My poor lilacs & other perennials!!! Hope they are ok. I've been reading your posts but couldn't figure out how to post. The reply symbol didn't reappear until this eve. Ted

That was quite a basketball game for the NCAA championship but the Villanova last second basket pulled it out.  So good to see baseball underway and Marlins open  tonight against Detroit.

I hope all Jewelies are getting through some wild weather and that things settle down shortly.  It is spring but you wouldn't know it in some  areas.

Pleasant thoughts to all.

Daily Updates
First Eastern Chipmunks, Field Courses Looking Great - UPDATE April 4, 2016
04 April 2016

This morning about 9 AM with the temperature a 9?F, I saw my first chipmunk for this year, a female Eastern Eastern chipmunk with leaves
Eastern chipmunk gathering leaves
Chipmunk (Tamias striatus). She was gathering leaves from snow-free spots for bedding. Large leaves got crumpled as she used her front feet to stuff them into her mouth and cheek pouches (photo to the left). Then she dove into her burrow that was still surrounded by snow (photo below). I wondered if the bedding was for her young that will be born in early May after a gestation period of about a month. The entrance was so inconspicuous that I?d never noticed it. An old entrance clogged with snow was just a foot away. Burrows can have multiple entrances. Adult females are the ones most likely to use the same burrow system year after year. They store food in the burrow for winter and don?t accumulate fat like ground squirrels do, according to The Smithsonian Book of North American Mammals (1999). In winter, they wake up periodically, raise the body temperature to normal, and sleep normally (not hibernating) for a few days, waking up to eat stored food, urinate, and defecate.  To learn how hibernation differs for chipmunks and black bears, visit http://www.bear.org/website/bear-pages/black-bear/hibernation/189-how-do-chipmunk-and-black-bear-hibernation-differ.html.

By 5 PM, the temperature was 35?F and she was being chased around by a male. Mating season is now when they?re just emerging. She wasn?t letting herself get caught, though, so it apparently was not her day of estrus. Eastern chipmunk going down hole
Eastern chipmunk going down hole
Assuming that she mates soon, gives birth in a month, and nurses the young for six weeks, we could be seeing her litter above ground near the end of the nursing period in mid June.

Last year, the first bear sighting here was April 17, less than 2 weeks away. Excitement grows. We especially will be looking for old favorites like One-eyed Jack, Big Harry, Burt, Pete, Crackle, and Guy?all 11-20+ years old. All are very trusting in this location but are so wary in the woods that we never see them, or hear of them being seen, which may be why they survive to these ages. We have never heard of a bear complaint about any of them.

WRI brochureWe will also be looking for Shadow (the matriarch of the clan), who should have turned 29 in January.

Mothers we expect to have cubs are always cause for anticipation. This year, mothers with cubs will almost certainly include 17-year-old RC, 7-year-old Jewel (known to have at least two), 7-year-old Samantha, 7-year-old Summer, 5-year-old Daisy, 4-year-old Fern, and 4-year-old Sophie, plus non-clan mothers, Kimani and Annie.

A dozen other young females, some of them not often seen here, turn 3, 4, or 5 this year and could also have cubs. Throughout the community, other households that feed bears will be reporting sightings, so we can take Bear Course participants there in addition to seeing the families that come here.

A brochure about the Black Bear Field Courses can be seen by clicking here for the outside and here for the inside.  For printing purposes you can download a high resolution version by clicking here for the hi-res outside and here for the hi-res inside.  Thirteen slots are still open at http://www.bearstudy.org/website/field-study-courses.html. There is nothing in the legislature that will prevent close encounters, and from what we hear the hand-feeding language will be removed. Looking forward to great Field Courses this year and hoping they will continue next year and beyond, but the future is hard to predict.

Thank you for all you do.

Congratulations great grandma Deb!!!  :)  Hard to picture you have a great grandchild!

I bet those ravens know they aren't bear food AND want what the bears have.  :)

Loved the fat dog shame that got stuck  :D

JP I so love your "good mornings" and additions here.

The Shadow clan was interesting.

Oh no RA, you don't need a "good year" for fire ants!  Do you have anything that you've used on them?  There are some natural things that I hear really work.  Good going on your foundation!

It's 34 and feels like 26 degrees out with rain, sleet, and sometimes a SMALL break between.  Ish!  Hope it's nicer tomorrow when we have to go to LaCrosse for Joe's pre-op visit with the ortho surgeon for his surgery next week.

blschue was the moose in your "hometown" like MN?  That would be so neat.  Wonder whatever happened to the Iowa moose that was in this area last year.

OMG you were at 9 degrees this morning Cal??!!!  :-\  OH OOOPS that was northern MN, whew, just scrolled down a hair more.  You 43 sounds more like it.  Did the RVer have a handicapped sticker and just park near those spots?  ;)

Hello again ... finally.  I've replaced my old laptop with a new one ... love it.  It has a touch-screen.  I don't know why I need that, but I allowed myself that treat.   :)  Now I have to drag that old one to someone to see if they can still recover my photos from it.  <crossed fingers>

I found this on a friend's FB page, and had to share it, even though there's a chance you've already seen it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc6Up31iER0

Nora, I was sorry to hear about your Sparkie, but glad that Chester has come into your lives so soon.  He sounds wonderful.

Thanks for the photo of the Blue Angels, JP.  My husband, Larry, really enjoyed seeing that.  About 3 weeks ago, we had the Thunderbirds here at our Air Base (Davis-Monthan AFB)  It's only a mile or so from our house, so we can even enjoy the air show from our back yard.  They fly over the house so low, you can just about make out the pilot in the cockpit... now and then.   ;)

Today it will reach at least 90, I think ... and maybe a wee bit over.  I wish we had some rain.  I adore heavily overcast days, and a good breezy.  A place like Tucson gets way too many sunny, and often hot days in a year.  My daughter, Susan is still getting snow up in Cheyenne... and too much wind for her liking.  She was born in the desert, but I don't think that she could do a whole summer here again.

Thanks for the nods and hellos that I get from you at times.  I never have anything of much interest to say, so I am always a bit surprised to be remembered.  You know, I think that if we all had a party and I was there too, I'd be the people watcher over by the side of the room ... occasionally talking to those that walk past.   :)

Anyway, I hope that all are having a good day.

Braveheart with either Geneva, Stratton or Porter

Up late because of the Marlins opening game.  Unfortunately  they lost in the 11th inning 8-7.

Neva, Nice to see your post and glad you have a new computer.  The Blue Angels were here for an air show at the local Boca Chica Naval Air Station.  The Budweiser Clydesdales were here also.  Fun to see them around town.

A big Hi to everyone..  Wishes for a Wednesday (Hump Day) that is pleasant in all respects.  The way time flies by it seems as if every other day is a Hump Day and we are always sliding down from the hump.

Daily Updates
Energetic Holly, Snow Again - UPDATE April 5, 2016
05 April 2016

At winter?s end, Holly is still full of energy. She is undoubtedly leaner than last fall, we?ll soon find out how Deer eating grass
Deer eating grass
much leaner, but she is still ready for a quick climb up the Pat Tree and a romp and slide across the icy pond as captured by a Lily Fan in this 1-minute video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvWVNB0ZoFY.

Out the window, the snow around the chipmunk hole had melted. White-tailed deer, like this last year?s buck fawn, were finding patches of green. Then it all turned white. Over 3 inches of snow fell in a couple hours.

The videos captured by Lily Fans are just one example of how much volunteers make possible. It?s the same at the Bear Center. As we grow, we are ever in greater need for volunteers. We believe volunteers have been a big factor in making the North American Bear Center the #1 attraction in Ely according to Trip Advisor. Eastern chipmunk's hole

So often, people stop me on the street to tell me what a great time they had at the Bear Center thanks to great people who helped them and talked with them about bears.

Bear Educator Volunteers help with behind the scenes tours, direct people to the right exhibit to answer their questions, support the daily and hourly programs, and even take the mike and help with the podcasts. Many of the Bear Educator Volunteers have also taken the Black Bear Field Course to gain safe, close-up experience with wild bears and experience the Snow at the research cabin

variation in black bear personalities. Some bears are timid. Others more confident. To me, it?s always a thrill when I make a connection with a timid wild bear and feel accepted. They learn us as we learn them. With that kind of experience, it becomes a joy to share it. I don?t know anywhere else where a person can get that kind of experience, and I can?t think of a better place to share it than as a Bear Educator Volunteer at the Bear Center. Judy Thon is hosting a Bear Educator Training Session there April 22-24. Just from the training session, people learn so much and become so valuable. I asked her what people have to do to get in. She said you have to complete a volunteer application indicating you would like to be a Bear Educator Volunteer at http://www.bear.org/website/volunteer.html. She said each application will be reviewed and the people contacted. Bear Educator Volunteers come from all walks of life.

Thank you for all you do.
