Cal, Robin was heartbroken over Prince's death! She loved his music. I remember her playing his tape over and over when she was a kid. When she was living in California, going to law school, she saw him perform at a club along with LL Cool J. She has this bucket list of things to do and seeing him perform again was at the top of the list. She even bought a purple velvety long dress to wear to the concert! I couldn't believe he was 57!  Glad your iPad is ok! I must not read your posts right! Lol! Wonderful bear pics today! Hope the meds help Honey to feel better

Ra, omg, pharmacists aren't supposed to make mistakes! Good grief, someone wasn't paying attention to what they were doing! We need rain, too. Been waiting for it to come all day. Now they say it will be here overnight. I had to come in and take a shower after I finished mowing and trimming because I had so much dust on me. My hair felt  gritty! Lol!  No egg for Robin! They make her gag! Funny thing though, she loves deviled eggs! Hates mayo and eggs but still loves deviled eggs! What a kook!

Neva, I hate to learn all that stuff with a new computer! But I'm sure I'll get the hang of it! I think mine is a Windows 10 but I'd better check! My old one is a 7, I do know that! Lol!

Blschue, Susie was beautiful! She sure had a mix of breeds in her!

Hi Jp, Obsver and Nora!

Daily Updates
Honey, Gull - UPDATE April 21, 2016
21 April 2016
Print Email
Honey may have more than unshed foot pads. Curator Sharon Herrell gave Honey her doses of Prednisone and Tremadol today and will do the same tomorrow morning. Honey on 9-23-15
Honey on 9-23-15, also an upper wall photo
The veterinarian is hoping to see improvement tomorrow afternoon.

Out the window at the WRI, the trusting herring gull from last year needs to meet more people. At ocean beaches, people tell of gulls that will take food from anyone who offers it, flying down and plucking it from a hand while in flight. The gull here hasn?t seen enough people to generalize like that yet. I want the gull to interact with anyone, including Bear Course participants, in that location. I feel good when the gull shows trust and carefully plucks the bologna without getting fingers. Today, I learned that getting fingers is not bad, either?no pain, no mark. Judy Thon stopped by. I wondered how the gull would react if she acted exactly like me. She went out the door with a half slice of bologna in her fingers, extending her arm toward the gull, walking slowly. The gull flew away when she stepped out the door. She went inside. It circled back and landed. She tried again. Same story. I tried. It started toward me as I came quickly to it, but then it retreated and began clucking. Judy told me what happened. The gull retreated when it saw her standing in the door window. When she moved out of sight, the gull came as usual. The gull left. Another one landed, but this one immediately flew when I started out the door with bologna as I did for the other one. It flew away several times before I gave up and resumed writing captions for upper wall pictures. The trusting gull also started slowly and has come a long way. We?ll see how long it takes for the trusting gull to generalize to everyone who comes out that door.

I heard that the remaining ice on the lakes disappeared on this sunny day in the mid-fifties. At the feeders, no redpolls came today. Many purple finches and pine siskins were here instead. No bears here yet.

Thank you for all you do.

Wow it's been that long since Faith was born!!  Seems like yesterday.

blschue - diet pills instead of an antibiotic!!!  I only worked in medical records for years, but even with that we had to be super careful the lab slips or other reports didn't get on the wrong chart, but pharmacists could kill someone  :-\  Awww Susie was a neat looking dog!

Sunny and really cool today.  It made it up to 53 so far, but cold north wind.

Hi Dlong! Sorry you are having such a bad time right now. Hope you feel better soon. I'm hoping you are right about Elizabeth. The show just wouldn't be the same without her!

Cal, thanks for forwarding D's email! What a shame that you didn't get to see Prince in concert. A gal I worked with at the phone company was a huge Elvis fan. She was crazy about him. Finally she and her friend got tickets to go see him in concert. I remember her being so giddy and excited about going. But he died before she got to see him. She was devastated. I'm happy that I got to see Paul McCartney with Linda and Wings. Something I'll never forget.  Tomorrow is Hyacinth day! Boy, seems like the weeks are flying by!

Blschue, yikes, a bug in your mouth! :o Glad you didn't swallow it! :D Diet pills for an ear infection! That was a major mistake!

Jp, I love the pic of Faith!

Hi Nora! Hope Joe is doing well!

I am not up to par for the last couple of days.  Can't pin it down, I just feel blah.

I do greet you all and wish you a good day in every respect.

Daily Updates
Bears, Beavers, and Birds - UPDATE April 22, 2016
22 April 2016
Print Email
I don?t know what is causing Honey?s problem. The latest talk is sedating Honey on Monday for a thorough exam. Scott, Sharon, Cindy, and I looked at her today. Beaver swimming
Beaver swimming
Honey didn?t notice when Scott touched her swollen left hind foot but responded normally to his touching her right hind foot. Ted was at his fence a few feet away giving his friendly high-pitched grunts. All we can do is give Honey her meds and wait for the head vet to get back on Monday.

Scott and Sharon let Lucky and Holly out to play and explore, which they did. They played in the big white pine cub tree. They swam in the pond. Lucky washed his face, even behind his ears as captured by a Lily Fan in this 6-minute video https://youtu.be/edrJX9worWA.

Beaver slapping
Beaver slapping
Back at the WRI, the outdoor microphone picked up a beaver slapping its tail a little before 7 PM. It was still light, so I grabbed my camera and zipped down to Woods Lake, stopping a few seconds to snap a deer that was ignoring me as I walked past. He was eating the nice green grass coming up next to the dead red pine top Lily Fan volunteers brought down last fall. The beaver continued slapping and diving, resurfacing, and slapping again. He was far out on the lake. I tried an old trick. I splashed the water, too. He came.

Back at my desk, a white-throated sparrow male in full breeding plumage came to the feeder?the first one in breeding plumage I?ve seen this year.

Beaver diving

Earlier today, the trusting gull came but wasn?t so trusting. I had my red hat and jacket on. Overall, I must have looked familiar enough that it didn?t fly, but it wouldn?t come. It just stood three feet away and clucked nervously. I went in and took off the red. I came out with no hat and my familiar black, long-sleeved Bear Center T-shirt. It came immediately and repeatedly and didn?t mind fast movements. Maybe we have to have Bear Course participants wear black if they want to interact with the gull. I have a half dozen clean black t-shirts big enough to fit almost anyone.

More on birds, a really nice nesting loon exhibit is in the works for the Ecology Hall.

Deer

No bears yet.

I hope Honey improves with her meds the next couple days. I don?t know what more we can do. We hope the veterinarians can figure it out soon.

Thank you for all you do.
