Dang it! Lost my entire post. Do I really have to start copying everything before hitting "Post?"

Let's start this post over, shall we?

baz - I did the same reading you did. I also found that when adults (parrots) acquire the virus, they usually develop immunity to it but can pass it on to nestlings, and others, for the rest of their adult lives through their feathers, beak and talon flakes, etc. We'll never know how SE15 acquired the virus if, in fact, the diagnosis is correct, but with his early developmental issues one could assume that whatever he's ailing from now was with him before he hatched. Poor, sweet little baby. Hoping for the best.

I'm wondering if he didn't have this from the get go, a long difficult hatch, then when he was so cold, his sister had down, but you could see his skin, of if that initial struggle didn't compromise his immune system.   Anyway, I'm sure they will do everything they can for him.

T40, I got tired of losing my posts, too, so I am trying to remember to copy them before hitting the "Post" button - but dang it all, sometimes I forget and lose the whole post.  Very frustrating, indeed.   ::)

Hi to MpMom and nrstooge, too!  Thanks for your posts.  :)

I also believe that SE15 displayed developmental problems from the get-go, but of course we have no way to know from what or why, or even when little SE15 contracted the BFD virus, if in fact that is what he has... but the symptoms sure do point to that.

I'm glad SE15 is getting all the wonderful care he can get at this time.  I just hope he can be kept comfortable as he is treated and cared for.  Poor baby bird... He may have been weak as a nestling, but SE15 showed so much Strength of Will while at the nest, and I'm betting he still is... Sweet little Sea Eagle 15, I am pulling for you.   :-* :-*

SE15 UPDATE - 18th January, 2016

We have some sad news regarding SE15. His condition worsened and euthanasia was deemed necessary.

According to Larry Vogelnest, the senior vet at Taronga Wildlife Hospital:

?He has deteriorated recently, appetite reduced, demeanour changed and his beak had to be trimmed so he could eat. I also feel now that it is unlikely he will ever have normal feathers. All new feathers coming through are abnormal and often break easily resulting in haemorrhage. It was no longer in the birds best interests to keep him alive in the faint hope he may recover.?

A necropsy has been performed and extensive testing will be undertaken to learn more about beak and feather and its associated pathology. SE15?s legacy will be that this information may contribute towards the understanding of how this virus affects raptors. We have also received a pathology sample for POP (Persistent organic pollutants) testing. This sample, when analysed will be compared to the other data we?ve gathered over the duration of this research project.

We would like to thank Taronga Wildlife Hospital for doing such a wonderful job caring for SE15.

Very sad about SE15, but it is better for that little one, it never would fly without problems...
Now it can fly high, nobody needs to rescue SE15 again...
Fly high little one, you will meet several well known other eagles... your sibs too...

Thanks nrstooge, MpMom and Eagle-Duck.  Sad news for SE15, but I understand their decision.   :(     I thank all of those involved in his rescue and heartfelt care.  They did their best to help him all they could.      Thanks for posting the update and the wonderful memory pics of SE15.

Sweet SE15, you will be missed and remembered.  May your spirit always soar free and easy.   :-* :-* :-*

I definitely teared up a little at the end.

Posted March 6, 2016 on WBSE Facebook page:

PLEASE READ THIS - While it is common for us not to see a lot of mum and dad at the nest/reserve early in the year, we usually see them at their roost spots - Parramatta River near Ermington Bay and Burns Bay, Lane Cove.

We have not seen mum for two weeks. If anyone has seen her, please contact us.
------------------------------------------------------

Also, WBSE commented that she was last seen on the nest on Feb. 10.  It was also mentioned that she lost her voice in Dec. and it hasn't returned.  WBSE has been concerned about her losing her voice.

This doesn't sound good to me.  I hope Mum is ok, but I fear she is not.

Oh, no! This is terrible news, but hoping for the best. If Mum had been ill for a while, it might help explain some of the reproductive difficulties this nest has had. Such a gorgeous pair of eagles. Hope they're reunited very soon.  :(

Just read the news, in Beakroom about our missing Mom Sea Eagle...how worrisome this .  :(
I truly hope that she is well  or at least taking some time for solitude to recoup her strength for a return to normalcy.
