.  Meanwhile, here's a different kind of barge coming downriver this morning.  Shep, what can you tell us about this one?  Looks like for a vehicle or equipment to me.

Best guess

Nice catch of the swallows coming out of the cliff wall.  That IS a different barge.  Maybe like they put the big equipment on.  Interesting.

Spectacular sunrise at Great Spirit Bluff to begin July.  Newman is there, but no sign of the juveniles.  Still possible that they survived?

Peregrine on a small ledge this afternoon.  Unbanded, slightly rusty breast feathers, might be Zooey. What do you think?

SHEP,  is that a tourist river boat in the lock at GSB?  I will try and get a photo.

SHEP,   Looks empty.  Can't see a name.

I could picture myself sitting in a lounge chair on the top of that boat. ;D

There were passengers onboard.  That was too cool to watch.

THANK YOU cam ops for letting me watch that.

Jaspurr, great pic of the riverboat!  I've always wanted to go on a river cruise of the Mississippi R. but beyond my budget.

Here's a little wren greeting the day.  Might be too small for a peregrine to bother with.  Rewind to listen to the song.

STL, after checking out the prices of American Cruise Lines Upper Mississippi trips I have to agree with you.  I will have to be content watching from the cam op.  Watching the ship enter and exit the lock is what I really enjoyed watching.

The locks in operation are really fascinating.  Where I live near the Mississippi R., some of the locks have tours.  And in visits to the Seattle, WA, area, I've been right up close to watch the locks letting smaller motor and sail boats, into and out of waterways.

This morning there was one of SHEPS long barges going downstream toward the lock.  I was hoping that the cam op would stay on the barge because I couldn't imagine how that long barge was going to fit inside that lock.  It was being pushed by a large tug that I would think would have to stay with the barge in the lock to push it out.  Unfortunately they panned back to the cliffs before the barge went into the lock.  On my way home from the ATF last year I drove to Guttenberg hoping to get a tour of the lock.  The tour didn't open until noon and I needed to drive to Pella.  I would like to drive up the river into Wisconsin some time and go on a lock tour.  We rode a paddle boat up the river last year and I think La Crosse would be a nice place to stay.  We went as far as the lock before turning around but I got a chance to wave to SHEP on the cam and saw the GSB nest box.  Too short but fun.

This afternoon I saw a 15 car barge heading down river.
Sadly the cam stayed on the cliff instead of letting it show the trip thru the locks.  >:(

The 15s make 3 trips, 2 cars per trip.  Takes a LONG time!

GSB gave us a red morning sky to match the Fourth of July holiday!

And a barge for Shep and Jaspurr.  Guess when it's time to ship, it's time to ship, even on a holiday.

And a Peregrine perched on the big ledge, for all of us.

THANK YOU CAM OP for following that barge this morning into the lock.  The lock is  a lot longer than it looks.  A pretty tight fit.  Amazing that they do this with no mechanical assistance.  I watched the battleship USS New Jersey go through the Panama Canal.  There was only 10 inches of clearance on either side.  In the 1980's it was the largest ship to transit the Canal.  In Panama there were a lot of mechanical cars on rails to make sure that it didn't hit the sides of the Canal.  I am even more in awe of the tug boats that maneuvered that barge into the lock.  They make it look so easy.  SHEP, did you watch it?  THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

STL, the sun rising pictures were beautiful.  Thank you for letting me know about the barge this morning. I would have hated to miss it.
