Bridge ... 33:54       87°  (3:46 pm)     It's a lovely day.  A few clouds off to the east, sunny and no wind.  Of course, now that I've said there's no wind, it'll come up within the next hour or so.

Hi you two ... and all that stop by here.  I hope that all is going well for you.

Cal ... It is good that you keep an eye on Maybe.  I know that you have Coyotes that come through your property.  She is lucky that she found you.  I live in the city and even we have to be aware that Coyotes live in our neighborhood, and cats are on the menu here, unfortunately.

Hi Joho.  Computers are such a blessing, but they can sure drive you crazy.  A couple of days ago, I turned my laptop on and there was no sound, and not only that, but it was telling me that there was no sound device installed!  I spent some time looking into settings and getting more upset about it - and almost got in touch with online help.  One of my daughters suggested that I 'restart' my laptop.  I did so and whatever was wrong with it was resolved.  ???  It was working fine.  Some kind of a crazy glitch ... I don't know ...

ack and a Bird First - UPDATE October 11, 2022

Jack eating grass
The big excitement of the day was getting called that Jack was spotted. We hurried to the spot and caught him eating clover, dandelion greens, and grass. His bad eye looks different with the yellow bulge on it.Jack eating clover
Eating clover
If anyone knows what that is, we’d like to know. It was good to see Jack and have him feel comfortable with us as he went about his life eating greens. We want him to come back to the WRI year after year. We’re estimating that he is 24 now. He is the favorite of many. We told him to stay safely out of sight for the next four days.

Here at the WRI, Pixie and her cubs are still coming.

Red-bellied woodpecker male
Male red-bellied woodpecker
A bit of excitement that paled with the call about Jack was seeing the first male red-bellied woodpecker in 29 years of keeping records on the WRI property. We saw only two others, both females, on May 22, 2003 and May 3, 2021. This was the first to have the full red crown and nape that says male. Red-bellied woodpeckers are common across the temperate forests of the eastern United States but are rare here in the Northwoods. I don’t know why they call it a “red-bellied” woodpecker when it’s only the head that’s really red. Maybe the name red-headed woodpecker was taken by then.

Thank you for all you do,

Sun Chairs ...  17:33      89°  (3:16 pm)   Sunny and almost cloudless at the moment.  No complaints from me.

Hi you two and anyone else that comes by here.  I hope all is well with you.

Cal, don't you just love dealing with someone that is too lazy to do their darned job?  They put you off so they can get away with doing less.  It will be interesting  when Jim goes with you.   I hope the dentist can fit you in soon.

6;11 finally got to it.  Nice puzzle.  Was a great day today until it wasn't.  Changed all of a sudden from warm and dry to downpour.
Right now in the middle of a high wind and heavy rain downpour.  Took car out to get it rinsed.  Got a little damp.  It is OK.  Going to bed soon.  Always sleep well when it is raining.
I was happy to see Tasha in the rock den.  I hope she sticks with it.
Gonna go now.  Tired.  GBU and GB Ukraine.

Lost my good post and time.  Time was less than six I recall.  Post was bragging about showing Dean Road Bridge and squirrel rescue spot to others.
I told also how I like random trips to small town restaurants, and seeing the struggles some families have trying to survive on their cooking and housekeeping skills.  One place even has the babies with them all day, and children helping out with tasks to keep them busy all day. They all looked happy and were very friendly.  I leave a good tip for them.  Joan taught me to be generous.  I miss her this morning as Winter nears.  She loved the quick trips as much as I.

A Pleasant Day, Ted, Jack, People, and More - UPDATE October 13, 2022

Crow
Midday, I got a call that an old friend was at the Bear Center. I wanted to see him, and I thought I’d also get to see another old friend, Ted
Ted
Ted. I headed out the door with my camera. There was a deer calmly looking at me making me feel like I was okay to be there. At the Bear Center, I found that Ted wanted to see me as much as I wanted to see him. He responded with his usual friendly high-pitched grunts, gave me a good shot of his face, and came to say ‘Hi’ through the fence. Nice to see him and my other friend at the same time. I liked the shot of Ted looking and saying hi from his shelter so much that I cropped it (click here) for a better look at his white hairs now at 25, I am told, which is a year older than I thought. I’m still learning.Red-bellied woodpecker
Red-bellied woodpecker

Back at the Wildlife Research Institute, a surprise was another look at the red-bellied woodpecker. He didn’t say this out loud, but I suspected he didn’t like the picture I took a couple days ago and wanted me to have one with a better look at his eye looking right at the camera.

Then he got scared away by two crows that landed close. The crows started to interact with each other. Then one noticed me and flew away fast, while the other looked at me and seemed to say, ‘Oh, he’s okay; he’s just clicking pictures again as usual.’ So, I clicked the camera while he was still looking with that thought in his head. Crows are generally very wary with ravens even more wary. In fact when I did no more than walk past a window, a flock of ravens at a feeder 67 feet away flew away en masse.Rusty blackbird
Rusty blackbird

For something new, a new group of corvids joined the Corvid Clean-up Crew—a flock of rusty blackbirds on their way south from their Canadian Boreal Forest summer range. One was good to fly past me and let the light catch his rusty head and neck that give him his name.

Jack eating grass
Jack eating grass
Word is that Jack was seen again this evening from 7:10 PM to 7:50 PM eating sunflower seed hearts and then turning to clover, dandelion leaves, and grass as he did a couple evenings ago. Jack’s eye revealed the depth of knowledge and interest among the people who read these updates. I saw one good response after another about the new yellow spot in his eye. As a result, I sent a close-up picture of his eye to a veterinarian who is an eye specialist for even more. Very thankful for the many people with hearts for bears and nature that the bears brought together back in 2010 and continuing today.

Once again, thank you for all you do.

5:11 on the donkey.
Deb and her friend are getting along I guess.  I mostly leave them alone.  I did see Deb and Boss last evening on my way to a spaghetti fund raiser.  Both were ok and glad to see me. Especially Boss.
Deb does not eat pasta.  So I did not see them for long. I was in a hurry.  They only serve from 4 to 6, and it was after 5:30 when I saw Debbie at her house.  I just made it. The dinner was at the Italian American Veterans club in Lorain, Ohio.  This was my first visit there.  Was OK.  Well organized, but not especially good.  Two tiny meat balls, too little pasta and too much sauce for my taste.  I have now tried it after many years of reading about it, and will not go back.
Cold start today.  I have been staying in to keep warm.  It is only 45 at 10 am.  I have to go get Covid booster at 3 pm.  Not sure what else I will do today.  Thinking about bundling up an going for a short bike ride this afternoon.  Probably will.
Nice to see Jack again.  Good Tasha and Ted still showing off for us on Bear.org.  Very nice update.
That is it for now.  CUL EV1.  GBU and GB Ukraine

Donkey ...  23:11     84°  (5:25 pm)   It was a beautiful day, and very heavily overcast.

Hi you two, I hope that all is well.

My daughter and I took my car through emissions testing this afternoon.  It passed.  Before testing, we took a drive out to a small town to the east of us that we have been watching grow for many years.  I hadn't been there for some time, since Larry passed and I am amazed at how well they are doing over there.  They have grown quite a bit.  Best of all, they have a small hospital not all that far from them now.

I agree Cal, it is sad and tragic what Putin has done to his own people too, and they don't know how to get ahold of him either.  It is true some are dreadful beasts that have come to the Ukraine, but not all.

Hi Joho.  I bet Boss misses you.

A New Look and a New Fox - UPDATE October 14, 2022

Red fox - photo by T. Hagenah
On this snowy, rainy, and sometimes sunny day, we have not yet seen a bear. The driveway had a beautiful new look coming in. Driveway
Deer in colorful, snowy driveway
Color, snow decorating branches, and deer hesitated to leave the driveway knowing that snow would fall on them from every branch they touched. In the snow I saw tracks of an animal I haven’t seen for many months. Then, a member of Team Forward here to work as usual, clicked the perfect picture of him with her cell phone—a beautiful red fox. Winter seems a little brighter with the possibility of a fox to spice things up in the absence of bears.

Thank you for all you do,

5:45
Not bad out today.  Was supposed to rain, but it missed me.  Now 50 degrees at 9:45.  I got long pants and long sleeve shirt on for now and the foreseeable future.  No snow.  Did not even get close to cold enough for snow yet.
Yes saw Boss he was happy.  Did get booster, but new people in my store.  Not very careful compared to the previous group.  Only one girl remaining from the group there a year ago.  She is good, but cannot carry the whole new squad of screwups.  For example I left my record of shots at home.  My bad.  Nowhere in the preregistering did they mention the card. So I felt their records would suffice, but NO.  The first thing they ask me for is my shot record.  Then she says, "we will make you a new one for today."  After I get the shot and sign off so they can get paid I still have no card.  So I asked the pharmacist to make one up for me.  When I get it I see I cannot readit.  I can make out the date though and "Covid" so I went home.  At home I found my old card with lots of Pfizzer shots listed.  I look at receipt, and it says Pfizer.  I look at card from Dr. it says Moderna. What the heck.  I called them up, and girl says card is wrong bring it back we will fix it.
I will find a new store.  It will be further to go, but in medicine accuracy counts.  "Close" or "similar" is not what I want.
I feel bad the good people are already gone, and this store has been  failing in so many ways for the last two years I have had enough.  For example they are often out of my 2% milk and Nickle's Italian bread, and these are the two most needed things I get there.
They built a new Discount Drugmart Store about 5 miles from me.  I will try it soon.  Now enough bitterness.  CUL EV1 GBU and GB Ukraine.
