NW - I believe RRP said that even if the landowners would allow it, they can't shoot lines into or climb up a dead tree. So, I think cams are out for N3. :(

Thanks for the info T40!  The thought crossed my mind that DM2 might have picked that tree because it was dead...no leaves, no bugs!  That first year he was with Mom was when the gnats & flies were so bad that it drove D32 & D33 from the nest.  So maybe picking that tree for N3 was no accident.

Let's keep our talons crossed that Mom can get DM2 to come back to N2B.  I've enjoyed watching the north nest this year and have learned so much about the country cousins, but really miss watching Mom and DM2.

NW, here is some info from RRP in reference to T40's post in regards to N3.

The Decorah Eagles and 2021/2022
 June 23, 2021  RaptorResource
We’re getting a lot of questions about watching the Decorah Eagles in the 2021/2022 season. John talked about this during our interview with Iowa Public TV last night and I wanted to share it with the wider world.
Are we going to be able to watch the Decorah Eagles next season? It’s gotten very complicated. The N3 nest tree (as many of you know from Robin’s Day Trips) is dead. Even if the landowner was excited about streaming, we can’t climb the tree to install cameras and we don’t know how well we can see them from adjacent trees, or how long those trees will remain healthy.

Bald eagles tend to abandon nest trees once the crown has died back and stopped producing leaves, so we don’t even know whether Mom and DM2 will stay. They could return to the hatchery and N2B or build a new nest in another tree. Eagle researcher Mark Stahlmaster didn’t count eagle nests as abandoned until they went five years without use, which gives us hope for N2B. Here’s a video that gave several of you hope for a new nest at N1. Mom looks lovely and neither of the eagles seem ready to rent out N2B!

So: we were working on ways to stream N3 until we learned that the nest tree was dead. This new wrinkle has caused us to rethink our plans. We’ll continue to watch the hatchery in person and remotely, and hope to know a little more about Mom and DM2’s plans by early September. We’ll share our observations with you. You can help us by sharing your observations via youtube, explore, facebook, and our website as we watch and wait to see what they do!

So it sounds like Mom slept at N2B possibly last night?  I hope she is able to persuade DM2 to nest there next season.  I think she really misses it.

Loved that "Hope DM2 knows happy wife, happy life!", tig!  C'mon Mom, show him some of that spitfire we all know and love!  ;D

Nice shots Lisa, T40, and tig

I don't know if RRP is still trying to get the landowner to let them put cameras at N3, but it would be great if Mom was able to get DM2 to come back to N2B before RRP goes through the expense and time to install new equipment.  However, doesn't history show that they usually don't return to a prior nest, other than to visit?  Although I think Mom would have been happy at the Y branch (N1?) also if there had been a nest to go back to.

Thank you, NW  :)

tig - Thanks for bringing that RRP post over here and T40, thanks for the info too about the new nest.

tig, thanks for sharing the info from RRP!  I didn't know that about a nest being considered abandoned after 5 years of non-usage.

A few pics from Decorah today - I am gonna guess this was Mom on M2 this morning behind the maple leaves.  You can see her beak pointed up, as she vocalized when she arrived.  She sat there for a while, and then moved over to another branch where you could just see her tail and then finally flew off.

Lisa, Great pic of Mom Decorah.  Maybe she will bring the fledglings this weekend to celebrate 4th of July?

I notice there aren't any leaves at the top of Mom's maple.  Hmmm....
