We're at 8 degrees (feels like -3) and tomorrow 16 and mostly sunny, which is good on the sun, because we have to go to Decorah for the first follow up with Joe's cardiologist.  Last visit at Gundersen (LaCrosse) his surgeon released him from follow up with him.  At least they could get him in a LOT closer to home for this.

We need an exercise bike.

Well, Jewelies, I feel lucky we didn't get much snow--we're just a little too far south to be affected by the lake effect (Lake Michigan) snow. The dreaded wind is blowing, though, and 24 degrees.  Rues, at our library, our number is put on the card in the front of the book. They keep the card while I have the book. All I have to do is look at the card and know if I've ever checked it out. I don't have a card--had the same number for over 50 years. They keep a file with everyone's number. Growing up, in a much larger library, we all had cards. Tell crow that a new Randy Wayne White is coming out. Gee, cal, you have all those boys, and I have never owned a male dog. Most of my outside cats are males. The girls rule in the house, though. Ra, you poor thing! 40 degrees!! I know, I know, you've had your share of cold Mich. winters, though. Are the summers any more humid than ours up here? Nora, hoping that Joe gets a good doc. report. The Decorah nest looks all ready for eggs. Aren't they amazing birds!!  Jp, how many vials did they take from you? They could at least give you cookies afterwards. Don't people who give blood get a treat? Hi, Eaglette, bischue, Dlong,  neva, Willi, deb, pat!!

Cal, now I know I'm a bum! Here you work your butt off all day long and still have time to exercise while I hardly do anything and then do no exercise! I used to exercise every day...walked 2 miles and then worked out with weights. To be honest, I felt better then and I guess I'd feel better now if I started a routine again. Maybe when the weather warms up. :-\   I did not know that cows could jump fences! How do they get those big bodies up and over? Hope those guys got them back where they belong! Hi to Polly!

Jp, hope the vampire thing went well today!

Ra, that's the sweetest video! Thanks!

Obsver, I'll tell Crow about the new Randy Wayne White book. One of the books he checked out the other day and had already read was a White book!

Nora, hoping everything works out well tomorrow...weather wise and doctor appointment!

Hi Willi! How's that new house?

Hope you all have a nice evening!  :)

Rues, I don't remember if White's new book is out or coming out soon. I go to the Barnes & Noble site a lot for info. on books. If you go there, type his name in the search box, and it will show you all the books that are out.  Goodnight, Jewelies!!!

This is  either Lorie, Mike, or Len.  One of Samantha's 2014 cubs.

No problem with the vampire yesterday.  I just have too go to work bodily replacing the gallons of blood they extracted.

For everyone:

Holly?s Den Cam - UPDATE February 10, 2016

Camping exhibit at NABC
Camping exhibit at NABC
Holly was intensely interested as the staff realigned her Den Cam. As far as we could tell, Lucky stayed hunkered down and raised his head only when Holly got up to come over for a close check of the camera. https://www.facebook.com/ toni.embree.50/videos/ o.139730642706794/1184491504916811/ ?type=2&theater.

View from Ted's Chalet den

A problem is that we could see better when it was twisted, at least during the day. The night shots are good. But by day, the bright light from the door tells the camera to darken down, making it hard to see. I hope we can figure a way to shade the lens from that light so we get a brighter image inside. A flap that would shade the lens would attract Holly?s attention, so I don?t know how long it would last. Maybe next summer we can drill a new hole closer to the door and aim the camera so it doesn?t see so much light. The staff will figure something out, I?m sure.

At home, we have the moose program, Moose: Life of a Twig Eater, set to record when it airs on PBS at 7 PM central time. Here is a link for details on the program http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/ moose-life-of-a-twig-eater-about/13752.

At the Bear Center, the pretty picture to the right is Ted?s view from his Chalet Den. Inside the staff and others are making good progress on the extreme makeover. People won?t know they?re in the same place. Exciting. The white posts in the picture above will be white pines. Branches attached to them will hold local birds that have hit windows or cars and are at the taxidermist being made into flying or sitting mounts for the exhibit. The tent and bear are in their approximate positions. In front of the tent will be a fire. All made by the same team that made the 4-season habitat exhibit that is getting such rave reviews in the Ecology Hall.

Trusses   Trusses    Trusses
Progress on the trusses for the new entryway
Near the Bear Center, three trusses are finished for the new entryway. They tell me installation at the Bear Center will begin next week when it is warm enough to work with the wood. Again, the wood team is top-notch. They travel the US making entryways for Cabela?s and others and are located less than a mile down the highway from the Bear Center.

Thanks for all you do and have done to make the Bear Center what it is and is becoming.

6:23 Found it at Moonstone Beach, CA

Obsver, Randy's new book is not coming out til March 15.  Based on the subject matter, it really hits home right now.  I have a hard time reading those kinds of books.  Too much suspense for me, but my Dad enjoys suspense novels.

JP, I can't stand the vampires myself.  Right now the Red Cross is beating on my door practically trying to get me to give them some of myself.  I used to do it all the time, but I am taking meds that make me bleed like a stuck pig.  I cannot get them to understand NO.  Wish I could get off their list.  If you have B+ blood, give at your local Red Cross, apparently they really need that type.  BTW, I forgot to tell you the other day that the photo you posted with Braveheart and lil cub was just so touching.  I wish more people could see how gentle these animals are within their clans.

Nora, I know how having to travel for doctor's appointments can be stressful.  I have a ways to go to the one specialist for me too.  I hope everything works out for your husband and that you like the local doc too.  I was looking at the nest today and it looked all nice and pretty.  Then I looked at the temp and went oh $#!t.

Willi, we have missed hearing about your new house.  Thanks Rues for bringing that up.  Do tell us please.

Rues, I walk a lot when I get the chance to do it.  Somedays up to 10 miles.  No, not me, but in my day dreams I do.  hahaha.  I DO walk as my exercise though.  Usually no more than 4 miles a day.  I can sure tell when I have been stuck inside and unable to go for my walk.  Not only am I not feeling good (which keeps me inside) but I also feel sluggish if I do not get my blood circulating by a good walk.  I don't drive a car anymore, so I walk to do just about everything and am lucky that I don't live out in the sticks.  I have pretty much every convenience within 5 miles of my home.  I have one of those trolly carts that I take with me when I plan to do some grocery shopping or need something from the hardware store.  I always tell my kids that I should get a job working for the city risk management department cause I know all the main sidewalks in town.  Some of them could use some work.

Cal, now you have me stumped.  What in the world possessed you to think that you might not be getting enough exercise and therefore needed to add an exercise bike to your collection of stuff?  YOU, my dear, are the real life energize bunny!!!  lol   I sure hope you get a chance to go horseback riding with your neighbors.  After shoveling horse poop, you deserve to be at the other end of the horse too!  Why exactly do you have those horses, if they don't ride you around???  Do you use them to work in the fields?

Today is another scorcher of a day here.  I am not complaining, just stating the facts ladies and gentlemen.  This is the year of THE EL NINO. I'll take it!  Glad to be living in my neck of the woods instead of many of yours.  I don't think I could take all that cold and JP, your weather is all messed up in the Keys.  I think mother nature has junior nature in training helping her out, cause that kind of weather just is not allowed in the Florida Keys!!

OK, time for a walk and then a nap.  Enjoy whatever is left of the day in your neck of the woods.  Peace be with you Jewelies, Eaglette.

Cal, the polar vortex is BACK!  :o Coldest temps of the season coming this weekend! How I hate to hear that!  I want El Nino back!   Wonder whose cats were in your garage? Do you think they are feral?  I picked Robin up today at court downtown. While I was sitting in the truck waiting for her I noticed a cat roaming around in the parking lot. I thought how odd, you never see animals downtown! I told Robin about the cat and she laughed and said that's the courthouse cat! He roams around and people feed him. One of the parking lot attendant's lets the cat inside his little shed where it's warm in winter and cool in summer! No one knows if he belongs to someone or not. Robin said he is friendly. Crow and I use to walk together until his feet started to crack! It became to painful for him to continue. I use to walk with my sister, too and then her knees started aching so we quit. Did some biking around town but almost got hit by cars so I gave that up. My town is supposed to be making a walk/bike path along the river this spring so if they do I'll give that a try. At least there I won't get run over! Gee, I'm doing a lot of whining and coming up with excuses! :o

Eaglette you really walk a long way...4 miles is a lot! I would probably have to call someone to come get me half way thru your walk! :D  Like you, everything is in walking distance to my house. But driving is so much easier! :D Mom would walk to the Foodland grocery store down the street from her house about 3 times a week. She would only get a few items because she couldn't carry everything. We told we were going to get her one of those pull shopping carts so she wouldn't have to go back to store so often. She told us no way, she enjoyed going to the store and anyway she wasn't an old lady. We never got her one because we knew she wouldn't use it!

Jp, hope your blood has been replenished! Cutest bear cub pic!

Blacklist tonight!

Hi Jewelies!  Pretty nice today, but cool and windy still, but sun was out.  Saw a pretty crescent moon last night on my way home from working at the office in town... so nice and clear.  I wondered if all of us here could see it at the same time... an amazing thought!   :)

cal... I hate that your toe is not better by now.  It should be.  Stupid doctor.  Funny that you play musical sleeping places at night.  Corey Dog was THAT close to Drama??  Wow!  Are you still having nose bleeds or is your furnace humidifier working for you?  I wish it was as easy as clicking my ruby flip flops to get me on the beach!!  We're planning a trip for this summer to FL again.  This time in the Indian Rocks Beach area... I think it's a little north of Amelia Island, but still in the Tampa area.  Not going back to where we went last time, too crowded there, too expensive, and no shells!!   Feel sorry for Brenda's DIL... I hope they sue the hospital... no excuse for that kind of treatment!!  I hope you get to ride Clyde's horse and go trail riding!! Could you jump up on the saddle on your belly and swing around somehow?  Maybe ride bareback... no stirrups to put all that weight on your hip...  I can't believe how much cheaper your gas is!  Ours is at $1.59 and I thought that was really good!

rues... I have a good excuse for not walking... too many hills and curves on my road and no shoulder to walk on, just a ditch to jump in if car is coming!   :o  Of course, I COULD walk Main Street, but there is still a lot of construction there... another excuse.  lol  I think cal is right... You need a bike buddy for the river trail!  Can Crow ride a bike?   :)  Love the story of the courthouse cat!!  I'm recording Blacklist again tonight... watching American Idol.

Eaglette... Love your stories, too!  And, I like that you say Peace to us all.  This world could use a lot more of that!  You remind of me of an old hippie, which is a good thing... from one old hippie to another!  lol  I understand about the feeling sluggish when you get cooped up inside.  Last weekend was my "get out and get something done" time.  I got so much done!  And, felt so much better with all the fresh air.  Even though the weather was a little chilly, the sun was shining and I got a little bit of color in my cheeks and on my nose.   FOUR miles a day??  Oh, my!   Where do you live?  I don't think I've ever heard...

JP... Just exactly how do you go about replacing the blood you gave up??  lol  I see it's been really cold down there this week, too!  You got your space heater cranked up?

obsver... Our normal high in the winter is around 50-55o, this week it's been in the 30's for highs!  Brrr!!  Yes, it's pretty humid here in the summer, but I can put up with it for a few months and not have to deal with snow and cold, cold weather.  One of these days I'll have all my yard work done and do some reading again.  Looking forward to it!  I still have a few books that I bought at the library book sale that I haven't read yet.  One of my customers recommended a book by Laura Frantz, the Mistress of Tall Acre.  Have you read that one?

Nora... How did Joe's follow up go today?  Did you go by the nest while you were in Decorah?  Glad you don't have to go as far for his appointments now.  How's he feeling?

willi... Yeah, willi... How's the new house?   :)

OK... Think I'm caught up now.  lol  Hi to everyone!  Dlong... Where are you?   :'(  :'(  :'(

Well Thursday evening and it's 12, should go down to 7 overnight, then 12 tomorrow with -11 tomorrow night.  The weekend will be cold too, but hopefully stay above 0.

Joe saw the cardiologist today and we could go to the satellite office in Decorah instead of way up to LaCrosse.  He should finish his cardiac rehab and come back in SIX months.  He was very pleased with how things were going for Joe.  Me too!
