Jaspurr, about Newman's whereabouts -- two adult peregrines were on the feeding ledge yesterday.  One was Zooey and I am guessing that the other one was Newman.  It's not breeding season any more, so the pair bonds may not be very strong -- that's another guess!  The folks at Explore may have more recent information.  Please, chime in you-all.   :D

Wasn't this Newman this afternoon?  (7/20)

NORA, looks like Newman to me.  I thought Newman was the one that liked sitting on the ledge.  I saw Zooey this morning sitting on the dead tree branch below the box.  She flew off and the cam ops were able to follow her as she flew out over the Mississippi.  She looked fine to me.   :)

Use the talents you possess: for the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except the best.

They are not only going to ruin the Mississippi but Decorah as well.  Great.

Cam ops found a beautiful dragonfly this morning about 9AM, resting on one of the dead tree limbs on the bluff.  Might be a female common green darner -- I looked for Iowa Dragonflies and found a photo from 2005.  What do you think?

Beautiful dragonfly!!

Sounds like a good day to avoid Decorah with that many "invading", although that's a lot less than will be in Decorah during Nordifest.

About noon today, two Ps on the feeding ledge, Newman and Zooey?  Optical illusion perhaps, but one bird looks MUCH larger than the other.  What gives?

STL, I have given up on trying to identify these two.  Every time I think it is Newman it turns out to be Zooey.  All I know for sure is that Zooey is the falcon that lays the eggs.  LOL  I hope that hasn't changed.  Isn't the female suppose to be larger than the male?

Jaspurr, I looked up peregrines in AllAboutBirds, and the females are noticeably larger and more robust than the males.  So when N and Z are on camera together, the ID is easy.  It's when they are solo that we have trouble sometimes.  He's more white underparts, and she has the rusty, peachy color.  I recall that Nora has mentioned something about Newman's other feathering, but what???  I really like your laying eggs feature!   ;D

Does this look like white dots on head.  I think Ginger said this is an id for one of the falcons but now I can't find her post. :-\. The second photo is definitely peachy.  This must be Zooey in one of her few cooperative moods when she is facing the camera.  :D
