusty-feathers on the perching Peregrine extend to the back of the head.

That train sat parked on the tracks a very long time - wonder why.

Shep, train maybe waiting for the tracks to clear further along, or for another train with priority to pass by going the other direction.  Just guessing!

This afternoon, 3:00 or so, a flock of swallows was active flying in and out of a round entrance on the cliff face, to the left of the nest box. There's a species called cliff swallows that occupy most of North America.  Experts, were these cliff swallows?

Unbanded adult peregrine perched at the nest box this morning for a couple hours.

Little birds active this morning, see Cardinal pic. Also downy woodpecker and wren that I didn't catch for a pic.

2-car barge that matches the fall foliage coming downstream about 8:30 AM.
