Daily Updates
Holly and Lucky Acting Wild, 2017 Calendar - UPDATE May 24, 2016
24 May 2016
Print Email
Just like wild bears are doing these days, Holly and Lucky broke down an aspen sapling and stripped the leaves. They did it where the PTZ camera could give a good view. Yearling
Yearling
They knew it was good bear food even though they were not taught by a mother. I?ve never seen a better video of a bear stripping leaves like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp739mLLqSs.

Bear.Org discusses this at http://www.bear.org/website/bear-pages/black-bear/basic-bear-facts/36-skull-of-a-black-bear.html, saying, ?The premolars are the four teeth behind each canine tooth. Usually the 2nd and 3rd premolars on the bottom jaw are missing, leaving a space (diastema) like herbivores have. Moose use their diastema to strip leaves off branches as they draw the branches sideways through it. Black bears use it the same way when eating young leaves in spring.?

Curator Sharon Herrell has more pictures and stories about Ted, Lucky, and Holly, in her weekly Bear News article on the North American Bear Center Facebook page at
https://www.facebook.com/NorthAmericanBearCenter/posts/580352768801084.

It is a beautiful day with little wind, nice clouds, and the temperature in the mid 70?s. The view is punctuated with chokecherry blossoms. If all the blossoms turn into cherries, it will be a good crop for the bears.

Hummingbird at feeder
Hummingbird at feeder
The day started with a pair of yearlings, obviously on their own, moving quickly through the yard without pausing to eat. Yearlings usually separate from each other at family break-up, but not always. I didn?t get a good enough look to say who they are. I?d like to know to determine their sexes to better understand their sticking together. Yearling females tend to become competitors after family break-up because they will be vying for territories.

Woods Lake
Woods Lake
June and her brother Willy paired up from time to time after family break-up back in 2002, as did Hazel and Willy, but June and Hazel were more at odds. Surprisingly, in a way, most of the yearlings that pair up to play after family break-up are not siblings. They are from different litters.

This guardian male ruby-throated hummingbird perched 8 feet away did not give chase when this female came to the feeder.

Linda Gibson did her usual great job on the 2017 Calendar?Bears of North America. Beautifully designed and full of information, she did an amazing job going through thousands of bear photographs buried in my files to select a variety to represent, black, polar, and brown/grizzly bears. The cover is Gerry, who Linda picked because she knew how close we were and how this bear is loved by my entire family. Living at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, Gerry is now 27 years old. Linda is not one to skimp on pictures?144 total. (Click here to see a full resolution sample page) The calendar carries a lot of memories for me. Each picture has a story behind it. Some are of the bears we all know, including the ambassador bears (plus their stories). Some hold other exciting memories from my time with brown bears and polar bears. But with all the time I?ve spent with these three species, I can say I have never felt truly threatened and have never had a serious problem. My only calendar ever, it will be a keepsake. Thank you Linda.

You can purchase the 2017 Calendar in our gift shop at the NABC or online by clicking on this link: http://www.bear.org/website/gift-shop-pages/product/12187-2017-bears-of-north-america-calendar.html.

Thank you all for all you do.

Good morning jewelies! It is 66 here and some rain heading for here. Threw me off seeing the 2017 calendars already. Have to get a couple of them. The hummers are beautiful.

Hi JP! Thanks for the pic of Bow! Sounds like it went really good at the doctor! Now hoping you will pain free for awhile. Did the marlins play last night? Royals did and we won again 7-4. We should of even with some players out cause the MN twins really playing bad. their record is 11-34. But they almost got it tied up in the ninth bases loaded no one out wade davis came in and got the three outs.   Hope you have a good day today i got lots to do. horse trimmer coming at 11 to do the girls and they need it too. jim put in an ac and i got alot of paper work warranty and stuff to work on today. need to go to walmart and the bank and by missy's clinic in a bit.

Hi D! i let the girls back out yesterday and left the door open till awhile ago. i saw rain down in the city not here yet. They don't know. say it will rain but not here. not complaining just saying they don't know. That tornado looks so mean. Bei Bei is just so cute..can't stands it! Missy has that net flix she uses her phone for the connection for it but i said do you get the news hgtv and bravo she also has dish i guess for the regular stuff but i don't think she gets hgtv or bravo and i said oh i got to have them channel. i don't watch a ton of tv few shows at night and the royals and then wildcats and chiefs.

Hi Obsver! You can gag me with a spoon not your spoon my own spoon with them biscuits and gravy. ick.. strawberry jelly on my biscuit. Now i think that cat is a girl. saw a big yellow cat yesterday but it took off jim has seen it down at his barn and going to get my mail driving down the driveway saw a black cat and it turned around and went across the road. so i don't know if i can catch this cat in my barn but better try and have to come up with 140.00 to have pete spay her. must be the new people across the street have not seen these cats till they moved in. i finished my book and just so good.

Hi Ra! I thought that too on the dog shame good enough for you hunting poor ducks!! not the dogs fault too bad he was not sprayed! i thought cicadas come every 17 years too. at the old house had this big pond and it was their year and tons of them in the water i would spend most of the day fishing them out. i thought only get to come every 17 years didn't want them to lose their lives like that you know.

Hi Nora! Them storm chasers really brave or really stupid. Teri said they had a deal in joplin last week remembering the like 161 people that died in that huge i mean huge tornado there. i will never forget going down there to see her afterwards and she drove me around and the stuff just flatten gone. her shop jay's office the huge hospital and how quiet it was cause did not see any birds.

I got to get hi to all you guys!

Hi Jewelies! Crow had his wrist surgery this morning. We had to be at the surgery center at 6:30 because he was the first on the schedule! Yay! We were home by 9:30. The nerve damage wasn't as extensive as the doctor had thought so no cast or sling was needed. He has been asleep since we got home. Hope this fixes his hand problem!

Cal, I got a 2017 calendar in the mail the other day from Defenders of Wildlife. I thought it was odd to send the calendars out this early but apparently it's not! Lol! I put the calendar away and hope I remember where I put it at the end of the year! I was reading in my Wonderful West Virginia magazine all about  the 17 year cicadas. Did you know that after they mate and lay eggs they only live 4 to 6 weeks! They spend 17 years underground, emerge, mate and die!  We used to call them locust but now we know they are really periodical cicadas! So far around here they aren't so bad, in fact I haven't seen or heard any. But boy they were abundant at my grandma's cemetery about 50 miles north east of here! They were talking on my local news about that huge tornado in Joplin and all the lives that were lost. How sad and scary.

Jp, we had to get up at 5:30 this morning! Boy were the birds singing! So far I'm not tired yet! Bet I have no problem going to sleep tonight! Glad the pain shot is working! Great pic of Bow!

Obsver, you would probably gag at Crow's breakfast plate at Bob Evans! He crumbles up the biscuit and then piles on hash browns, scrambled egg, apple butter and smothers it all with the whole cup of sausage gravy! He eats his extra crispy bacon on the side! Lol!

Ra, Blindspot was a shocker wasn't it?  I saw on Live with Kelly this morning that the deaf guy won DWTS! I quit watching several years ago when Bristol Palin was on!Lol!  Lowes and Home Depot are still getting plants so hopefully there will be some lantana in a delivery!

Dlong, Robin and Crow are both Netflix fans. Neither of them watch much what I call regular tv. They know nothing about Blacklist, Blindspot, NCIS or any of the shows I love! Crow does watch regular tv shows like Turn, American Pickers and of course sports! Like I was saying the other day...cancelling cable cut Robin's cable bill by $100 a month. Now she only has internet with the cable company. Even while she was cancelling the cable they were trying to get her to add phone or upgrade her Internet! That tornado pic is frightening!

Nora, those storm chasers are crazy! I would be scared to death!

The more I watch the storm chasers the more I don't think they are nuts. not the good ones anyway.  Over the years a lot has been learned you can't get off radar besides the fact that radar can't show tornadoes on the ground, just possibles.  They normally put safety first and will make sure they look at maps and have escape routes figured out in case they have to beat it out of where they are.  If a tornado hits buildings and they are in the area they will stop and help with rescues or search and rescue.  The good ones figure if they're chasing a funnel and someone needs help, the chase is done and help.

I was a bit disappointed looking at the bear calendar.  I guess I always thought it was all bears from the Bear Center, but polar bear for one?  They have so many bears and cubs around there it seems like they would have plenty to use.

Joe got the main part of his sling off yesterday.  There was a big padded deal that went between the sling and his side that is now off and he doesn't have to wear the actual sling unless we go somewhere.  I imagine for a while it might feel good sometimes being he hasn't had the weight of his arm hanging from there things got fixed, but the doctor said a lot of why he should wear it is a "stop" for someone that might come up and go "how you been" and hit his shoulder, hug, whatever.  He has an exercise to do.  He was given a sheet with several on it and the doctor had marked the first one.  When Joe was looking at it the doctor said "now don't be reading the others on there, JUST pay attention to the first one I marked."  :D  He goes back June 29th.

I, yes me, really overslept today!  Must have needed it I guess.  Had a few rain showers come through with thunder/lightning this morning and earlier this afternoon, probably will again looking to the south just now.

Off to check the bear mom puzzle, thanks Cal.

hi nora! i know that padded deal joe was wearing between him and the sling. i got to take that off but had to wear that sling for i dont remember like six more weeks but was better with that deal off. my doctor told me the same for keeping people from hitting hugging you. i had my surgery six days before christmas went to boobies christmas eve and that year stopped by jims parents they live close to there. so had the big sling that padded deal was in some pain. his sisters husband mom there. everyone knew i had the surgery. when we left jim took the gifts to our truck and tims mom went and hugged me really hard! i started bawling cause it hurt so bad. his dad was shocked she did that jim blew up. but she was really old i told jim let it go but my doctor was ticked off too. she died the next year.

hi rues! so happy mr crow did good! yay no cast! i knew that about them cicidas. that is why i worked so hard to save them to wait for seventeen years to live a short life did not want them to drown in my pond.  mr crows breakfast sounds like what jim would get i never watch him eat. i hear him like listening to the dogs eat!  tell me where you put your calendar i will try to remember for you! :D girls did good today with steve horse trimmer. rose she was moving around but i was on one side steve on the other. he started to grab her halter and stopped i told rose is good she never pulls when you get her halter and she didnt. she is bossy to soda but a pretty good horse. told sister i would like to put tucos saddle on her and try to ride her. sister got scared did not want me to do that. jim dont either. afraid i will fall bust my hip. go down hill like mom. boo boo knocked me down earlier and i fell backwards but fell in this huge dog bed and augie was in it!  :D my mom loved the flowers at lowes.

Hi Jewelies!  Hot here today.  When I got home, I got all my potted flowers and put them on my front porch.  I had asked the catsitter if she would water them if I put them together on the porch and she said she would.  I figure that if I do it more than a week early, it won't look so suspicious when I go on vacation.  I found out this morning what a bad mama I am... When I get up, the first thing I do is feed the cats.  This morning, Lily came in the kitchen, but no Handsome.  I called and called, looked high and low, but no Handsome.  I went outside and called, no Handsome.  I finally decided I better get ready for work, and I heard him scratch the back door!!  He must have slipped outside when I came from watering last night.  I felt so bad!!  He chewed me out big time!

Nora... The calendars are different every year.  In 2015, it was Shadow's clan.  In 2014, it was the cubs in Shadow's clan, and you know that this year is the center bears.  Glad Joe has passed to his next step in his recovery!

cal... I had forgotten about that woman hugging you!  I remember now that you told us about it.  Dumb lady.  Did Augie bite you when you fell on him today?   :o  That darn Drama better settle down!  lol  Good idea for rues to tell you where she puts the calendar!  You remember a lot of stuff that I can't keep track of!  When do you think was the last time Susie rode Rose?

rues...  Glad Crow's surgery wasn't as bad as it could have been.  Did he wake up yet?  I wonder if the cicadas come out the same year in all the states.  I haven't seen any at my house either, that's why I was wondering.  Down here they make jewelry out of their wings when they find them dead.  I found a weird caterpillar on my porch today... it was brown and tan stripes, had horns, and two red bow tie looking markings across its "shoulders".  I tried looking for it on the internet, but got grossed out and had to quit looking at them!  lol  I didn't kill it, but relocated it.  lol

JP... Glad you don't have to go back to the pain doc!

Time to find some supper.  Hi to all!

hi ra! me and sister playing our game. gracie who is a giraff the fashion queen when she comes to our town gives us a fashion check. if we pass she gives us something and pass us four times she will honor us by opening up a store. never know when she is coming. buy clothes at the store and shoes and hats and stuff. so she came today! third time. my theme was official. i tried one outfit she did not like it tried another and passed! thank goodness that is over. only one more visit and if i pass she will open her high dollar store. then all my neighbors will go and gripe about her high prices! poor handsome! i bet he did tell you off! lol no augie did not do anything when i fell on him. i told him i am sorry doodle! petted and kissed him. you know ra i am not sure when susie rode rose. know not for the last four years for sure.  the problem for me would be soda. her being blind out in the pasture running around looking for us upset rose if i rode in the hay field soda be crying her eyes out for rose. roxie would have a fit too.  she may try to buck around us. i dont know if rose would dump me to get back to them a d the barn. rose and roxie love that barn soda will go out on her own but then go back in it. yes your right on the bear calendars theme each year and this time the center all bears. your caterpillar sounds cool looking!

hi jp! royals lost today to the twins. the twins who are 12-34. hope we do better this weekend with the first place white sox

Cal, I put the calendar in my desk! Lol! By the end of the year, I'm pretty sure I will have stacked a bunch junk on top of it! I don't use that desk much so it becomes a place to put junk in and shut the drawer and forget it!  Sounds like Soda wouldn't be happy if you rode Rose! Probably best that not try to ride her...wouldn't want you to fall and really injure yourself! Your game sounds like a lot of fun! I used to do a lot of those hidden object puzzles online. Don't know why I stopped! Lol! We took Boo to the vet last week to get his hard macaroni like nails trimmed. He refused to go with the tech back to the area where they trim the nails. So I had to go with him. He is such a big baby! They raised the nail trimming to $12! How much does it cost for horses? At least Steve makes house calls!

Ra, Crow slept till 3:00! Then he kept asking me what time we got home. I told him several times we got home around 9:30. Lol! He seems ok now. I'm dead tired and ready to go to bed but I bet he will be up half the night. Concerning the cicadas... the magazine article had a map that showed only half the state having the cicadas this year. It didn't mention other states. I didn't know you could make jewelry with the wings! How cool! That sounds like one awesome looking caterpillar! Glad you relocated it. Who knows it could become a pretty butterfly! Poor Handsome! Wonder where he slept last night?

I can't stay awake another minute! Night Jewelies!

Nite rues! steve charges 25.00 a piece to do the girls nails!  give him an extra 10.00 every time. he is cheap compare to others i heard about. they charge as much as 50.00 a horse. and i really like steve always liked his dad too when he did it. he is really gentle with them. yes he makes house calls. listen the only way augie ever had his nails done was when ed tutored him and had to give twice the knock out dose cause augie so mean there. them girls two of them working really fast on his nails while he was knocked out. ed told them he is not going to wake up but they were scared. the boys nails have never looked that nice since. when he is in a dead sleep i sneaked up and clip one of them long nails! i finally get them all but it is a hurry thing you know. so leave poor little boo alone!! :D if you can't find your calendar i will tell you clean off your desk and you will find it! happy mr crow is doing good.  me going to bed too.

This is Guy.  Doesn't he look as if he is at a lunchroom counter waiting to place his order?

I am out of it this morning.  Just struggling to get started.  I read all the posts but am not sure I remember what I read.  I'll redo when I get more stable.

Hope all are well and that your day runs smoothly.

Good morning jewelies! It is 66 here and storming! I woke up at 3:30 and saw a weather deal go across the top of my tv. i got up and got dresses got my grain and dry cat food for that cat and the raccoons and went out and yelled for the girls lighting everywhere i did not shut the barn door last night. weather people been wrong all week. i went in and there they were. already in and raccoon waiting for me and my cat ran in behind me.  only one dog got up and went out and that was boo boo. he really had to go and came right back in. others still asleep on my bed.

Hi JP! lol yes that Guy does look like he waiting at the counter to place his order. wonder what he ordered. love the good morning. i am a little bleary eyed myself right now. i usually lay in bed and watch some of the world news and kinda get woke up. i just got up.
