Bears and Birds - UPDATE March 9, 2016

Porter
Porter
Ted was out today, and a Lily Fan caught the action in this 3-minute video https://youtu.be/OYsjWmZbeAI.

Out the window, the birds were on alert. The sharp-shinned hawk with the injured eye was back and doing better. When he or she visited three days ago, it never opened its left eye more than a slit. The roughed up feathers on that side of its head suggest it ran into something. Today, it closed that eye to a slit at times but opened it when birds fluttered by. He never made a pass at them, though, and left after about an hour. Chickadee with white sides

I hope it gets better and shows more activity.

An e-newspaper article came out in which I expressed my distaste for certain ways of harvesting bears. I am against trapping them because having a foot crushed or bones broken is unnecessarily cruel and it is hard to enforce checking the traps daily, although there is no wounding loss by that method. I am against hounding because of the practice period that can give the bears a Sharp-shinned hawk

summer of harassment and can catch cubs on the ground as is shown in a video taken by hunters in which the hounds spread eagle a big cub that manages to escape under the roots of a tree. Since one of the goals in the practice period is to teach the hounds to be aggressive toward bears, and a cub would be unlikely to harm the dogs, the hunter repeatedly poked the cub with a stick and made it get out and face the hounds again. That video, when shown to the Minnesota State Legislature, resulted in a resounding no vote on hounding here, and the subject has not come up again. I am against spring hunts because the cubs could be up a tree while the mother is shot, leaving the cubs to starve, which is neither fair chase or a quick kill. I was surprised that Kentucky was having a bear hunt when there are so few bears there that the hunting quota was only 35. That made me ask why they would have a hunt when the available habitat is not close to being filled yet. I don?t believe I said anything about trophy hunting. http://www.vocativ.com/news/286413/bad-news-bear-hunting-is-on-the-rise.

I kind of like this (shown above) different shot of Braveheart?s son Porter that a participant snapped in a Black Bear Field Course last August 5. We?re pulling the July 31 to August 3 Black Bear Field Course for this year since no one has signed up yet. If demand develops, we can re-open them. It is a prime time to see a lot of bears if the DNR doesn?t interfere.

Thank you for all you do.

Pepsi was 5 cents and 12 ounces.  Coca-Cola was 5 cents but only 6 ounces.  Here's a 1940 jingle.

It took me 6:53 to solve the puzzle and admit that I do not know what it meant.  Hair and traffic messed up in the snow???

Hi Jewelies!  :)

The weather is wonderful! I won't hex things by talking about whether the next season is already here, but I thing we are done with the season we are in now. Ha!

Cal Saw a dog on the internet the other day. His name was Sausage Biscuit!! LOL! Reminded me of you and your little pot roast!

JP My county has Senior Services who will hook you up with transportation for medical stuff. I use it whenever I go to my doctor appointments at the hospital downtown (about a 20 mile trip each way). The charge for the trip is $60, but I only pay $10. I know that the company who drives me takes lots of people out of town on long trips for medical treatment. Even if they took me 300 miles, I would still pay only $10. Maybe there is something like that in Key West.

I have been pretty busy with the doggie rescue business. We just got in 9 new dogs over the last few days and there are lots of applications for people wanting to adopt so that is a good thing. But, I'm the only volunteer without a job, so they pile the work on me. I can charge through those applications in no time.  :D My eyes are killing me though.

I got my hair cut off the other day; she cut off about 9 inches! And it was a really great haircut. It's not too short, a little longer than chin length and I didn't have her cut around the ears. It feels great!

I am hoping to go with my daughter and the foster dog, Bella, to an event at Bass Pro Shop out in Olathe on Saturday. It kind of depends on how I feel. They let the rescues bring their dogs out and set up booths for us. I hope Bella makes a good impression and finds a new forever home. Here she is all ready for St Patrick's Day:

Just have time to post one pic for you tonight. This is Bei Bei from last week. He is playing on his apparatus while his mom is munching bamboo out in their yard. He sure loves to climb.

I've been keeping up with all of your posts and I have a bunch of cute pics I have captured or received on Facebook for you guys, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I had to finish up a couple of applications' notes, so I have been sitting here for over 2 hours and need to get up.

Hi to Rues, Obsver, Ra, Willi, Blschue, Nora, Neva, Chippy, Pat, Deb, Eaglette and all who visit here. Hope you have a restful night.  :)

Would drinking pop with a straw be any better?  Joe has to watch his carbs and gets the Diet Ocean Spray Cran-Grape or Cran-other flavors.  The one I had handy is the Cran-Grape and it has 2g carbs and less than 1g sugars.  The ones called "lite" are worse.

Thinking about you today JP!  Ooops your appointment was yesterday!  Is it a good thing if there was moisture in your eye?  Or you get it if it's too long between going in?  "I am thinking of some young man who would do it for a couple of hundred dollars. "  For ONE trip???????  Great picture of Porter upside down!

Today was pretty good once the sun came out, tomorrow should be 61.

I hope RA has been doing ok with all the storms lately!

Willi how neat about the penguin!

Good one D.  :D

I know there is a transport van Joe could have taken up to LaCrosse to Gunderson for a follow up visit when he was still in the swing bed here in town, I believe Medicare maybe would have paid it, otherwise I never did ask the cost, I should have.  People can also get it to go from home to Decorah and other places for medical appointments.  Our neighbor took it to Iowa City for one, that's a pretty good trip down there.  NINE inches cut off, that's a lot of hair.  Bet it feels real good and for sure will when it gets hot out.  Bella is beautiful!!  The hardware store over in Decorah lets the Human Society of Northeast Iowa bring over cats and dogs that are up for adoption once a month.  They have pretty good luck. In the summer they are in the fenced in area where they sell stuff outside and it's shaded and when it's cold out they set up inside.

Our gas has been bouncing up and down like a yoyo.  Today the bad stuff was back up to 1.95 and stuff without the darned ethanol was 2.35 again.  This changing a good ten cents a gallon is crazy.

Blschue, with propane does the frig still need electric to run and the propane cools it?  I'm used to propane being for heat.  That's funny about the guys when you were in the store.  :D  Glad someone loaned you a frig!

This is Burt.  They describe him as "He is indeed a sweetheart. He is the most mellow, patient, and calm bear we've ever met.?

Everyone have a fine Friday.  Celebrate as there is only 10 more days of Winter.

Nora,  I have Wet Macular degeneration in my right eye. Moisture is not good.

Wet Macular degeneration is the more serious form of Macular degeneration. It is caused by blood vessels leaking fluid underneath the retina and damaging the vision in the eye. Fortunately there are treatments today that are very effective in reducing vision loss. You should be seeing a retina specialist, he will likely recommend an Avastin or Eylea injection into the eye. Hopefully this will decrease the fluid leakage and improve the vision. This will be an ongoing thing for some time, possibly requiring injections every five to six weeks until it is under control. Will you lose your sight? Only time will tell for sure, but with the proper treatment the loss can be minimized.

It took me 6:11 to brief the Texas Rangers before they could go look for my lost marbles.

Good Morning Jewelies.
I am out of my own comfort zone and staying at my folks for the next month to take care of their lovely Cocker, Emma.  She is so sweet, but much larger than my daughter's doxie mix.  My folks are on their "last vacation" so they call it.  They are cruising from Rio to Miami and will get to see the Amazon on their way too.  Hey JP, you might be able to wave to them as they pass you.  hahaha.  MARBLES, I loved marbles as a kid.  We played that so much.  When I saw your post JP, well it sure took me down memory lane.  I don't think the kids do that anymore.  Government probably told the parents that they are small pieces and could be swallowed.  I have no idea how us kids ever survived all those dangers, but I am sure glad as heck that we had the opportunity to do so.

Cal, you had a busy day of wrangling in your cats to treat them for fleas.  I have a friend that lives in Sarasota FL and she is the adopted Mom of 6 indoor cats and numerous outdoor cats.  The outdoor ones won't let her get any closer than to leave them bowls of food and water.  The indoor ones are her kids (she and her husband never had any human kids) so I have heard many stories of trying to herd cats to give them medicine.  Once the first one tells the others, it is all over.  None of the cats want her to get near her.  But is for their own good and no one ones to have a flea house.

Blschue, I did not recall you are traveling in a RV.  Do you live in it year round?  I watch all kinds of youtube videos of RVers.  It looks like so much fun.  Do you boondock too?  Like out in the wild? not the Walmart parking lot kind ;-)   How big is your RV?  Class A or C?  Do you have slides?  I don't know if I would want to own one with slides, seems like I would be scared that the slide won't go back in.  I don't think you could drive it with the slide out.  Do you have a composting toilet?  I guess that is enough questions for now.  LOL

Nora, may be time for separate bedrooms to get some sleep.  This way you can choose which room to whoopie in  :o   I do not function without my needed rest.

JP, try taking your night dose of Gabapentin a little earlier and get to sleep earlier, then maybe you will wake up when you used to wake up.  I know you enjoy your mornings and don't want to lose any minute of that time.  My Medicare pays for up to 10 trips each year to medical appointments and there is no charge.  Maybe Florida Medicare does too?  Or maybe the VA pays for it.

Hello to Rues, ra, Dlong, Neva, Willi, and Chippy and anyone else that I forgot to include.  I enjoy reading all your posts!!!!

Have a peaceful weekend y'all.

That was one long horn.  It took me 6:26 to measure it and then I lost my figures.  8 feet something.
