They included a short segment about this on "The Five" yesterday. The owl looks like a kids stuffed animal :). Never heard of a Saw-whet owl before, but I'll sure be doing some research on them now. Cute little guy.

Shep, This was posted in the "beak" last night too! ;)

Via Bazi...
An updated story from 5 hours ago about Rockefeller, the saw-whet owl, who is at a rehab facility in upstate New York:
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5808547/tiny-owl-found-unharmed-in-rockefeller-tree-is-a-christmas-miracle-says-rehabilitator-1.5808659 - "Tiny owl found unharmed in Rockefeller tree is a 'Christmas miracle,' says rehabilitator"

Read the whole article for an update on his condition, and status and care, and plans for release this weekend.  The story includes this, "Saw-whet owls are nomadic, so Kalish says there's no reason to drive him back to Oneonta. She's planning to release him this weekend in a nearby stretch of pine forest, where he will spend his days hiding in spruce trees and his nights hunting rodents.

'He may look like a cute little Furby, but underneath all that, he's an amazing predator.'"

Ravensbeard Wildlife Center update on Rockefeller aka "Rocky" the lil owl

Ravensbeard Wildlife Center update via Facebook
Hello everyone! Rockefeller is doing very well. He has been moved to an outdoor location so that he can acclimate to the weather. Today we are scouting locations and determining the best timing for his release, which will likely be tomorrow or Monday. We'll be sure to provide you all with an update once we have it.

November 22nd
Hello Everyone! Thank you for your continued support over the past few days, it has been so wonderful to read all of your messages & comments!
We?ve been working hard to ensure that Rockefeller is well taken care of. We always consult with experts & avian veterinarians before the release of a bird, to ensure they have the best chance of reentering the wild. That's what we've been up to these past few days. We will continue to keep you posted, as we know we all want the best for little Rocky.

We are a small non-profit, and your support helps us to be able to continue our work making sure birds like Rockefeller are properly cared for before their return to the wild.
Rockefeller and the rest of the birds here at Ravensbeard thank you for all the support!

Safe travels to my favorite lil owl "Rocky"... enjoy your adventures lil girl!

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree owl set free

https://www.foxnews.com/great-outdoors/rockefeller-center-christmas-tree-owl-set-free

"The tiny brown-and-white speckled Saw-whet that inadvertently traveled from Oneonta to Manhattan aboard this year?s Rockefeller Christmas tree was released back into its natural habitat on Tuesday night.
Workers with the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, where Rockefeller has been convalescing, released the bird at dusk into a vast upstate open space with plenty of conifers for the owl to seek safety in.

The wildlife center shared footage of the release, showing the owl flee from a woman?s hand onto a nearby tree, before taking off again.

Workers discovered the feathered creature clinging for her life to the 75-foot-tall Norway spruce shortly after the tree was trucked into Manhattan on Nov. 14.

Adorable photos of the tiny bird wrapped in an orange sweater soon went viral on social media as the heartwarming tale 2020 needed. But wildlife experts previously told The Post that she would have endured a hellish journey to the big city and is lucky to have survived."

Ravensbeard Wildlife Ctr. Facebook page:
Rocky's release was a success! She is a tough little bird and we're happy to see her back in her natural habitat. We are sure that Rocky will feel your love and support through her journey south. #RockefellerOwl Please help us continue our mission to help birds like Rocky for years to come."

Snowy Owls on the Flyway
January 7, 2022

Watchers were thrilled to see two snowy owls on the Flyway yesterday, even if the owl interaction wasn’t friendly. What are snowy owls doing here and why did we see two of them so far from their home? Snowy Owls are nomadic and irruptive migrants and can appear almost anywhere, often in surprising abundance. But we think that their irruptive behavior is driven by a combination of food availability and an unusually successful nesting year.

I am going to go with more survival of young this season!
Snowys have actually been seen in - FLORIDA!   Probly born in New York ahahaha
