DN12 is definitely branching. Rewind to about 8:30 AM today.

Exploration of the Lower Ladder Branch, then a short wing hop to the Ladder Branch, the nest, walking to the lower deck and fly hopping back. So this youngster is using flight as much as walking now.  Very cool.  High hopes for a normal fledge in the next few days or weeks.

Zowie! No question, this was an intentional flight away from the nest. Seems early, at 70 days, and in previous years "normal" fledges are closer to June 21 or so at DNN and Decorah. But still, every best wish for safe survival for DN12. And we'll keep watching through the rain for sightings.

 ;D   :D   :-*   We're cheering for you DN12!

Congratulations to DNF and Mr North. You raised a super eagle who had an absolutely beautiful maiden flight. I watched it at least a dozen times, and it brings a smile to my face every time. Fly free and live long. It was an honor being able to watch this miracle. My thanks to all the moderators and the excellent camera operators with RRP. Empty nest syndrome feels much better this year in north Decorah

Raleigh, you got it just right. Empty nest syndrome can be a good feeling.

Excellent work from the camera operators who located DN12 in the Love Tree. That's to the left of the nest tree (as we are looking at it) where MrN and DNF hung out during the winter and mating season.

The DNN Branch ID map is very helpful. Scroll around on the nest watching site to find the map.

SEDs to all.

The cam ops appear to have an 'eyeball' on DN12 safely perched on the Love Branch.  :)

One of the parents have been trying to lure DN12 back to the nest with a fish. A lot of squeeing, but I guess DN12 isnt hungry enough to make that short trip back yet. Might be a little hesitant since the winds appear to be pretty strong yet.

Yes, I've seen the parent working at the nest today. They are devoted to this fledgling, and I am sure there will be a return to the nest when hunger gets strong enough.

Note close observation of cow below the branch early this morning.   ;D

Right on cue. Made a return to the nest for a snack, and then another beautiful flight off the nest. Already a pro.

Way to go, DN12! :D What a beautiful first flight! Happy to read of a return to the nest, too.  Thanks, all for the great pics and for the map, BL.

DN12 is now (5 PM CDT) perched on a log pile - fallen branches, I think across the stream.  Good to know there have been feedings.  All is well for now.

DN12 communing as the cows come home.   ;D

In the wide view, one of the parents is in a tree above. It's about 8:30 PM CDT.

Friday morning with DN12, starting 6:30-ish in the grass and on the dead tree.

Worth rewinding to about 10:30 AM CDT to watch red-winged blackbird harassing DN12 from one side of the field and stream to the other. With a really spectacular flight and glide across the field from nest side to far stream bank. What a flyer is DN12!
