Last year, one of Juliet's cubs having fun rolling.

I am so tired of weather where it does not get above 64o in trhe daytime and goes to mid to low 50s at night.  Very strange for here.

I drove down to the beach area yesterday.  It was 63o, but sunny and not a lot of wind.  Here is a picture of all the people enjoying the day.

ra, I have no idea how the blood gets replaced.  I never studied that stuff in school.  I guess you just eat and the body creates new blood.

I hope we all have warm weather and sunny disposition.

Lucky, Holly, Honey - UPDATE February 11, 2016

Bear 401
Bear 401
Morning stretch. At 8:27 AM Lucky initiates stretching in this 9-minute video. Holly notices. It is catching. She stretches. They both stretch over and over. I bet most people (not Lily Fans, though) don?t realize that stretching is part of the denning repertoire. This could account for some of the puzzling blips researchers see on implanted data recorders that watch heart rate, breathing, etc. By 8:41, both bears are back down without any physical contact. Stretching in this case didn?t include the need for snuggling, wrestling, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYl9v1_x0n4

In this 5-minute video, Honey demonstrates dainty snacking habits. She comes partway out, takes a mouthful of snow, settles back, puts it on her right front paw, and eats it in nice little bites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_B5IR3NQyA

I can?t remember if I sent this picture before but it is meaningful to me. It?s 401, the first bear I ever walked with back in the mid 1980?s. Like most, she never got in trouble.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! Getting ready to snow AGAIN! Could get 3 more inches. Then comes the bitter cold temps. I want to be sitting in Jp's beach pic with all those other beach bums! Lol! Not shoveling snow and freezing to death! Lol!

Cal, you sound like my older sister... she would always yell at me about walking or biking alone on River Road. It's a narrow road that follows the river about a mile up river. It passes by the Country  Club and it's a very pretty area. Lots of runners and bikers use it, too. The only problem is some of the cars don't want to share the road and they drive to fast and will run you off the road. Sis is afraid I'll end up over the hill and no one will find me! Crow doesn't worry about me. He says I'm a big girl and I can take care of myself!  I went back and reread your post...you said the cats were in the barn, I'm the one that put them in your garage! Lol! Yesterday was Boober's 11th birthday! He enjoyed his Little Debbie cake and chewing on his new stuffed toy! He has lived 5 years longer than his mom and dad. I hope you get to go horse back riding. That would be so much fun for you! I was on a horse once and I felt like I was sitting on top a mountain! It's a long way down to the ground!!Lol!

Jp, I'm so jealous of the view in your pic!  So pretty!

Ra, Crow is a lousy bike rider! He has no balance and rides erratically! Lol! I watched Blacklist last night because the show I usually watch on PBS wasn't on because of the Democratic debate. Normally, I watch it the next day on my iPad.  I wish I hadn't seen that courthouse cat because now I worry about him and where he goes at night and all that kind of stuff!

Nora, good news about Joe! Stay warm!

Hi all.........

Weather -- Now 14 feels like -4.  Supposed to be -14 tonight then (high/low) Sat. 8/1, Sun. 20/24, Mon. 31/19, Tues. 30/12, by next Friday it might hit 40.

For Joe's rehab they monitor his blood pressure and pulse while he's on the treadmill and bike.  He walked the treadmill for a half hour the other day and they also set it a little harder each time.

Need to get something done here......

Hi Jewelies!  :)

I've been keeping up with all of your posts and I freak out my cats by laughing out loud at your comments sometimes!  ;D I was feeling pretty good about 2 weeks ago and then wrenched my back while changing sheets on the bed! So have been taking more pain meds and being groggy a lot. I'm now back to just one pill in the evening before bed, so I've been more energetic, but still get twinges in my back if I move the wrong way. I've been helping out with doing the interviews for people who want to adopt a rescue German Shepherd and now I am helping interview the folks who want to be foster parents for rescues. I have to watch my computer usage because my eyes are still getting pretty tired.

I don't remember who was talking about Cheez-Its but they have an Extra Toasty kind now. They are really crunchy and taste just like the regular ones. I love Cheez-Its. I got 2 boxes at the store the last time I was there. They were having a sale.

I was awake very early one morning, just after sunrise and these pretty colors were in my sky.

JP I had to laugh about your "gallons of blood". That's what I feel like sometimes when they take 6 tubes out at once. And, I was reading an article that says they could get by with a lot less blood because the tests nowadays only use just a little blood, but they continue to take excess amounts "just in case" they don't have enough or something goes wrong. I loved your picture of the empty beach! Bring that temperature up here to Missouri and there will be a horde of folks sitting on the sand; maybe even in bathing suits!

Cal I can't believe you now have jumping cows! LOL! I was not aware that they could jump over a fence. I have seen them lean into a fence and knock it over. Those cows are really sneaky! One of my old friends had a hip replacment last year. She had two horses and is now riding again. Where was the gas 99 cents? I should go get some. I have hardly driven anywhere because I don't drive so well when I'm taking pain pills.

Obsver Glad you have missed the worst winter storms so far. I've been trying to catch up reading all the 111 books on my Kindle that haven't been read yet. So, I have made a pact with myself that I will not download any new ones for awhile. I'm keeping a list of all the ones I want to read. It's getting to be a pretty long list!

Eaglette I've been noticing the hot weather on the west coast and in the southwest. 2 of my kids live in Phoenix and they are going to be over 90 by Wednesday. I'm not a fan of hot weather but the winters around here are beginning to get to me.

Nora Good news for Joe. Glad he can drive a shorter distance and wait 6 months for his next appointment. Iowa has been getting a bunch of winter storms this year. So far, we have been pretty lucky.

Ra I looked up that Indian Rocks Beach you are going to. It sure is pretty there. But they do have sharks! Yikes! The article I read said it got it's name from a Native-American chief being healed by water from a spring that had lots of rocks around it.

Rues Too bad you are getting some more cold and snow! I recorded Blacklist last night and haven't watched it yet today. Going to do that as soon as I am finished here. Are you watching Mercy Street on PBS? It's really good I think.

There is sure a lot of snow at the Bear Center. Here's a little video of Ted getting some more hay earlier today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vnWllaeSBc

Little Bei Bei is getting so feisty. This is a really long video of his outdoor adventures. He went out for the first time a couple or 3 days ago. In this video he climbs up to the windows inside, then goes outside and runs around, climbs trees a little bit and wrestles with mom. He is still adorable!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdHYQxGeXDQ

One of the keepers took Bei Bei outside for a very short time when it snowed so much. I don't think he was sure about the snow but he did taste it.

This is Mei Lun and Mei Huan when Atlanta got a little bit of snow awhile back. Pandas mostly love snow!

This is Bei Bei and his mom in the doorway the first day he went outside with her.

Bei Bei and Mei inside on the rocks. He keeps trying to bite his mom and she keeps trying to walk away from him. He is very persistent.

Hi to Willi, Neva, Pat, Chippy, Blschue, Deb and all who visit here. Hopefully I will be back more often. But even if I am feeling lousy, I can feel better by coming here and reading about all of your adventures.

DLong love the pandas and that sky is fantastic!  Neat clouds.

The beach looks great JP, I hate lots of people around, so maybe could handle that  ;)

I see Ted grabbed the new straw right away  :D

Hi Jewelies!  Well... Got to see some snowflakes this morning... teeny tiny little ones.  Then, when the temps got up to about 40o, I decided to go outside and do some burning.  Called the burn notice number and they said the danger level was low.  So, I got all my burning done.  It got windy and was a little scary.

DLONG!!  You're back!  I missed you!  Thanks for the pics and videos of little Bao Bao!  I need a baby panda... he's just the cutest little guy!  The pic with his little tongue sticking out is precious!  The Atlanta girls are so BIG now!  Your morning sky looked so pretty!  Sorry to hear you wrenched your back!  Good idea not to drive when you take pain meds!  lol  I hope you visit us again real soon!  I don't have to worry about the sharks in the Gulf... I stay out of the water, except to wade.  Makes me nervous for my girls to swim in any of the big waters...  The beaches of the Atlantic had a lot of shark attacks last year.  Funny, I've always like Cheez-Its, too, but don't like Cheese Nips.  I don't know what the difference is, do you?

cal... As a matter of fact, I do have hip issues.  And, back issues, and thumb issues, and knee issues, and foot issues.  Getting old is really hard!  I forgot to comment on your jumping cows!!  I've never seen one jump a fence either!

rues... I haven't watched Blacklist yet.  Did you watch it today?  I'm behind on Shades of Blue... two weeks to watch.  Maybe tomorrow...  Monday we're supposed to get snow and sleet... 90% chance.  Great.  Wouldn't you know that's the day I do the early offices!  Supposed to be in the teens that day, too.  Yuck!

JP... I'd be one of those people who would be sitting on that beach, too.  Any beach, any time!  Can't believe there wasn't a single person out there!  It looked good to me!

Nora... Wow!  It's going up to 40!!  I know you'll enjoy that after all the cold weather you've had!

Hi willi!   Hi blschue!

Well, I'm headed for the shower.  I smell like wood smoke!  Hi to everyone!

Ted, Holly, Lucky, Website Relocation - UPDATE February 12, 2016

Young males arguing
Young males arguing
In this 10-minute video captured by a Lily Fan, Holly?s activity might have been triggered by Vinny the Vole. See what you think. After Holly was active for a few minutes, Lucky sat up, but like yesterday, no touching. They both seemed content in their own beds. I believe Holly has kept her bed where it is ever since she gently edged Lucky out of it into his present bed some weeks ago. https://www.facebook.com /toni.embree.50/videos/ 1185665748132720

In this video that is 1 ? minutes, Scott gives Ted some straw. A half hour later, Ted is out raking it in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vnWllaeSBc

In the picture, two young adult males are arguing over food.  When food was abundant, these two had buddied up and traveled together wrestling from time to time.  When food became scarce, their partnership became strained.  Although they argued over food with loud vocalizations and open-mouthed threats, they didn?t hurt each other.  Where food is abundant, bears often buddy up and play a lot.  Where food is scarce, finding food becomes paramount.  One reason bears don?t travel in herds is probably that their food patches are too small to support groups.  I suspect that one reason mother bears don?t keep their yearlings through the major feeding time of summer is that competition from offspring as large as yearlings could make it harder for the mothers to find enough food to maintain their pregnancies.

The last couple days have had a spurt of media interest. Calls today were from a friend who will host a bear program for a major network and from a writer checking facts for an outdoor magazine.  The latter call and article were spurred by scenes in the recent movie, The Revenant.  For the first call, I have to decide if I will be on camera.  The program is about bear attacks.  I usually shy away from those programs because they mischaracterize bears by focusing too much on attacks.  Fear sells.  Sensationalism generates audiences, and it is hard for TV producers to resist sensationalism.  But this program will be hosted by a man who thinks much like I do and wants to put aberrant attack behavior in perspective, and I think I could be effective in that.  I?m leaning toward being part of it and hoping that the host and I don?t get burned in the editing.  I hope it truly educates like I think it will.

Tonight, our webmaster will be taking us offline for a few hours to switch over to a new hosting company. The issues that were the root cause of the hacking were the fault of the current hosting company. If all goes well, we should be up again by morning.
