Jewel made one of her rare appearances at the WRI. She was on alert while her cubs ate peacefully or relaxed under her protection. She got on the scale (235 pounds) and let us feel for a scar. Jewel's cub

Nervous as she was, we might have missed the exact place, but we didn?t feel any scar and her short new fur did not show a hint of one. The open wound of last fall has healed well despite being so open that we could see organs inside.

It was a day of bears (Lily, Faith, Samantha, cubs, etc.) and nature.
The day included a moment of relief when I got a call that Braveheart was seen. The feeder knew I was worried because she had not been seen since July 21.
The day began cool (53?F), so we got two lectures out of the way?a 15-minute PowerPoint on what the Den Cams showed us and a 45-minute slide show on local bear biology. Then it was out for adventure and learning. A nice thing is that there are no bugs. No ticks, mosquitoes, deer flies, horse flies, black flies, or no-see-ums. Seems impossible.

A call today from the Washington Post for comments about a bear issue in another state should run soon. The reporter will send a link when it runs.
Another great group.
Thank you for all you do.
