Here's a pic of Tela and Wilson looking out the front storm door at the snow drift on the front porch!

Hi Jewelies!  Nice and sunny today and lots of melting going on.  Still some small white patches around and a few spots that will freeze tonite, but much better.  My daughter and the girls all came to my house with their devices in their hands, ready to get online.  lol  They all ate from the time they got here, till they left about 3 hours later!  Now, I need to restock my snacks!  lol  The schools will have a 2 hour delay in the morning.

rues... Wow!  That's a lot of snow... AND, Wilson looks huge!!  Nice to find some guys to do the shoveling for you!  Worth every penny, right?   ;)  You've NEVER visited DC??  Geez, rues... I've even been there... twice!  lol

cal... I've watched some of the Bronco game.  Now, only two minutes left and Broncos still ahead... and they have the ball back...  The dog reuniting with its family brought tears to my eyes.  I bet they never thought they'd see each other again.  Be careful blowing your nose for awhile... do it very lightly, or you'll have to start all over again.  I'm not trying to be a know-it-all, I just know nose bleeds, and am trying to help...   ;)  Uh-oh... Pats have the ball back...

Hi to everyone!  Have a nice evening!

Hi cal!  When I went to DC, I was a teenager and wasn't interested in historical stuff, so didn't really remember much about the trip... I was too interested in boys and such.  lol   It would be better to go now, when I would appreciate what I was seeing.  One time I was on my senior trip and the other time I went with my boyfriend and his dad to visit boyfriend's brother in the service there.  Glad the Broncos won, now hoping Carolina wins.  They've had a good year... only lost one game all season.  So far, they're looking real good.

Braveheart checking the weather from her den.

55o, the Good Morning bear is visiting Key West. Im visiting my comfortable bed.

I hope all of you are doing all right.  Those involved do not overdo the snow cleaning to the point of Injuring yourselves.  Good wishes to all.

Honey?s Foot Pads - UPDATE January 24, 2016

Pileated Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
We were glad to see Honey working on her foot pads in the 2?-minute video a Lily Fan captured last night when the infra-red light brightened Honey?s winter quarters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcW-H8RghSk

She was working on her right front paw. I hope we see her work on the other three, too. In the spring, I hope they are all removed and that Honey is walking easily. Incomplete removal might be why Honey and Ted walk gingerly at times.

For newcomers, the story of foot pad removal, including folklore associated with that process, is at Shedding of foot pads by black bears during denning. To see research papers on other topics, go to http://www.bearstudy.org/website/publications/published-papers.html. Click on any highlighted titles that look interesting and see the papers in their entirety.

A big thank you goes to the several people who included the North American Bear Center in their estate planning the last few years. This is hugely needed for long-term sustainability in teaching future generations the true nature of bears. For more information, don?t hesitate to call me at 218-365-4480 or email me at [email protected].

Another need is for Bear Educator Volunteers and Bear Educator Interns for this year. Director of Education Judy Thon is accepting applications for each through February 15. Additional information is at http://www.bear.org/website/volunteer.html , or email [email protected]. Interns and volunteers are needed to take care of the bears and other animals, lead behind-the-scenes tours, do podcasts, answer visitors? questions, etc. Volunteers and interns become very knowledgeable about bears, learning from the exhibits and the bears themselves?both from the ambassador bears and wild bears. The reward for us is having people stop us on the street and tell us how wonderful and knowledgeable the volunteers and interns were at the Bear Center. Interns get a thousand dollars each to help with expenses. Last year, the interns got a list of rental houses from the Chamber of Commerce and shared the cost of one.

The temperature reached 26?F today and might have made the suet softer and easier to eat for the first pileated woodpecker we?ve seen in quite a while.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning, Jewelies! 41 degrees in the forecast, sunny & calm. Love it! Gee whiz, rues! If you leave the snow shovel out, you won't be able to find it!! Ra, you won't be able to go up to help rues, because you don't even have a shovel! Glad you had a good visit with the family. Cal, it's good you have a humidifier on your furnace. Lack of humidity is so hard on your nose.

I've been to D.C. twice a whole lotta years apart. Both times, we sat in the gallery of the senate and the house--saw Ted Kennedy both  times. Was in the White House and dearly loved the Smithonian. The most beautiful thing is the Thomas Jefferson monument. We toured his house, too. Word of advice--if you go, park at one of the outlying metro stations and ride the train in. It goes everywhere. Parking tickets are AWFUL, cost more the closer you are to the white house. In the house of representatives, I wanted to shout."Boys & girls, raise your hand and wait to be called on! We speak one at a time."  They were worthwhile trips. Hi, Jp, Dlong, bischue, neva, deb, Willi and all other Jewelies

It sounds like everyone is doing ok snow/storm-wise!

Hope you're feeling good JP!

Cal, I'd say an outlying metro station would be a spot to catch the train to go into the city.  I know up by the twin cities in MN they have "stations" where people can park to take the metro train into Minneapolis.  Kind of like Park and Ride  :D

Hi Jewelies!  Snow is almost gone, nice and sunny and warm today.  Just wanted to say hi, I didn't sleep very good last night, so going to bed early.  Hope everyone is doing good and has a nice, warm evening!

Cal, the little suburb of Falls Church was the metro station where we would leave our car. There are stations all along the railway line.

Jewel, Micah, Nate and Scott.

It's getting warmer down here.  I am hoping the same is true for all Jewelies.  Good thoughts for all.
