Yay, the sun is shining!  :)

Cal, it's so disappointing that there will be no cams. I thought I was the only one that had forgotten about Jewel's gaping hole! Poor Jewel. I hope Dr Rogers will check on her. Your gas prices are always so low. Is it because you are close to the refineries? Maybe MO gas taxes are low? Ours is between $1.69 and 1.53 depending on what part of town you're at! Not complaining at all about the prices! Just wonder how long they will stay low. Starting tomorrow our temps are warming way up! High 50's and 60's all week until next Friday when they drop back down to 39! Our weather guy says long range Feb temps should stay above normal with little to no SNOW! I hope for once in his life he is right! :D Only time will tell! I recently downloaded on my iPad the Beatles channel on iHeart radio. I'm grooving to Ob-la-di Ob-la-da as I type! Lol!

Jp, I'm going to have to Google Sandpiper Day. I think you told us before what that is but as usual I can't remember! I bet your island will warm up in the  next couple days!

Ra,  good that you like the tree guy! Hope he came today! Since he is only charging you half of what you were expecting to pay now you can spend that extra cash on something else! :D Lol on your pants incidence and Handsome go round!  Did you see Blacklist last night? I was ready to come here today and tell you how much I hated Liz's hair but I don't hate it now! In case you missed the episode I won't say more! :D

Hi Nora and Eaglette!

Hi, Jewelies! What a beautiful day here!!!!  It's good to see you guys here. Had an interesting experience yesterday. After my shower, I plugged in my hairdryer--nothing--dead. I dug out a little one I've had for 30 years, couldn't bear to throw it away, only one catch. It now only blows for 3 min. at a time, and then it shuts off. Wait 5 min., then blows for 3 min., etc. Finally got my hair dry--good thing it's short! Went to town today and bought a new one.  More on my D.C. trip---at the Smithsonian, there was a creation of a typical kitchen of the 40's. I wanted to steal the bar of red Lifebouy soap really bad. JP & Neva, I know YOU remember it! I couldn't even get close enough to smell it.  When I was teaching, every Feb., I showed the kids my pics. of DC. and told them about the many wonders. Since Washington's & Lincoln's birthdays & Presidents' Day are in Feb., we also talked about money and the pics. on it. I haven't seen a 50 cent coin for a long time. Has anyone else? (Of course we had lessons on counting money all year long.) I took the grocery ads in and we had math lessons. They would pick 2 items from the ads and add up how much they would cost. I asked them what # appeared most often  (9) (like $2.99) and we talked about why that was--sounds cheaper than $3.00. Well, Jewelies, I just got carried away and have talked nonstop.   Oh, how I wish we could have a live cam!! Hope they find out that Jewel has made a good recovery. I got some gas yesterday for $1.69.

Hi Jewelies!  Beautiful day here today!  Low 60's!!  And, sunny!  Love it!  Got some more yard work done.  I cut another bush down, so when the tree guy comes he can just run that brush through the chipper, too.  Did I say that he used to be a jockey?  Little guy, around 50, i would guess and very wiry!  lol  We had a good conversation about horses, too.  I wonder if my ex told him who I was...  I bet he was wondering what was going on with us... ex, me, and our daughter all talking to him.  OH!... he asked if she and I are sisters!!  I told him now he's my friend forever!  lol

rues... He didn't show up today, but he called and said he ran out of time today and is it ok to come on Sunday morning.   My girls will be here this weekend, so they'll have to get up a little early.   :)  Yes, I saw Blacklist last night.  I like Liz better with dark hair. Did you know that she is really pregnant?  In real life, I mean.  She was on Kelly's show the other morning.  I didn't see it, but my daughter said she saw her.  I'm spending some of the leftover money on a window washer!  lol

cal... Your gas sure is cheap!  Ours is about the same as rues' and obsver's.  I just had leftovers from Mexican for supper.   I've been getting what I call Texas rice.  The waiters there know what I'm talking about, even though I made it up.  lol  You wouldn't like it... It's chicken, shrimp and steak grilled with tomatoes, peppers, and onions over rice with white cheese poured over the whole thing.  YUM!!  SIL went with us and picked up the tab!  Thanks, pita!  lol

Hi obsver!  When you were saying you pulled out your old hair dryer, I was thinking it was one of those that sit on the table and you put your head up in it...  Like at the beauty shop, but mine had a hose to the cap.  Good to see you!

Hi JP!  Hope you had a sunny day today!

Hi everyone... hope all are having a good day!  TGIF!!   :D

Old friends, Jewel, Fern and Herbie in 2013

Yesterday was certainly a Sandpiper Day for me. Sunny, warm , no wind and nothing annoying happened.  Last night cooled off, however, and this morning it is 66o hence I  stayed in bed to keep comfortable.  Mostly a dry day but cloudy is the Saturday prediction.

May all of you have a continuation of good weather as most said they had yesterday.  Enjoy January's last weekend.

Holly, Den Video, DNR - UPDATE January 29, 2016

In this 6-minute video, Holly rakes, looks, slaps at a vole, and found a old paper dinner bag. She then settles back to rest. https://www.facebook.com /toni.embree.50 /videos/1176422332390395

Today, DNR Research Director Dr. Lou Cornicelli responded saying:

Lynn, We apologize for the time required to complete your permit request. This email constitutes formal acknowledgement from me that you are declining special permit #21083. Consequently, the permit is not valid and you cannot place a camera in a den occupied by a wild bear. Lou

I responded:

Lou,

Thank you for the note. Yes, I agree. We won?t place a den cam.

I?d hoped for a miracle of cooperation. I wanted to be able to praise the DNR and show what we could accomplish working together. I wanted our work with the Den Cams to speak for itself, eliminating any need for me to respond to DNR accusations. I had hoped top DNR officials would see that no one wins without cooperation and that I was offering a win-win. The public and legislators would see that we had put the past behind us and were moving forward doing good science and unprecedented education all to the benefit of Minnesota. I always prefer to go forward without rehashing history which has two sides. That?s how we built the Bear Center in the face of DNR adversity.

However, my hopes were not reflected in the permit and its pages of defamatory material. The best we can do on the Den Cams now is wait for an election and hope for better leadership. Without Den Cams to speak for my work, I?m stuck having to refute the pages of half-truths about me that your attorneys thought should be included in the permit and be made public. Although I?d rather be moving forward (gathering data, publishing, improving the Bear Center), I can?t let the DNR and its attorneys blacken my name at a time when DNR legislation is coming up that would devastate what research and publishing opportunities I have left?legislation that would deal a significant blow to the economically depressed Ely area.

For now, I?ll occasionally visit the dens, staying back from the entrances and legally taking video and stills using long lenses. In the update on bearstudy.org tonight, I?ll show an example of that from 2007. It shows June and her cub snuggled together sleeping undisturbed. June knew the videographer and had long before learned to go about her life undisturbed in the presence of an observer.

All that said, I want to keep the door open. Later this year, I?ll revisit the possibility of den cams for this coming winter.

Jewel in her den - 10/22/15
The video mentioned above shows June on February 21, 2007, snuggled with cute Cal or Bud (Lily hidden). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYdDCioeFdI. With the advances in video technology since 2007, video from Jewel?s den will be better. She is pictured undisturbed in the den last October when people she knew snapped the picture from outside the den due to the wide open entrance.

Thank you for all you do.

41!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sunny!!!!!!!!!!  I'll take it!!!!!!  Sparky and I made it around the whole block (double long one) this noon.  He had a short walk to the corner and back the other day, but otherwise had to have fun in the dog run.  The street has been too icy and the wind cold.  I was actually too warm by the time we got back, should have worn a different jacket.  Hopefully the brunt of the storm they keep talking about will miss here this week, time will tell.  There is a chance of freezing rain tonight and rain tomorrow, hope not, would rather have snow if it has to do something.  Take care all......

Hi, Jewelies! Another warm day, but rain forecast for next week. Cal, I hope you are able to have the horses out a lot. Be careful with all that shoveling. It can be dangerous. Last winter a local 55-year-old man died after he had been shoveling his sidewalk. Do you have an equipment to clear the driveway? We have a small snowblower that we put on the front of our lawn mower.

Ra, my old hairdryer that kept quitting on me is a small hand held one in the shape of a circle. Many, many years ago, I had a dryer like they use in beauty shops. They don't use them where I go. Now, I just blow-dry, use a hair pick halfway through to fluff it up. I never want to see any plastic hair rollers nor curling irons again!! I started wearing my hair this way over 15 yrs. ago.I got my new dryer at a local beauty shop supply store for $45. It says Hot Shot Tools Helen of Troy. Box also says Turbo Ionic ceramic tourmaline 1875 watt. Clerk said ionic is the one to get--breaks apart water molecules for easier evaporation & faster drying--much easier on your hair. It's a lot more quiet than the one that died.

Hi Nora! it is 52 here and sunny!! I will take it too. hope you miss that ice and snow i hope i miss that ice and snow!!

Hi Obsver!! i know i gots to watch all that shoveling. lost our friend corey and he was only 53. i tend to want to just finish something and push myself..do that all the time..like i am driven..my mom same way.sister is not...today i went to walmart this morning and then to orscheilns. they had my nuts and berry bird food for the low low price of 19.99! under 20.00!! but really regular price there is 29.99 and at my feed store it is 29.50 so good price. bought some on thurday and that country lane scoopable cat litter. ad said it was 7.99 regular 9.99. at excelsior store me and sister got two bags of the litter got out to the car and she charged me 10.99 for it..told sister go back in and get my 6.00 back..sister went in came back with the cash but said we got the wrong one got the multiple cat one. but she gave it to me. they did not have the one on sale..that was the first say of the sale..when you have a sale on something you should really have it in stock. i looked at the ad only difference in the pic was the multiple cats part. so today at the richmond store they had tons of the sale litter there!! they are a better store really. so got some more. it is not going to waste around here..and only 7.99..under eight dollars..been working inside today..i painted my bedroom walls today!! moved the furniture out and painted all my walls. looks so nice now. corey dog helped some he got paint on his side. had to clean him off. ran the sweeper but my big area rug dark brown i did not sweep. it has all this white fur on it..babes'..the other two area rugs i took out throw away and kept the other three. rose was calling me from the barn and she said what the heck where is the grain? i grain them at 5 am and 2 pm so had to go to the barn awhile ago. was going to paint  my bathroom but time to feed everyone.
