Hi Jewelies!  Just got back a little while ago from the concert... sure had a packed house!  Our family had a whole row of seats!  lol  It was nice again here today... I'm getting spoiled with this nice weather!  I have a snake living in the bank of the ditch out by the road!  The past two days I've found it curled up in the sun.  At first I thought it was dead, but nope.  When it sees me, it disappears in a hole in the grass.  Now, I'm going to be REALLY leery of holes in the grass!!  Yikes.  I think it's a king snake... a good snake that eats poisonous snakes.  At least, I hope that's what it is...   :o

rues... How far from your house is Robin's?  Don't remember ever hearing, and am curious.  My outside decorations are different this year.  Instead of putting up lights, I put silver garland on a couple of trees.  I figure they will look nice in the sun and maybe the car lights will make them shine.  One of the trees is a bare crape myrtle and I wrapped the branches with the garland.  Looks pretty cool.  So, your vet thinks Wilson is aggressive??  Does she have to throw a net on him?  lol  I can't imagine attorneys having a continuing education class at a state park!! No conference rooms in town?  lol  I'm glad she's staying overnight, too! My daughter is sending Gramma a card, too!  You don't like low rise jeans??  How about skinny jeans?  They're my favorite!   :D  Yes!  You need a heated mattress pad!  They're fantastic!

JP... So glad to hear your computer is on its way!  Finally!  I'm glad you had some sunshine today, too! I think it's pretty crummy that you have to wait until Friday for a guy to come back about your TV.  It's not like it was your mistake...  Crazy weather going around the country this year.  Last month we had almost 3 times more rain than a normal November...

dlong... I guess I'm a crazy cat person, too!  lol  I'm always talking to mine... always.  lol  Love the pic from San Diego.  Cute kitty... looks like baby Handsome!

obsver... How many sweaters did you get?   Sounds like you got some really great deals!  I'm using my mattress pad every night!  My daughter said she sleeps better now that she has one, too!  I usually end up turning mine off in the middle of the night, I get too hot, even if it's down low!

cal... I'm glad you and Babe got a good nights' sleep last night.  I bet those lights at Corey's house did make  you sad.  Good that Polly will be there so you can go to the service.  Looks like the dogs in d's pic are saving a place at the foot of the bed... just like your dogs do!  lol  Glad the calendars are ready now... I've already told my daughter they're ready!   :)

Well, Jewelies... I'm ready to put my jammies on and put my feet up.  Hope everyone has a nice evening!  Hi to everyone!

Good Morning! 8)

The third time is the charm. My pad gave me a "sorry, browser has stopped" notice and quit the internet twice ss I was entering this post.  For that reason I will just greet and retreat.

Very little sun yesterday, maybe today.  The turkey vultures have just been perching 'cause it is lousy soaring weather.

Hopes out to all for a really fine Wednesday.

Ted Has a Visitor - UPDATE December 8, 2015

Kermode Black Bear with salmon
Kermode black bear with salmon
A visitor to Ted today was an ermine (Mustela erminia), also called a short-tailed weasel. It was bouncing around with its white coat and black-tipped tail highly visible against the dark ground in this nearly snowless winter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McPEecXAGn0. People tend to call them ermines in their winter white and short-tailed weasels in their summer brown coats.

We are excited about the facelift that is happening to the Bear Center this winter, both inside and outside (the entryway). We will also be adding information, especially in the Ecology Hall and on the upper walls of the Bear Center itself.

Near the aquarium, we?ll have a poster about how salmon are an important part of black bear and brown bear diets at spawning streams along the Pacific Coast and to a lesser extent along the shore of Lake Superior, but most inland bears never eat a fish. For the poster, a Lily Fan provided the picture here that shows an example of a black bear catching a salmon on Gribbell Island in British Columbia. This particular bear is a black version of the Kermode Black Bear, also called the Spirit Bear?especially when they have white coats.

Much is happening, thanks in part to Lily Fans. Along that line, I thank Lily Fans for the bear food donations that I believe saved Lily this past hunting season when hunters surrounded our property while Lily was occupied miles away thanks to Lily Fans. We?ll see what comes of our Den Cam Permit Application. More on that coming up.

Here at home, it?s date night. Donna and I are going to a wolf lecture given by Dr. David Mech?s assistant Shannon Barber-Meyers at the Wolf Center. She was nice to come to my lecture in Winnipeg. Tonight, we want to hear what she has to say about our local wolves.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies!  Another nice day... saw my snake again... he's been there every day since the day I found him.  When my daughter got here today with the girls, I showed it to them and they said, "yup, it's a king snake.  Isn't he cute??""  Ummmm... it's a snake, no, not cute!!  Ewww!!  Now that I know it's a good snake, I'll say hi to him and leave him alone.  Just got home from Mexican night... seemed like it had been months since we were there, but only one month.  lol

cal... Corey only 53, wow.  He's was too young to lose so soon.  Hope you got to go to the service.  Poor Babe... and, poor you.  Handsome decided today that he doesn't want to be petted anymore and bit and grabbed my hand.  I was afraid he wasn't going to let me go, but he just scratched me a little... no stitches this time!   :o

dlong... I LOVE your new avatar!!  I bet you're busy, aren't you?   :)

JP... Are you able to track your new computer yet?

Quiet day today.  Busy time of year for us Jewelies!!  I got my cards done today!  Yay!  Hi to everyone!

Animal Feelings - UPDATE December 9, 2015

Bill - August 29, 2012
Bill - August 29, 2012
A Lily Fan was asking about bear feelings and bear reactions to the deaths of bears they know. It?s a topic of growing interest as people share observations on the social media. Dr. Marc Bekoff of the University of Colorado wrote about magpies and crows showing high interest in their fallen companions.`

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1221754/Magpies-grieve-dead-turn-funerals.html#ixzz1zE7QhnpI

One video showed magpies standing near a dead member of their flock and vocalizing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60Zg9sGnQf8 I wish we knew what they were saying.

A grad student at University of Washington is working with her professor to understand the gatherings of crows around dead crows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK5f2V3G9fM.

Bill - August 29, 2012
Bill - August 29, 2012
We remember May 24, 2012 when 2-year-old Bill discovered the body of his 4-year-old half (or full) sister Jo who had been dead for about 3 days. Bill approached her body, sniffed it, and erupted in a flurry of friendly vocalizations like captive Ted makes toward people before he licks their faces. Bill tried to lift her head. He sniffed her all over, making the friendly, high-pitched sound. He tried to drag her, all the while making the friendly sound. Finally, he left her and walked away, looking back at her repeatedly before he disappeared. Two other males saw Jo?s body but paid no attention. It was obvious that Bill knew his sister and felt friendly toward her. I imagine they met and played together in their mother?s territory. His reactions were friendly, not so much grieving. He didn?t seem to understand why she was unresponsive. Maybe I?m not giving Bill enough credit. The photos of Bill were taken just 5 days after that incident.

We remember 5-year-old Juliet?s intense grunts of concern for her ailing cub Mimi in the summer of 2008 when Mimi died a few hours later as seen in the BBC documentary Bearwalker of the Northwoods.

We remember the joyous reunion of Hope and Lily on May 26, 2010 as seen in the BBC documentary My Bear Family and Me (with Gordon Buchanan). It was obvious that the reunion meant a lot to both of them, especially Hope, which makes us suspect what Hope had been feeling without her mother during the previous 5 days.

As Dr. Bekoff wrote, the only way to come to a more complete understanding of what birds and other animals can do and what they feel is to study free-ranging animals that can form natural social groups and are free to roam. The bears have shown us so much, but there is still much we have never seen.

It was fun being part of the podcast today at 1 PM.

Thank you for all you do.

A long day, but Joe did fine with his bypass surgery.  The got the ventilator out when they knew he was breathing on his own fine.  He was a hurting pup when I left to come home and they were going to go the morphine route.  More later.

Whose grand does the cheerleading, RA??  Way go go girl and team!!!

Amy just posted on Facebook she saw a frog in the road on her way home today.  A FROG in DECEMBER!!!!!  Something is wrong with this picture.  No snow here and the grass is all green.

As to Corey's physical not showing anything, unless he was having an MI or had had one, and EKG won't show anything.  That's why Joe's didn't show and he had a 100% blockage besides the other two, one 80% and one 90%.  So sad that had to happen so close to Christmas.

I'm totally zapped, more tomorrow.

OH!  Congrats on the new sweaters and stuff Obsver!  (I think it was you)  :-[

Hi Nora!  Thanks for letting us know about Joe's surgery.  I hope you get some rest while he's still in the hospital... he's going to need you when he comes home.   Yes, my grand is a cheerleader, but cal's friend's daughter is the one who won the nationals.  Wow... a frog in MN in the winter!  Must be a record...

I just got home from the high school concert .  Such a big improvement from the Middle School chorus to the high school... they sounded awesome tonight!  As tiny as my grand is, she is one of the loudest singers! Every once in awhile, we could hear her voice through all the others!  lol  My ex was there with one of his old girlfriends.  Hope he keeps this one around... she's very nice and a nurse, so he'd have someone to take care of him.

Sleep well, Jewelies!  See you tomorrow!
