Cal, sending loving hugs to you. Babe could never have had a better mom. Darn it, it's hard to lose a loved one.

Websites Okay, Holly and Lucky Peacefully Switch Places - UPDATE January 9, 2016

Mother Blackheart with Solo as a yearling - 5-17-05
Mother Blackheart with Solo as a yearling - 5-17-05
Bearstudy.org and Bear.org are finally free of the hackers. They weren?t targeting us. They found a way to get into the main server of our host and hack the websites housed on the server, including ours. The webmaster worked through several nights, found how they were getting in, and shut them out. All is well. We don?t store credit card information there, so no harm there.

Yesterday, Lucky got up from his bed in the bunker den and looked out the door. Holly moved to Lucky?s empty bed. Did Lucky tell her to move back to where she is supposed to be? No. He busied himself raking through the straw as if looking for something and then settled down where she had been?a peaceful trade of beds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abA6VYrV7uU

Lily Fans are asking about an article in the news. The DNR has turned on Peggy Callahan of the Wildlife Science Center much as they have turned on us. I don?t know the back story. In the newspaper story about it, Peggy mentions working on DNR wildlife projects from time to time. We are familiar with that. She and her WSC team were the people the DNR sent to capture and remove Solo and her two cubs in a pre-dawn raid on January 14, 2008 after the local community here had become very vocal against the DNR?s decision to kill Solo. As a result of the public outcry to save Solo, Governor Pawlenty announced that Solo would not be killed. Unfortunately, she did die as a result of the action, and her two cubs were placed in captivity. This was after the DNR had egg on its face for falsifying complaints from this community and urging the community to come to consensus to end our research and kill Solo. Instead, the community leaders organized a broad-based committee which met repeatedly throughout the fall. The committee came to consensus in support of our research and refused to follow DNR recommendations to kill Solo. After the governor stepped in and said Solo would not be killed, the DNR ignored this community, the document the Town Council passed unanimously in support of our research and our radio-collared bear Solo and her cubs. They sent Peggy Callahan and her team to carry out the DNR plan as is described at http://www.bearstudy.org/website/updates/yearly-updates.html. The updates there for January 2008 and February 2008 give details and contain links to a video of the operation and a video of Solo?s life. In the video of the operation, you can even hear the tree fall when it was cut down to capture Solo?s terrified cubs. Peggy Callahan showed strong loyalty to the DNR in carrying out this deed for them. Now, the DNR has turned on her as they have turned on us. What is the latest on Solo and her cubs? Solo, or course, died as a result of the operation, as I mentioned earlier. I recently heard that Solo?s cubs Erin and Megan are no longer at the facility where they were taken, so their fate is unknown. Will the DNR also take the animals held at the Wildlife Science Center as they took Solo and her cubs and the animals being well cared for at the Dark Star Rehab Center?

Thank you for all you do.

I'm glad Jim could get the backhoe so you could put Babe to rest, as hard as it is to do that.  Love you!

Upper Wall Photos and Trustworthy Bears - UPDATE January 10, 2016

June and Harry on 6-21-2012
June and Harry on 6-21-2012
Lily Fans suggested 2 pictures as candidates for the upper wall in the Bear Center. One is June and Big Harry peacefully sharing hazelnuts at a community feeding station on June 21, 2012. They have their muzzles tight together with relaxed looks on their faces. These two mated about every mating season, and June 21 is in mating season. Even a month or two after mating season, we have seen pairs who had mated remember each other and be friendly. Hazel nuzzled One-eyed Jack?s neck as she shared food with him at another community feeding station a couple months after they had mated. A Lily Fan wanted this story told, and we agree.

The other picture suggested by a Lily Fan is of One-eyed Jack with an eastern chipmunk that evidently knew him and trusted him enough that he is close to Jack in the feeding trough and is looking away rather than looking out for a swat that could flatten the chipmunk. Lily - 8/6/2014

Chipmunks and black bears share the trait of being able to assess risks and benefits and learn to trust?another story worth telling on the upper wall. A problem bears face with this trait is that fear-based management policies too often lead to wildlife managers killing the most trusting bears, thinking mainly of liability concerns. In actuality, bears that trust people are the least likely to attack.

A related thought relates to the growing bear-viewing industry in Alaska and elsewhere. Viewing and hunting don?t mix. In our experience here, old bears like One-eyed Jack are very trustworthy. Old bears with long experience trusting people at viewing sites in Alaska are among the most trustworthy bears people can see. They go about their lives as magnificent specimens. These are the very bears hunters would want as trophies when they move outside core viewing areas. I believe everything that could be done should be done to protect these valuable, educational bears from being killed by hunters. There are huge areas open for hunting. The areas around the few bear-viewing areas should have large buffer zones.

Two other picture candidates are these portraits of June and Lily.

At the Bear Center, work continues on the new camping exhibit and many other changes that will make the Bear Center seem like a new place by the time we open full time in May. We?re trying to have most of the work done by the time we open for weekends on March 11.

A caller gave his perspective on the bear attack on the scout leader a few weeks ago. He said we have laws that allow us to shoot intruders into our homes but when a bear defends itself in its den, the media says the bear initiated the attack. Any Lily Fan knows what is right on this.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! Brrrrrrr it's freezing outside. Here it is 1pm and the temps are just finally getting out of the teens! Hate, hate, hate cold weather!

Cal, love those pics with Jack and his chipmunk! Doesn't look like something a big ol scary bear would do!  Really nice to have electric in all the rights spots! Glad that Jim was able to make the changes for you. Tela treats me sort of the way Sweets treats Jim! She is very hesitant around me and if I get to close she runs away. She loves Crow. For some reason she just doesn't like me. :(  Did you watch Downton last night? I'm going to hate it when it's all over for good!  Funny dog shame! Poor little hungry Wyatt! :D

Jp, nice pic of Faith! Sure am glad they don't wear those collars any more! Hope you are having a wonderful day!

Hi Rues! I did watch downton last night even watch the one before cause i had fallen asleep. can't believe this is it for that series..it is so good. was going to watch sherlock homes but i did fall asleep woke up at 11 and it was over woke up alot during the night. jim got my heat lamp in didn't have one so went to walmart and got one..he still has alot to do right now only little sweets overhead heat lamp on that switch. he is going to switch the other two to that switch. and put more regular lights in. it really helps keep sweets warm. perfect right over the boys bed. so everyone has a warm place to be. got nice today it is 37 right now. but cold front moving back in and snow for friday but today is not so bad. i am with you sick of winter ready for spring and scout to come back and mow the yard and all that. hate winter too rues. i thought the dog shame was funny too. tough luck wyatt..crybaby.. :D mr crow must really be okay cause molly loves him and tela too. they must not care about the seven words..maybe they use them too! maybe mr crow taught them those words..i am happy those bears don't wear them collars anymore too.

Hi Nora! wow i know your temp is cold just had them here for a couple of days. left today maybe my nicer temp heading up towards you. i hope so.
