Daily Updates
Personalities - UPDATE April 11, 2016
11

Thinking of bear personalities, bears show more expression than they are usually given credit for. It?s true Guy the bear
Guy the bear
they don?t wag their tail. They don?t snarl and show their teeth like cats and dogs do. They don?t have the vocal repertoire that ravens do with their multiple syrinxes. But by meeting the bears in this area and spending time up close with them, the different personalities are recognizable to everyone.

Calm Jack doesn?t think twice about someone trying to find his pulse on his chest or in his groin (femoral artery) or pulling some hairs for DNA analysis. More nervous bears would wonder what we?re doing. Jack has been coming here since before 2003. Calm as he is, we never hear of him being seen out in the woods. He visits a few community feeding stations and knows exactly where to go to be safe.

Nervous Shadow has had much longer to get over her fear at feeding stations but can?t seem to do it. At 29 this year, she is not easy to approach. Mostly, she patrols the shadows, which led to her name. When she has cubs, she is looking for bears to chase off. She is easily recognizable with her now gray face.

Guy the Bear
Same Guy, different expression
Lily is very accepting of people she knows, especially at feeding stations, but she is often hard to approach in the woods.

Big V-Dot, with his sad eyes, is 15-20 years old and has been coming around for many years. He is timid around people but getting more relaxed in familiar situations.

Big Harry has a long history of seeing us with June. Over the years, he has gradually become more accepting of us.

Guy is in his mid-teens and has always been bold, which only means he feels confident. He has become calm, patient, and laid back and can look bored and almost morose or can look excited and happy as in the two pictures. He is playful with the other bears and trusting of people.

Then there are all the females you already know a bit about. Seeing them with cubs brings out more of their personalities, and the cubs themselves have their own personalities. Who can forget Hope and her younger sister Faith who grew up with a desire to play, perhaps instilled by the raucous play that she experienced early on in the den and out with playful Hope. We look forward to seeing Faith, Fern, Sophie, Lily, Jewel, Donna, Braveheart, Ursula, Bow, and the other females.

The amazing thing in all of of this is how different these bears who know people are from what most people believe. They don?t go around seeking food from people. They expect food at the feeding stations and have varying degrees of caution while at the feeding stations. Some are quick to settle down and accept people. Shadow doesn?t seem to have that in her. Siblings differ. Whiteheart was quick to accept a person walking with her and ignoring them while they did. Her sibling Blackheart never was a bear we could accompany.

June was a bear we could walk with in the woods from the first time we met her in 2004. That?s what made her such a valuable study bear. Her sibling Hazel was very accepting of people at feeding stations though I never saw her out in the woods, except in a den.

We don?t know of any of these bears behaving the way some authorities claim they should. I haven?t heard of any of them going around approaching people for food like the DNR claimed over and over to the media but could not come up with a single witness to verify that in court.

I look forward to seeing Jack, Burt, Guy, and some of the other bears that defy the common beliefs. I know there are many people across the country who feed bears and get to know the truth about them. I look forward to people learning directly from the bears here this summer. Only eleven spots are left in the Black Bear Field Courses at http://www.bearstudy.org/website/field-study-courses.html where the best teachers are recognized by their black cloaks of fur. Of the $2,500, $2,350 is tax deductible.

Thank you for all you do.

cal, they got the 8 runs with consecutive hits.  One was a 2 run homer.  The Marlins are capable of that sort of situation if they just get their act together.  They had it together last night.

I did that poem puzzle in 10:37.  You know I am not good at circles.

Hi guys, we're at 46 this noon, but feels so much warmer than that with the sun and not having that wicked WNW wind we had yesterday.  Chester and I got more than a mile in this morning.

Bet Jack was really enjoying sunning on the deck.

You could say that this is a Lucky bear.

Late night last night but worth it as the Marlins squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Mets.  It was in the 40s with a strong wind so 30 something chill factor.  Afternoon game today.

cal, I liked the pictures of Guy in yesterday's update, sitting there with his arms folded.

Let us all have a great Wednesday.  It doesn't cost us any extra money to do that.

Daily Updates
Volunteers Rock Tomorrow - UPDATE April 12, 2016
12 April 2016

Tomorrow, as part of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we celebrate the powerful team of volunteers Lily at her den - 3/24/10
Lily at her den - 3/24/10
who do so much to carry out our mission for bears. Go to bear.org, the Live Cameras tab, and scroll down and click on Special Events. Every hour on the hour from 8 until 2 PM, there will be a 10-minute broadcast on a different topic about the volunteers. Donna and I get to be part of the 9 AM broadcast (bear time). As volunteers ourselves, Donna and I feel appreciated, and we feel deep appreciation to be part of such a wonderful mission for bears.

There is trouble on the internet, not within our system; but some worldwide connections are not being made and are leaving some people unable to connect to bear.org or connect with emails. I hope it is fixed by tomorrow.

Today was a day working on pictures for the upper walls. Two pictures of Lily that brought back memories had to be included here. One shows Lily emerging from the den that contained 2-month-old Hope. For the other, Lily sat where the light showed the details of her fur and completely ignored me as I lay down a few feet away and clicked. Lily listening - 5/23/14
Lily listening - 5/23/14
She was listening to something and holding her mouth slightly open to use her vomeronasal organ. I look forward to seeing her this summer and perhaps see which male she pairs with this year. At this moment, she is undoubtedly in her den with her three yearlings Frankie, Francis, and Frannie that will leave her when she is ready to mate in late May.

Speaking of bears at dens, a video popped up and started playing that showed a den scene from 2002 with Blackheart and her newborn cubs Braveheart, Valiant, and Shylow. The BBC was there, so we had some extra technology to let us see Blackheart?s cubs as in this 3-minute clip.

Volunteer WeekOut the window, chipmunks are coming to the table, so to speak, filling their cheeks with sunflower seed hearts to store in their burrows. I suspect newborn chipmunks will share them before they emerge 3/4 grown.

Snow is melting as temperatures shift to above average, 48?F today.

Thank you volunteers and thank you Lily Fans for all you do.

Rues -- " I never thought anyone in the family killed the child. I always thought it was an intruder"  The one thing that always bothered my about that was if it was an intruder how did "he" know about that spot that she was hidden in downstairs in the house?  That always bothered me.  And someone could be in the house doing all that and NO ONE heard "him"?

I know you love everything Cal, but it's probably in Calihoula's makeup to go after rodents.  Wow I never knew the Catahoula dogs carried the merle gene!  "Because Catahoulas carry the gene for merle coloration, which is linked to deafness, unilateral (one-sided) and bilateral (both sides) hearing loss is also a concern in the breed...."

Cal, lol on the poor rats butt! :D I used to get angry with Molly when she would sneak up on a bird at the feeder and snatch it up! Since she has aged she completely ignores the birds now! She lays under the bush right next to the feeders and doesn't even look at the birds even the ones on the ground! They must know she isn't interested in them because they don't seem to be fearful of her. That is one great price for a crown!! Wow! You have really good dental insurance! Crow is getting a couple more implant posts put in for his upper dentures because the dentist didn't put in enough the last time which caused his dentures to be loose. His dentures are held in place with implanted posts. Another $5000!  :o His insurance will pay very little on this bill.  I love that pic of Guy! He is one cool bear! Hope we hear some good news about Aster.

Jp, one eyed Jack is one pretty cool bear, too!

Ra, the next 7 days are supposed to be great here! Yay! Several freezes and frosts have damaged some of my flowers for this year, darn it. Better luck next year. I like the Honda Pilots and the CR V's. We have been thinking about getting an SUV. Don't you just hate to deal with car salesmen? We have an owner of a huge car dealership running for governor! They say he has a good chance of winning! He won't be getting my vote. I think Blacklist and Blindspot are my favorites shows.

Nora, if I'm remembering right, the Ramsey's house was huge. So I can see how something could happen and no one would hear. My house is small...4 rooms and a bath and a full size basement. One night my neighbor's house was on fire. The fire truck came with the siren blaring and stopped in front of my house with its lights flashing. Our bedroom is in the front of the house and Crow sleep through the whole ordeal! He didn't wake up until I shook him and woke him up! Is Chester adjusting to his new home? Does he like to play with toys?

Hi Jewelies!  Cloudy here most of the day, but around 70o, so good "working outside weather".  I spread 23 bags of mulch... in an area that I hadn't planned on putting it!  lol  Oh, well.  Guess I'll have to wait until next winter to do it.  Too many plants are up and thriving, and I don't want to cover them all up.  Tomorrow, maybe I'll get to finish my painting.

rues... Blacklist and Blindspot are two of my favorites, too.  I have a lot of favorites!   :D  I like the Voice, too... and Dateline Mysteries... and Hawaii 50... and I like Steve Harvey's new show Little Big Shots.  How is the hair cut this time?  Even?   ;)  I love my little SUV, still feels new.  My oldest grand says she likes the smell of my car... all the cleaning stuff makes it smell... well... clean.  lol

cal... That is an awesome price on a crown!!  Must be nice!  I'd have a mouthful, if that's all I had to pay!  My dentist keeps reminding me of all the huge fillings that are old and should be replaced.  They make the crowns right there at the office, so you don't have to go back for the permanent one.  But... they cost over $1000, so I'm not in any hurry to replace them.  I told him that if they fall apart of fall out, then I'll worry about them.

My daughter decided that she needs to lose weight, so she heard about this plan called "From couch to 5K", and yesterday she started running on a track at the community center not far from her house.  Guess she forgot about her allergies... today, she's sick as a dog!  Poor thing!   Glad I don't have allergies like that.  When she called, I told her I was making chili and she made her hubby stop and pick up some for her on his way home.  The pollen is really bad this year... maybe because we didn't have much of a winter or something.  She'll have to wait for the pollen to be done before she can run again outside.

I'm worried about Aspen, too.  Dr. Rogers doesn't mention her...

JP... Did your Marlins win today?

Hi Nora!  And HI to everyone else, too.  Hope you are all well.
