Rest in peace, little SE18.  A short life for that little sweetie.  Heart is breaking for sure.   :'(

Blessings for success for SE17.

I'm very sad to see the news about the little one. I couldn't find SE18 tonight as I was watching the cam. I came here after I couldn't find any news of what happened. I'm so sorry to all here.  :'(

I am very sad to learn today about the death of SE18.  I have been away for some days and got home late last night so only seeing Forum and FB nest updates today - and still catching up, but just read in this thread the sad news.  :(    I read what was in that post about it, but since then, has there been any news of confirmation or sighting of SE18's remains in the nest, or disposition?

May sweet little SE18's spirit soar forever now.

For those not able to view the FB article, for any reason ... Here's a copy/paste of that official Sea-Eagle Cam public FB page's post about the death of SE18 (copyright 2016 Sea-EagleCAM Team) from their FB page link (posted earlier in this thread by peraspera) at:

Sad news

SE18, the younger and weaker of the two Sea-Eagle chicks, has apparently died overnight. It is no longer visible in the nest and is probably under the leaves lining the nest bowl. Its death was probably a result of a number of factors including insufficient food, sibling rivalry, poor weather conditions previously - essentially, failure to thrive. It may even have been suffering from an unknown disease or virus. Rivalry between raptor offspring is common, and frequently one chick may not survive, particularly when food is scarce. Parents feeding the young are not "fair" by our standards and will feed the most persistent chick. This is survival of the fittest and gives the remaining chick an even better chance of survival. it is common that only one chick survives.

The wonderful news is that the stronger eaglet SE17 is eating greedily and appears to be growing well. Warmer sunny days have fluffed out its down. The male is bringing in plenty of prey.

We are continuing to watch carefully for any signs of the little eaglet, or if its body is removed. However our research protocol means we do not approach the nest area at this very sensitive stage of breeding. Any disturbance could disrupt their behaviour and threaten the surviving eaglet.

Although this death is sad, these are wild birds and life can be harsh by our standards.

Again, it is our privilege to watch the lives of these magnificent hunters.

Posting Faithy's poem. :-*
In reflecting on the loss of SE18, I have reviewed all our losses - and our successes - and it reminded me of my poem in honor of S1 (SE7) after their loss at a week old.
I thought maybe I could share that again with you all - so we can reflect on the losses in peace with Nature.
I have renamed it.
In Memory of Seaglets Lost
we had hardly got to know you
we had hardly had the time
and you showed us so much promise
only to leave before your prime
your sibling and your parents
each react in their own way
it is only natures lesson
we are being taught today
but nature is not teaching
the lesson that we see
what nature wants to show us
is that what will be will be
we want a deeper reason
we want to understand
that is our species talent
to want to comprehend
but nature says just listen
the lessons in the air
here you are not masters
no matter how you care
Will remember & love you Dad Decorah.

Faithy is a talented poet and shared much wisdom in that poem.  Many thanks to Faithy for sharing.

Thank you for posting it here, MpMom.
