update on SE15:
UPDATE 5pm - Geoff visited SE15 at the vet and fed *him (generic term, we don't know gender yet) barramundi. I think he said 7 or 8 pieces, which is pretty good. As well as no bone breaks (mentioned earlier) he has no ticks or parasites. His neighbours are now a noisy miner and a turtle.
As per Judy on SS this afternoon. SE15's remaining damaged primaries were removed along with a couple of secondaries. SE15 will not be returned to the nest, as there will be a lengthy stay in rehab. The feather damage was not caused by fall or from fighting with SE16, blood tests will hopefully identify the cause.
There is no ETA at present on when the results are due.

SE16 has been flying around and seems to be doing well.

Thanks, nrstooge.

There was more info on that same SeaEagleCAM FB page (public page - all can view it at https://www.facebook.com/Sea.EagleCAM ) that was
posted in an earlier update at 2:15PM before the 5PM update posted above by nrstooge, so I'm going to include that below, as well as some related info in a comment posted on that page under one of those updates.

So this post below is copy/pasted from that FB page, and it was posted prior to the 5PM update posted above by nrstooge but has additional info:

Post from 12 hours ago:

UPDATE - 2:15pm Geoff met with the vet at ARH a short while ago. X-rays were clear and SE15 "appears" well. They have drawn some blood for testing. Geoff is going back there later this afternoon with some barramundi for SE15. Hopefully there will be another update later today.

I'm also copy/pasting a comment that was below that 2:15PM update, using the initials of the commenter's name:

D.Y. - Judy said in SS that wings were malformed and the primary all were bad, so 15 will not be going home for and extended time , they removed his primary feathers at this time ... waiting for blood work results now  9 hrs

My comments follow now...

I don't know if the "wing malformation" mentioned above is something separate from the situation described as the "damaged primaries" or not.  I guess we will wait for additional info when it's available after all the test results are back.  I had noticed in one of the s'caps posted here the other day, of SE15 with wings fully spread out, that one of the wing's (was it the left one?) looked like it had an odd curve to the portion where the primary feathers are, but I didn't know if that was due to cam angle or not.

I came back to this post to add the following info...

Oh, I went back and found the s'caps I remembered... They were posted by MpMom in this thread and can be seen at:
http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/index.php/topic,1933.msg440857.html#msg440857
where you can click on the 3 attached 'scaps posted by MpMom (Thanks, Mp!) and see the wings and feathers while SE15 has wings spread.  I thought they looked a little odd, but I know the feathers would still be growing even at time of fledge, so I wasn't sure if that explained what I saw, or if it was the cam view and angle, or if there was in fact something not quite right with the feathers.

Knowing that primaries, and some of the secondaries, were not properly formed, makes me love the little SE15 even more - so much spunk and will to carry on despite all that.  Love ya SE15!  :-* :-*

Hi pera!  Thanks for the news on SE16 and the video.

I went back and added a little more to my post above yours.  I'm sure there are birds in the wild who aren't "perfect."  But I agree with you that I think they only meant the feathers were malformed, not the underlying wing structure.  I think it's important to be careful about how such things are worded to avoid misunderstandings.  I know we'll have to wait for new feathers to re-grow to replace the primaries and secondaries that were removed to find out if they will grow back in normally, and if SE15 will be able to live in the wild successfully.  This is going to be a long haul.

Love that SE16 is doing so great!  Love ya, SE15!   :-* :-*

Thanks, Pera, for posting Judy's comments directly from chat/SS, which clarifies that it's the feathers that are malformed.  Good to get it "straight from the mouth" of the person who made that comment.  Judy's chat statement apparently got a little "tweaked" by the time a different person attempted to share that info in FB comments.

"Hello friends! - 15 here, reporting from the Animal Referral Hospital" - "Thanks to two angels, (Geoff & Judy) who searched for me in pouring rain and some hail, I enjoyed a great meal in the comfort of a dry abode. I never thought I would be held in human arms, but let me tell you, I could feel the love Geoff had for not only me, but all eagles and wildlife. Judy told me, 'what a handsome fella you are 15!' Aww, shucks, Judy, you made me blush. ☺ Reflecting back on the many hours I spent perched on that branch, let me just say it was the greatest challenge of my life. The only time that would come close would be the day I climbed out of the nest bowl to be fed. That was my 'Mount Everest' moment, when I finally reached the top and wobbled towards mum for food, glorious food. smile emoticon *Squonk! Squonk! Squonk!* In not too many hours from now, I will be checked out by an Avian Vet. Geoff or Judy will update you all on the results of that examination. I miss mum & dad, who were just awesome parents to yours truly. I even miss 16, who encouraged me to be all I could be. I also want to express my appreciation and love to all of you who have followed my progress since August. You guys are the best human friends a seaglet could ever dream of having. I leave you for now with a song which I hope you will enjoy. I've not given up on my dream, and I encourage you not to give up on your own. And remember, no matter the daily struggles you face, no matter how high the mountains in front of you appear, courage and perseverance are the two things which will result in conquering what seems to be the impossible - I speak from experience." - *Very grateful to be alive & well cared for* ~ Your friend, 15

WW JW, thanks for posting the vid of the rescue of SE15 and feeding afterward.  I had just seen it on the SeaEagle CAM FB page where it was posted a few minutes before.  I was so surprised to see the hand-feeding.  I can't imagine why tongs or forceps weren't used instead.  Maybe that's a one-time thing for some reason.

I hate he had to have his primary flight feathers and some secondaries removed, but I know they would need to do that to trigger new feathers to start growing in to replace the malformed feathers that were removed.

MpMom, I hope for SE15, too.  There are many unknowns at this point.  S/he looked so sweet in the video.

There is nothing about SE15 that isn't lovable. I wished so much better for him or her but the oopsie to the ground got SE15 safely into care without injury. I'm ever so grateful for that small gift of fate.
Very well put!

At this point I'm sure that they are likely trying to get SE15 fed any way that works. They well might have found that SE15 would not accept food using other feeding methods.
That certainly makes sense.

I found this link for the Taronga Zoo wildlife rehabilitation information - https://taronga.org.au/animals-conservation/wildlife-hospitals/wildlife-rehabilitation
Thanks for the link.  Sounds like 15 will be in the best of hands.

Thank you all so much for all the updates on sweet SE15! The developmental issues remind me so much of Decorah/D20. Aren't we all so lucky to know both are doing well and receiving the best possible care from people who do, and/or soon will, love them as much as we do?  :-* :-*

Thanks for updates!  I am glad that SE15 will be able to transfer to that Zoo vet for care.  It sounds like they have more robust facilities to meet the more long-term needs of a raptor like SE15.   I hope the test results will still be shared when they become available and that the Zoo staff will share updates on developments related to SE15.  If SE15 can be housed eventually in a more natural environment (if well, healthy, able, etc.), then perhaps with proper handling and rehab, and if new feathers grow in normally, a future release may not be out of the question.  It will be a long haul till those feathers re-grow, and then if they are normal, and if SE15 is otherwise healthy, and kept as much in a wild status as possible... a lot of "Ifs" - but it's been done before, so I will remain hopeful for future possible release until if it is determined that it can't be.  Meanwhile, yes, as pera said, so glad that SE15 was able to be taken in for good care.  Thanks for the update/vid of SE16, pera.  I hate the currawongs are so unrelenting in their harrassment and hope it won't affect SE16's continued development and success as a fledgling.

Glad to hear that SE15 is adjusting and eating well at the hospital.  Yay!   :) :-*  Those are interesting notes about the feathers.  I don't recall any Mod chat or official FB site reps for this nest mentioning any apparent poor food choice that could lead to nutrition issues, and we were often told that both seaglets were fed well.  SE16 had the same diet as SE15 and doesn't appear to have feather development issues since SE16 is being seen flying normally and is able to return to the nest on his/her own flight abilities.  I would be completely surprised if nutritional deficiency caused or contributed to SE15's feather problems.  But no matter what the cause, I just hope they grow back normally.  We will find out.  There are other causes of feather growth abnormalities besides nutrition.  SE15 clearly displayed other developmental issues ever since taking so long to hatch - there is no denying that - it was clear to see daily on the cam, and one of the reasons I cheered so much for SE15 with each accomplishment.   :-*  I will be hopefully cheering for SE15 to recover and grow and develop to the point of being able to be released back to the wild one day.  Talons crossed.  But either way, I am so happy about where SE15 is now and thankful that caring people were able to see to his/her needs.  Love you, SE15!  Stay strong!  :-* :-*  I am also very happy to hear about SE16 being seen with Mum and Dad near the river, and I assume the most recently posted s'caps here of SE16 at the nest are after the river visit - meaning SE16 flew back to the nest after flying to the river with Mum and Dad.  Yay SE16!  Love ya!  You're doing great!  Thanks, Mum and Dad!  :-*

pera, thank you for posting the updates and s'caps and vids!  :)
