cal... lol... I wonder how many of us know what ts means!  lol  I do!  lol    What a scary time for you and Scootie!  Is he ok?  Did Drama break the skin on his neck?  Poor ole boy!  I bet you're glad you were right there and not in the barn!!  It does sound like you need different meds for him.  Hope he's ok.  What a mess for Polly!  Why in the world would there be 300 people at the DMV??  Ours used to have waits like that and people always mad at the people working there, but a few years ago, they put a person out in the lobby and as soon as you walk in, they ask what you want and start the ball rolling for you right there.  Then they send you to a different desk, the one that you need, and not to someone who can't help you.  It has really, really helped with wait times.  If you need a new license, you don't have to wait with the people who need to transfer plates from one car to the other, and stuff like that.

Braveheart with one of her cubs.

I feel lousy this morning and I do not know why.

cal, you don't have to stop  putting puzzles in circles.  I just have to learn to do better in them.

I thought I had to go to the cardiologist this morning for an echogram.  No real problem just a routine checkup. And then I realized this is not Friday, it is Thursday so I  do not go to the cardiologist until tomorrow. Like I said, I am not well this morning.

I hope you all are tip-top and can enjoy this Thursday, I'm going back to bed.

Daily Updates
Mysteries Solved, Corrections Due - UPDATE June 1, 2016
01 June 2016
Print Email
I spoke too soon about RC and Jewel being here. I didn?t personally see RC, and Jewel looks a lot like the bear that was here in the dark a couple nights ago. Ted
Ted
Mike stayed over last night and cleared everything up. The mother with four cubs is Samantha (Braveheart?s 7-year-old daughter). We haven?t seen her for about a year, but it is her. Mike even got good enough looks at the cubs through the windows to say they are two males and two females. But we know how we?ve gotten cubs wrong on that before as they switched places faster than we could keep up with. I suspect he is right but we?ll recheck until we?re totally sure.

I?m still looking for an opportunity to see how Jewel?s wound on her left side has healed.

So we have Samantha with 4 cubs, Jewel with 3, and Sophie with 2. We have yet to see 17-year-old RC to see how many cubs she has. Her last 6 litters have all been 3.

It looks like we?ll have a lot of cubs visiting this summer. A goal for the Bear Courses is to give the best bear experiences possible as participants learn about bears in ways they?ll never forget. No expert will be able to tell them otherwise, because each will have his or her personal experiences.

Bear Curator Sharon Herrell posted a detailed report on the Bear Center bears.

Bear News - June 1, 2016
Memorial weekend moved through quickly. The rain on Saturday and Sunday brought folks to the center in big numbers. We did two Behind The Scene tours every hour both days.

Tuesday, we had our annual visit from Virginia Minnesota?s first grade class. The teachers remain the same but the students are always new. As the population fluctuates, the number of students does too. This year we had 125, last year we had 160 students. So how do we handle this many children? Very carefully and very organized. Their questions, bright faces and innocence of bear knowledge is very precious. One of the children told our intern, "we saw you on the cam". It means a great deal to us to share our experiences with them but to also realize how many watch the cams.

On Friday we put fresh cedar out for the bears. Ted enjoyed the first roll in the cedar for the year. We?ve noticed yesterday that Ted is in need of additional time to relax. He is currently on Deramaxx for arthritis, and if he needs it he will get Tramodol for pain. We are watching him closely. His pads have some on and off swelling. We have talked to Dr. Petersen, she is aware of the swelling and will monitor him.

Holly gave us a look as she was leaving the mound area. She is quite a hoot. She and Lucky played in the cedar trees just to the left of the mound area. Play has been high on Lucky and Holly's "to do list". They have been seen playing together in the pond, on the mound, and in the cub tree. Spontaneous play is always a useful tool for visitors to see. They realize that the bears do not hurt each other and they do not generally vocalize while they are playing; unless Lucky gets too rough with Holly.

Lucky took the opportunity to take a brief nap while his den was being cleaned. At times he has supervised the efforts of the interns and Bear Eds that cleaned for him.

Thank you to all for making our bears, happy bears.

Sharon Herrell, Bear Curator

Thank you Sharon and thank you all for all you do.

......An Afterword - those (&$%& circles.
:D :D I shouldn't laugh JP, but your afterword tickled me for some reason.  We all have those times.  :)

My sister has been ok as far as flooding.  Lots of rain, but she's what I think is considered west central or west?  She's about 16 miles NW of San Angelo.

RA "Maybe it needs some extra Miracle Grow."  Don't kill it!!

JP that picture of Braveheart and cub nose to nose is neat.  Good luck with your test Friday.

Off to see about the dog blowing of steam  :D

Bow

I was up late as the Marlins game went into the 12th inning where they won by a walk-off  double by their young left fielder.  They took 3 of 4 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

My echogram today then, hopefully, a quiet weekend.

Wishes for all,

Daily Updates
Lily, Donna, Lucky, Holly - UPDATE June 2, 2016
02 June 2016

Today, I was delighted to see Lily close-up and touch her for the first time this year. She was relaxed. Then something caught her interest and she was off stomp-walking, Beautiful Lily
Beautiful Lily
watching, listening, and smelling the ground and branches as if something was afoot. She looked like she was following a trail as she disappeared. Sometimes, females track down males, and it is that time of year. But maybe she was wanting to run off a competing female. Hard to read their minds.

Lily follows a scent

One of Donna?s three yearlings had a rough couple days between getting injured and going through family break-up. Yesterday, about 4 PM, a bear tried to drag him down from a tree by the right hind foot. After some angry bear noises, the bear let go. The observer had a hard time seeing what was happening in the rain back in the woods, so we?re not sure if Donna was making the angry noises or not. About 9:15 PM, the little male was walking on three legs with his family. Today, the yearlings were on their own by 6:30 PM and he was walking lightly on the foot, so it must be on the mend. Heal soon, little guy. Donna still had four yearlings last fall. We don?t know what happened to one of them to be down to three.

At the Bear Center, Lucky is being persistent with Holly as captured by a Lily Fan at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibdY7F8VsuE

Today, I heard of the first sighting of a tiny fawn in tow behind a doe. I think of June 1 as the average birth date for deer around here.

I thank the local residents for keeping us informed.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies!  So hot here!

cal... Beautiful pics of Lily today in the update!  So cool Dr. Rogers gets to touch her.  I wonder if he still has to say "it's me bear."  Almost all done getting ready for vacation!  Just last minute stuff to do in the morning.  Supposed to leave around 7am.  Yawn!  I hope I don't have to drive very much... I hate driving.  I just got my beachy toenails done... sparkly turquoise!  lol  SO not me, but very pretty in the FL sun and sand!   :D  I wonder if Handsome and Lily will miss me... this is only the second time I've left Handsome for so long, Lily is used to it, even though I haven't done it in a couple of years.  Oldest grand didn't have school yesterday, and she had to work, so I went up the mountain and got her and took her.  First time I've been there in quite awhile!  My laptop is still acting up.  Yesterday it wouldn't do anything!  Just turn on, that's it.  No going to the internet or anything!  My phone would, so I knew it was this thing again.

JP... Hope your echogram went well and no problems!

Hi everyone!  I'm waving!  Hope all are well!
