Ginger, I am so sad to hear this news of Mum being missing, and just as much, to learn that she lost her voice all the way back in December.  I fear for Mum as a result of learning this.   :(   Poor Mum... she has been a determined and caring Mum to her eaglets, and mate to Dad.  I hope she can somehow overcome any possible health issues she may have and return to her normal roosts and activities.   :-* :-*

Unfortunately, avian loss of voice can have a number of causes, and many of those causes are potentially serious diseases or illnesses that may involve the syrinx, such as some respiratory illnesses like aspergillosis/aspergillus, or others that can be fatal if not caught and successfully treated early.  Of course I'm not saying that Mum had, or has, any serious illness - I so hope she doesn't.  But loss of voice in birds can be a symptom of very serious illness.  Prayers for Mum.   :-* :-*

Posted 4 hours ago on WBSE Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Sea.EagleCAM/

We have not recorded any sighting of our female Sea-Eagle "Mum" since 21st February, when the pair were seen on their mangrove river roost on the Parramatta River.

Before that date, both had been seen in Burns Bay, along the river and in the nest area, but only the male since. We feel the female had been showing signs of *distress for some time and sadly, she has now disappeared. While we shall continue to keep watch for possible sightings, given the amount of time now passed, her return is unlikely.

Be assured that we have done our very best to locate her. Contacting various rescue organisations, wildlife hospitals etc. The river banks / mangroves at Newington and Burns Bay have been thoroughly searched. The reserve has very dense scrub and has been searched several times, however it's very hard to comb every inch of land. Even the people who clean the river and some ferry staff have been asked if they've seen anything.

From observations in the past, there are lone adults or juveniles, searching for a mate or territory. We shall be watching with great interest to see if another eagle appears. We ask that everyone reports any other eagles seen in the area or nearby.

*Note from Judy

To add a little more information - I don't believe she would have left the area or "divorced" him - but rather that something has happened to her.

For some time our watchers have noticed some problems - losing her voice, coughing, and so on. Our research policy has always been non-intervention, as they are wild free-living birds.

If we had found her on the ground or similar we would however have taken her into care - as we have done with SE15. There are many environmental issues as well as various viruses and other problems in this urban area.

All would contribute badly and cumulatively to the health of our eagles. She was also a good age - well over 10 years. Everything we learn from our observations will contribute to our knowledge and conservation of these and other raptors.

Mum showed signs of illness (loss of vocals) on 10th of December.

Here is another video 18th of January showing coughing, sneezing, panting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKKLyFoDrcE&feature=youtu.be

Subsequent sightings both at river roost (by Cathy and Judy) and on the nest showed that the coughing, sneezing, panting had gone away but the loss of vocals remained. Last visit to nest on 10th of Feb, they both looked normal.

Throughout the summer and prior to mum's disappearance both parents made frequent round trips to Burns Bay (16kms), sometimes spending the night there. They were both observed flying around, hunting ie. normal behaviour.

Thanks, Ginger, for the latest update. Hard to accept that we may never see Mum again. Feel so bad for Judy and Geoff.  :(

Ginger, thanks for posting that update.  It's such sad news about Mum.   :'(  :-*   It's clear that many people did their best to see if she could be located, and I am thankful for their efforts.  I know that whole team must be very sad.  I've watched the past two complete nesting seasons here, so this will be my 3rd full nesting season to watch, if we get a brood to follow here on cam this year...  I hope Dad stays healthy and well.  Hopefully he will attract a new mate and be able to raise a brood, even if we don't get to see it on live cam.  Tears for Mum, Hugs for all who follow these Eagles, this nest, and cam, and Talons crossed for Dad.

Nothing has gone right here since 2012.  Even then, it tried to go wrong.  :'(

Congratulations to Dad and his new mate on their first egg!   :D

Hope this means we'll be able to start a new thread for 2016.  This nest certainly could use a break from all its misfortunes.

Thanks WW and MpMom!

MpMom, since you started this thread, maybe you can edit the thread's title to include "2016" in it (for general info, and so Amy and others will know it's for the current nesting season, too).

Talons crossed for this season here.  WW, I agree, it would be great to have a successful nesting season here this year!  MpMom, I wonder if the new "Mum" here is experienced... I guess we will learn as the season comes along... and so will she if she is a first-time Mum.  :) :-* :-*

Yay!  Thanks, Mp!

I haven't been able to see the egg yet.  I don't know if it's my eyes, or if it's too deep in the cup to see.  ;)

LOL.  MpMom, thanks for your pics, and the arrow - I would never have known that is the egg otherwise.  :D    You know what the bullfrogs say... Q: "How deep?"  A: "Mighty deep."  ;)
