What a treat.  Sandhill Cranes. That is a sound one never forgets.  I hope they got out of there safely.  Ginger, your new name is going to be eagle eyes. :) :)

Hey Jaspurr, nice to hear/read from you!  Are you enjoying all the non-eagle birds at the Decorah nests, and Decorah North?

Hello STL, I certainly am enjoying watching the Decorah nests.  I really missed the scenery when the cams were off.  It is so beautiful to see the Barn at the DN and the green fields at the North nest.  I even missed the cows mooing.  The new mics are amazing.  I think I heard Dad snoring last night.   ;D.   Looking forward to looking at the pictures and of course, seeing some new bobbleheads.  I hope you will continue to give me advance warning when things get too messy at the nest.  You know I have a weak stomach for too much gore. :)

Jaspurr, I'll do my best to warn of blood and guts!  I'm really interested in the prey that the BEs consume, so my closeups can be explicit.  It's the old science teacher in me, and my upbringing learning animal anatomy from my hunter father.  I think he wanted me to go to medical school.  Didn't happen.

Lisa, some people refer to starlings as nuisance birds but they are a pretty little bird with their iridescent plumage.  I even enjoy listening to their chatter at the eagles nest.  They are immigrants that have adapted very well to living in this country.
STL, you would have loved this.  I drove to Cox Farms and on the roadside was a dead dear that was being scavenged by approximately 30 Black Vultures.  First time I had seen so many black vultures in one place.  Stopped my car and watched them for about 20 minutes.  Fortunately, I had my binoculars with me.  They didn't seem bothered by my close presence and it was fascinating to watch the hierarchy among the group members.

I like the Starlings too...I think they are so pretty.

Jaspurr, starlings make good pets, apparently, and they can learn to talk, like a mynah bird. See link in attached JPG for a blog with more info.  I believe that Shakespeare kept a starling as a pet, and there's a book about.  Will find the title.

Lisa, nice to see a visitor at DNN. We'll never know if it is one who used to live here a few months ago!  The Norths are tolerant of visitors when it's not breeding season.

Good closeups of a nuthatch and it's prey, a wooly bear caterpillar, about 2:00 on the rewind.  Cam ops -- amazing quality on closeups!

I was wrong! It's Mozart who kept a starling as a pet!  Here's the book. I read it last summer.  The author also had a pet starling.
