That's interesting about the gates expanding, never knew that!!!  If they enlarged the locks it WOULD help with the bigger barges.  "The American Queen is said to be the largest river steamboat ever built at 418 feet."

Shep, that's a great picture of the wide view with bluff and nest box, river with barge and powerboat.  And the one from Explore looks like it must have been taken from the ground.  No sign of the young peregrines, alas.

Another technicolor dawn.

Saw a white van parked on the nest side of the highway.  It was parked when the trains passed.  When was the last time Zooey and Newman were positively identified?

Anyone know what this little doll is?  Wren?

I'd say house wren, I got this off a bird website and we used to have a family when we lived in Cresco.  Haven't seen any since we moved here.

NORA, there was a white van parked on the grass near the trees below the nest box.  It looked like the side of the van was open and someone was moving around.  Don't know for sure what they were doing but it would make sense that someone took the picture mentioned by SHEP from the ground.  I don't think the cam could be positioned to angle up the cliff like in that photo.  Thank you for helping with the bird ID.  The long sharp beak is what confused me.  At first I thought it looked like a large brown hummingbird.  No such thing.  Then I thought a creeper but the markings made me think wren.  Next time I see my House Wren I am going to pay more attention to his beak.  Usually when I see him, he is yelling at me. LOL

About the small brown bird that might be a wren.  Remember that the website, AllAboutBirds can be very helpful in identifying the birds found by RRPs intrepid camera operators.  There are six or so species of wren, and this one sure looks like a house wren to me, too.

STL, I have enough birding books to fill an entire bookcase.  That includes the one you told me about last year, The Birds of Iowa.  I took a graduate course in Ornithology and some of my books are out of print by now.  LOL
