LOL SHEP, that's a loud peep.  Sounds like they are rolling a lottery basket.  Kestrels use to be quite common here but with all the development I have to drive farther out to see them.  Their coloring is beautiful and I was told by an advanced birder that when they weren't sitting on a wire by the road you recognized them by their hovering behavior.  Will watch is cam.  Thanks

Chicks' quick breakfast is yellow-orange, possibly warbler.

Newman was trying his best to cover them up, his feet were slipping while he pushed forward, but nope.  They're getting too big for him.  :D

NORA, they are growing so fast.  It won't be long until they are banded.

Zooey & Newman try to cover the chicks. Shuffle, shuffle, but they are too big to fit now.  Also growing wing feathers and grayish down. And they are starting to grab at the prey, not just wait for a bit to be fed to them.

Saying a little prayer that the owl deterrent measures are in place same as last year.  Has anybody seen info about protecting the chicks from owl attacks?

At banding time, hope RRP can recover the egg that didn't hatch to determine why.

Breakfast prey today at about 6AM was a medium sized, black and white bird, with a banded tail and a wide white stripe across the wings.  Anybody know what it was?

Chicks are standing on their heels and moving around more, and the wing and tail feathers are really evident.

Yes Nora, interesting prey for sure.  I don't believe it's a woodpecker, but what can it be?  The watchers who use Explore are good at ID for all kinds of prey, but I don't know if they watch GSB.

The three chicks seem to be thriving, at about 16 days old.

Shep, did you mean that the b&w prey bird from the other day might have been a Northern Mockingbird?  Well, they do have some white across the wings, but not a barred tail.

STL, you are right mockingbirds do not have barred tails and barred chests.  Looks like a common nighthawk to me.
