Three chicks by 1:30 pm.  We are hoping to band them June 3rd, in the afternoon.  Obviously, with COVID-19 in play, we have developed a protocol that Mayo staff felt was appropriate and, pending any illness or significant changes in the virus, we plan on banding them.

From the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Now that our four falcons have hatched, we need your help naming them. You all are welcome to submit ideas to name the 2020 brood. Male and female names as well as gender-neutral suggestions will be accepted until 4 p.m. CDT on May 29. Send your suggestions to [email protected]

All four continue to do well, despite a 3 day age difference between the first 3 and last one.

Yep, right on time!  3 within 8 hours, the fourth not until 3 days later.  (s)he's a fighter!!  The staff need a little something positive right now, with all of the COVID stuff going on, and from what I hear, this is it!

By far, my favorite urban site i manage/band.

FYI, two of the four chicks have officially fledged with both making it back to the box, at least as of 9 am.  Nadya should leave by Tuesday.

Fantastic on the 2/4 fledges and both making it back.  What are their names?  I noticed you mentioned Nadya.  I like that.

The names are:  Annabelle, Glory, Oliver and Nadya.  Annabelle and Oliver were the first two to fledge, all four in box again this am.  So far, so good.

2 have fledged
June 23, 2020
Annabelle and Orville
Glory and Nadya

June 21 - At 7:30 am today, all 4 chicks were in the nest box, but by 10:00 am two of the chicks had fledged.  Annabelle and Orville were the two chicks to leave the nest box, and one of them later returned.
This photo, taken shortly after 10:00 a.m., shows Glory and Nadya still in the box, perhaps watching their brother and sister trying out their wings.

Orton, the male of Mayo Clinic?s nesting peregrine falcons, will be back in the air later this summer after he was found injured in downtown Rochester on Wednesday.  Someone spotted the raptor under a car and contacted wildlife rehabilitator Foxfeather Zenkova. Orton appeared to struggle trying to fly.

Orton and his mate, Hattie, live atop a Mayo Clinic building in a nest box. The pair had four chicks this year ? three females and a male. The four were banded June 3. The mother will have to provide for all four chicks on her own while Orton recovers from his injuries.

Orton was diagnosed with a broken keel ? the breast bone. His flight muscles are attached to the bone, which is why he was having difficulty flying.  ?He obviously collided with something.?

The bone should heal in about a month, and after that, rehabilitators will help him rebuild his flight muscles, she added.  ?We have every reason to believe he?s going to make a full recovery,? Arent said.

Arent advises people who find a raptor they believe is injured to contact a wildlife rehabilitator before moving it. The bird could be a fledgling that is not hurt, but instead is unable to competently fly.
