A falcon who was born at the Mayo Clinic in 2008 is now the resident female at the Washington University Medical School nest in St. Louis, Missouri.

From the Midwest Peregrine Society:

It isn't often that a peregrine will migrate much more than a couple hundred miles for future nesting (if they survive their natal year). However, we've just received word from Jeff at World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, MO that once again another MN bird has shown up in the state, and established herself as a nesting adult.

"Aurora" b/g *Y/*X, 2008 fledge from the renowned Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN is now nesting at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. From what we hear, she is quite the force to be dealt with and quite defensive. From natal to nesting territory, she flew ~450 miles south. This is another example of why peregrine falcons are "wandering falcons".

Just to let everyone know that the 2016 pair of falcons remained on territory all winter and have been confirmed again this past week.  The male is Orton, 2014 fledge from City Hall, Minneapolis and the female is 2015 fledge from the Mayo building, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis with bands b/r D/35.  This is the 30th year since peregrines were hacked on the campus, and we are planning many anniversary events.  Go to the Midwest Peregrine Society page, in addition to the link below to get notifications.

Just a heads up, that we had our first egg arrive a few minutes ago at the Mayo Clinic.  If things progress, and if she lays a full clutch of 4 eggs, we hope to band at the end of May.  Check out the cam for live information. 

We once again have the same pair as in 2016.

I wonder if some of the falcons are wandering a bit further looking for a place of their own with more of them around now.  She DOES look like a force to be reckonned with.

I wonder if some of the falcons are wandering a bit further looking for a place of their own with more of them around now.  She DOES look like a force to be reckonned with.   

Nora-I wouldn't necessarily believe that, but rather that it has something to do with genetics (some of the subspecies are more migratory than others) and individuality than "lack of suitable territory".  There are MANY cliffs and other suitable sites between Rochester and St. Louis that are appropriate/suitable for falcons to nest.

FYI- we had the second egg arrive Sunday late afternoon, and should expect #3 to arrive Tuesday/early Wednesday.

I was at the site this morning and confirmed that it appears we are staying at 3 eggs for the season.  Hatch should happen ~ May 7th.

Fyi-we are expecting hatch to happen within the next 24-48 hours.

We had our first hatch at Mayo Clinic overnight, and the second chick arrived in the early afternoon today.  This is perfect timing, just after celebrating our 30 year Anniversary with the clinic, patients and staff on Tuesday afternoon.  Over 150 attended the celebration, with lots of history, stories and just a great time in general.
