Hi Jewelies!  :)

I have a few minutes before my son gets here to work on the computer again. I get so anxious when my digital things are not working properly!  :o

I loved the update today! I always like it when there are no sad stories, but great pictures of the area around Ely and the wildlife.

Our little friend Bei Bei is sleeping in a big bowl! I don't know whether he got in there by himself or Mei put him there before she went outdoors. But, here he is!

I hear my son pulling up. The rest of them will be coming over later to have chili. I'm fixing some cornbread too, with cheese, green chili peppers, and corn in it. Have a great day everyone!

Hi Jewelies!  Chilly day today, but sunny.  Supposed to rain the rest of the week and warm up.

cal... I hope BB cat is ok.  17 is pushing it.   Oldest cat I've ever had was 19.

dlong... Bei Bei is cute in his napping bowl!  lol  He was mentioned the other night on the Late Show... Jimmy Fallon was comparing Carson, the Presidential candidate, to a baby panda, I think.  lol   Glad you're getting to spend a lot of time with your kids!

Nora... Nice throw!!  How's Joe?

JP... You feeling better?

Hi to all and have a nice evening!

Hi, Jewelies!  We are starting another warm-up here. Just think--tomorrow is the shortest day of the year, and then we get to have a little more daylight added each day. I can't imagine living in a place that has 6 mo. of darkness. No way!! Lots of birds are coming to the 2 feeders, which provide entertainment for Julie. She likes to sit in the window and watch, no doubt feeling a lot of frustration that she can't get out there. Neva, good to see you! Jp, best wishes for feeling better by tomorrow?Nora, hope Joe is continuing to get better fast. Cal, hugs to you for taking such care of your furry family. Hope you are getting some rest!!!! Ra, think for lunch tomorrow, I'll have a taco with a corn tortilla  filled with rice, black beans & salsa. Might have that, along with other things, for Christmas lunch since my daughter is a vegetarian. Rues, the snow shovel isn't out, but we do have the snowblower mounted to the front of the lawnmower---just in case-----??.. Willi, hope moving is going smoothly (does it ever?) and you feel at home in your new house. Dlong, from the lib., I just got Stephen King's latest but haven't started it yet. Bischue, is it pretty cold up there? I'd sure like to know how D2 is getting along. Wasn't she spending her winters in Iowa in the past?

Ted

We saw a great bunch of picture in the update, yesterday including the drone pictures.  What a lovely area and I never heard of the WRI cabin.  Does anyone know what it is used for?  It seems to be a pretty good size.  And dlong's picture of Bei Bei in the bowl was a goodie.

Quiet posting day probably means everyone was busy getting ready for the holidays.  It does not seem possible that the year is so close to its end.

For everyone, good thoughts and hopes for a great day.

Holly, Lucky, Animal Minds - UPDATE December 20, 2015

Dr. Rogers and DuffyHolly has left the camera unsmeared, and Lily Fans are grabbing good shots of her interactions with Lucky. This one is a good picture series
https://youtu.be/D_RZ54Yq8gs,
and these three are videos
Holly and Lucky Wrestling and Cuddling 12/20/2015,
Holly and Lucky 12/20/2015,
Holly and Lucky's Afternoon Wrestling Match 12/20/2015.
They are enjoying the winter together.

A Lily Fan also sent this terrific article that mentions Dr. Donald Griffin and many of the recent breakthroughs that resulted from his beginnings in the field. http://www.economist.com/news/essays/21676961-inner-lives-animals-are-hard-study-there-evidence-they-may-be-lot-richer-science-once-thought?platform=hootsuite

Today, we submitted the following abstract after being invited to make this presentation at the International Bear Conference coming up June 12-16 in Anchorage, Alaska. When I give Sue an outline of the talk, Sue said she will pull together videos using the catalog she created these past months. The abstract is one word short of the 350-word limit.

Abstract: Understanding black bear vocalizations and body language for research, management, and coexistence. Lynn L. Rogers and Susan A. Mansfield, Wildlife Research Institute, 1482 Trygg Road, Ely, MN 55731

Using audio/video examples, we discuss the meanings of black bear vocalizations and body language: (a) Amiable grunts and tongue-clicks, (b) Ritualized displays of anxiety characterized by bears harmlessly exhaling sharply along with aggressive-looking body language (long nose, ears back, lunge and ground-slap, false charge, blow and clack), and (c) Vocalizations that express a range of emotions. Understanding black bear language enabled us to allay bears? fears, build trust, and conduct close-up observational studies like Jane Goodall pioneered with chimpanzees. No bear viewed us as significant food-givers or competitors, much less as enemies or friends. Instead, they learned to ignore researchers logging data 2-8 meters away for 24 to 48-hour periods. Using these methods, we conducted a U. S. Forest Service habitat-use study in 1984-1991 and did a comparative study in 1996-2015 around a community that had fed black bears since 1961. Bears we attempted to work with in the latter area fell in four categories: (a) Bears that remained too unapproachable to observe; (b) Bears that accepted touch, hand-feeding, and radio-collaring at community feeding locations but remained unapproachable elsewhere; (c) Bears that, even away from the feeding locations, learned our routines and could be approached briefly for adjustments to radio-collars, replacement of GPS batteries, etc.; and (d) Bears that recognized our routines, ignored us, revealed their lives, and in some cases allowed us to place webcams in their dens. Popular predictions about deleterious consequences of habituation and food-conditioning did not materialize in our study areas. In the first study, bear problems were 88% fewer than before the study. Confirming the safety of that study, government officials protected the study area by closing it to hunting. In the second study, there had been no attacks during the decades of community feeding, and bear complaints in the study area ran 80% below the statewide average on a per-bear basis. In all our black bear studies, no bear ever came after us and hurt us. Trust-based observational studies, combined with telemetry and GPS data, revealed more about black bear life and habitat needs than we could have learned in any other way.

The picture is from the early days of experimenting to see if black bears that tolerated company are trustworthy. I never had a problem.

Thank you for all you do.

Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

Cal, I'm so sorry for your loss of BB. I'm glad you were with him when he passed. Does BB stand for something?  Wow, Buster lived a long life! My Heidi lived 17 years. I still miss her.  We had a nice time Sat at the ballet. The restored theater was beautiful and this ballet school had the best dancers, costumes and sets. We will definitely go there again next year! Unfortunately I started getting a bad headache a half hour before the ballet ended. That dang thing hung around until this morning! I don't know what that was all about. We went to dinner last night with my sister and Sandy. I hoped that would make me feel better but it didn't. Sorry to go on and on about me. My sis thinks I should see a chiropractor. Maybe I will. Hey, I see you are now again the starter of Jewel's! Yay!

Jp, Ted is one big bear! I hope you don't get underwear or socks for Christmas! My grandma always got all us granddaughters a package of underpants for Christmas. I don't know what she got the grandsons!  :D

Ra, after that snow squall and then the black ice on Friday we are starting to warm up! They say we will be 25 degrees above normal all week long but with rain everyday! 65 Christmas Day! Yippee!

Obsver, maybe we won't need our snow shovels this winter!

Neva, good to see you again. Where'd all your posts go?

Nora, hope Joe is doing well!

Dlong, glad you are having a nice visit with your kids! Cutest pic of BeiBei in the bowl! Hope you get all your computer probs fixed!

Hi JP! I did that in bold to get your attention..i just heard back from Dr. Rogers people and here is what they said about that cabin you asked about..

The cabin is the Wildlife Research Institute. Dr. Rogers' office, a large reference library, and accommodations for the Bear Study course participants are all in that 3 story house.

Hi Jewelies!  Yay!  No more Re: and cal is our leader again!  Cloudy day here, rain is moving in soon.  Then rain through the rest of the week.  I have to make another batch of oatmeal cookies this afternoon... always give my son-in-law a tin of them.  I made up 9 small boxes of cookies yesterday for gifts to his family and the grands boyfriends.  Yesterday, I also tried out my new sewing machine a little.  I made my daughter a couple of hang towels for her kitchen.  They're made with a towel and a pot holder.  The pot holder has to have a loop... that's what you loop around a big button.

cal... I'm so sorry you lost your BB.  I was wondering when I didn't see you after your morning post.  That's the worst part of having pets.  I'm tired of going through losing them, so I'm hoping that these two will be my last ones.  Of course, if a poor pitiful kitty shows up...  Wow... Buster was 25!!  I wonder what the record is...  I hope you get to go to CA's with Babe!   Sounds like a good plan, especially since it won't be too hot or too cold for her.  I wonder when that pic of Dr. Rogers and Duffy was taken...  Have you ever noticed that I wonder a lot?  Thanks for emailing and asking what the cabin is for!  So... do you think that's where he gets the good pics of all the birds?  Sure takes some nice pics of them!

rues... I'm so glad you had a nice time at the Nutcracker!  At least your headache let you enjoy the ballet.  You don't have to worry about "going on and on" about yourself!  That's what we're here for, isn't it?   ;)

Yeah, JP... Christmas isn't here yet... there's still time to get some underwear!  lol

obsver... I can't imagine living somewhere that has 6 months of daylight OR 6 months of darkness!!  Yes, D1 spent most of her winters in Iowa.  Just think though... she will be 5 in the spring and may be setting up house this winter!!  Sure do wish we knew where she is.  I bet we wouldn't know her now!  Probably almost all white headed or maybe even completely white headed.

Going to make some cookies!  BBL
