Decorah Eagles 2012 D13 and 14 Horsing Around. 7/9/12

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w2NRKaXkE0

From the videographer notes:

On the evening of July 9th 2012 D13 and D14 where in the pasture near the creek.  D14 got after what appeared to be a backpack. Do not know whether D14 thought it was food or was just playing with it. D13 decided to go into creek for a drink.  I talked to Bob the next morning and he went to retrieve the object D14 was attacking.  It turned out to be a fly mask that had fallen off one ot fhe horses.

T40 - that was a great video!  I don't think I have ever seen that one before.

T40, thanks for the video memories!  So the fledglings in 2012 were D12, 13, and 14.  Which was the one with the transmitter in the fly-mask video?  The Nest Records history does not say.   My horses wore fly masks, so I appreciated the video even more.

STL - D12 was electrocuted early on after fledging. The fledgling in the video without a transmitter is D13. D14 is the fledgling in the video with a transmitter, but was also electrocuted. Because she had a transmitter, Bob was able to locate her. It was a heartbreaking year, but Eagleholics and the Decorah High School Shop class jumped in to fund and create safe perches on power poles located near N1.

Oh Lisa, isn't it great to see Mom in the hatchery area!  I wasn't sure if that was also Mom in the pine trees soon after M2.  She hasn't claimed the fish at N1 yet, but maybe they are petrified by now. Ha.

Did you notice the number of views for our Forum pics?  Glad to know people are checking in.

Love the pic of Mom flying past Red.  T40, yes, I remember when the fledglings played with the horses' fly masks in the pasture!  Funny.  I think it was my first year of eagle-watching at Decorah, so maybe 2016?

STL, it was great to see Mom at the hatchery this morning.  It made my day.   :D

T40, thanks for the added info.   Between the toxic shot still allowed in some states (like mine), power poles that electrocute raptors, and wind farm turbines that wipe out way, way too many birds, it's a rough go for so many.  When high school students pitch in to help wildlife, I think there's hope for us all!

Good morning Lisa
Hard to post this morning.  Thinking about Phyl and Maggie but your pictures of the barn and sun on the nest help.

Mom flew to the maple, stayed there for a bit, flew toward the hatchery, circled back around, but flew under the leaves and out of sight.

BL, I envy the places you get to see and experience!  Your pic of Jordan Pond reminded me of a canoeing/camping trip I took years ago in Ely, MN.  The water was so clean and clear you could dip a cup in and drink right from it.

Ruby, thanks for the video of the eagle released after suffering from lead poisoning.  It did seem a little shaky or unsure of itself at first.  Hope it continues to improve and survive.  I put one of the lead poisoning stickers I got at this year's ATF on my bumper - hope it makes people think.

STL, Lisa, fantastic pics!  Even without Mom & DM2 the views of Decorah are simply beautiful!  Looks like the retention pond dredging isn't scaring Mom away, but I wonder how DM2 is handling it.

T40, loved the video of D13 & D14 checking out the horse fly mask!  I was surprised they weren't spooked by the family talking in the background. It was a heartbreaking year with two of the three electrocuted, but that video reminds us of the freedom they got to experience if even for a short while.  And it was a catalyst for change, prompting the students and eagle lovers to cap off the poles.

Tulsa, great catch of Mom doing a fly-by over Red!  He looked up for a minute and then went back to whatever he was doing, like "It's only Mom".  ;D

Looking forward to this next season and hope Mom and DM2 are healthy and ready to make N1 or N2B their 2022 home base.
My spirit will never be broken or caught, for the soul is a free flying thing, like an eagle that needs neither comfort or thought to rise up on glorious wings.

Around 10:04am - an eagle flew towards the bluffs west of N1, and perched on two separate branches.

NW - Thanks  :D  Love the Fall views from Decorah!

Nope, I don't think anything scares mom away!  ;D
